From MI, I moved to Austin, TX and it is terrifying if there is any snow at all. Most here have no idea how to drive on it, so it is best to stay at home until it melts.

Based on a law passed in 2012, the FCC has stripped local government of powers to hold up deployment of temporary cell towers, COWs, etc. It also limits their ability to prevent modifications to EXISTING cell towers
Too bad that law didn't also take away local governments power to stop NEW cell tower placements altogether.
Providing more certainty to industry and municipalities, and more flexibility to carriers to meet extraordinary, short-term service needs will accelerate private and public investment to strengthen our nations communications networks, said FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski in a statement.
On Friday, the commission defined and clarified a technical provision in the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2012 regarding local review of requests to modify an existing wireless tower or base station. The provision will accelerate deployment and delivery of high-speed mobile broadband to communities across the nation, the commission said.
FCC today also launched a proceeding to expedite placement of temporary cell towers cells on wheels (COWs) and cells on light trucks (COLTs) that are used to expand capacity during special events. -- A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. | This could be a good thing, but it also comes with potential drawbacks. For instance, I'd be rather perturbed if a service provider decided to drop a temporary cell tower in the neighborhood - even if it was just for a couple weeks to support a large event. These things aren't the most attractive looking pieces of equipment and do take up space. But avoiding things like this is one of the reasons I moved about as far beyond the suburbs as possible. Still, however, I'd like to have the Town have the power to prevent a deployment of temporary sites if enough of its residents objected.

About two weeks ago I started the unlock process with AT&T. I navigated to their on-line web site and completed the request form. Within a day or two I received an e-mail asking me to wait another 24 hours before following the unlock procedure.
OK -- thank you AT&T! I didn't even have to talk to anyone. Yeah! Now...on to that unlock procedure...
Connect your phone to iTunes and restore it. Say what? Of course I can use iTunes to do a full backup, restore the iPhone and then recover with the backup. Which I did and my phone is now unlocked but who the heck thought of this as an unlock procedure? What a PITA!
IMO -- this is a completely ridiculous process. Does anyone know WHY I had to go through this ridiculous, lengthy process just to enable the phone to work with another network's SIM card? Is this unique to the iPhone?
In closing, although I like my iPhone and to a far lesser extent, Apple, iTunes leaves a lot to be desired. Despite telling me I was doing a full backup, it lost all of my music. No harm done, all of my music is ripped from CDs I own so I can quickly restore it but Apple -- you don't know what the definition of FULL BACKUP means. What a load of bull.

| Has anyone noticed that Google SafeSearch is now mandatory? Starting a couple months ago, Google took away the ability to turn off SafeSearch for its .com domains, although the sites in other countries still had that ability. I started a thread on Google Groups and all Google would say was that they weren't censoring anything, people just had to be more specific in their queries. That was demonstrated to be false.
Now Google has made this change to all their sites world-wide.
Instead of the old three options of "Off", "Moderate" and "Strict", you now have "Show most relevant results" and "Filter explicit results". The latter is equivalent to strict filtering and the former is the equivalent of moderate filtering.
There is now no way to get unfiltered search results using Google!
Some people will say that it doesn't matter because there are other ways to find porn. That ignores the bigger picture. How do you know what's being filtered? Can you guarantee that only porn is being filtered? No, you can't. How do you trust filtered search results if you can't turn the filters off for comparison?

The last speed test I ran gave me 13Mbps/10Mbps compared to my 6Mbps/512Kbps DSL. Since I'm on an unlimited Verizon plan I'm going to keep testing this as long as I can! This is great - I've got my laptop connected to it (I can even VPN and remote desktop to work with no problem at this speed) and I can take my Wifi Kindle Fire anywhere I want and use it too! At my current rate I'll probably double my usage to 4gb over last month's - Wondering if Verizon will have any issue with this...but as I understand it they can't prohibit you from using your phone this way...Any one have a similar experience or comments on this to share?

| | CBS should re release The Amos & Andy TV show from the 1950s One of my favorite television shows of all time is Amos & Andy. I remember watching it when I was eight years old on WPIX channel 11 in New York. A year or so later, I started to see the show on WCBS channel 2 during the week, when I didn't have school or was on vacation. Then without warning, the show was taken off the air, it seemed never to be heard from again. This was the first all black comedy show to be seen on television. It had high ratings when shown for the first time from June 1951 to June 1953. They made 78 episodes. What happened, CBS started to get pressure from the N.A.A.C.P. during production to take them off the air because they said they were stereotyping black people and making them look in a bad way. They were no different than the Marx Brothers, Abbott & Costello or the Three Stooges except they were black. In 1966 CBS withdrew the Amos & Andy from syndication from the entire country. The show centers around the antics of George "Kingfish" Stevens, head of the Mystic knights of the Sea Large Hall played by Tim Moore. His wife Sapphire played by Ernestine Wade. Andy Brown played by Spencer Williams. Algonquin J Calhoun the Lawyer played by Johnny Lee. Amos Jones the cab driver played by Alvin Childress and Lightnin' the Janitor to name a few. In many of the episodes Kingfish is trying cheat Andy out of something usually money. In other episodes the Kingfish is trying to hide a bad deal he made from his wife. You can now see all but six episodes of Amos & Andy on the internet. Today Amos & Andy is harmless fun, compared to what's out there and should again be seen on TV. | |

1 edit | Just plain effin tired of it all... I say nationalize all carriers. It's the people's money that keeps the infrastructure growing and running. The corporations just horde all the money that's collected to pay off lobbyists or other government agencies to dictate stupid policies.
Eliminate data caps and ridiculously overpriced internet connections. Instead of cheering how much worthless paper you collected in a quarter, how about celebrating and rewarding people on how many peoples lives you improved.
The monetary system we have today is worthless paper, backed by nothing. I'm tired of hearing all the whining about why we can't do this or why we can't do that because it's not cost effective. BS!!! The same BS was used 100 years ago to destroy Nikola Tesla and his creative spirit. He had a way to deliver electricity free to the people, and the bankers said, absolutely not.
Call this a rant.. I really don't care, but I'm effin tired of this BS economic system that is controlled by bankers and corporations. Communism doesn't work, and neither does Vulture Capitalism.
There's millions out of work and losing their homes and it's NOT their fault. Unemployment is realistically at around 40% and not the myth of 7.8%. Once you run out of benefits, you are no longer counted as unemployed.. That's a documented fact.
Perhaps we need a extinction level event to spur radical change. It's disturbing to be living in a era of time when we have all kind of technology advancements, but most are shelved or bought up and dismantled because there's no money to be made from them. It doesn't mater if it would revolutionize the world. It's all about the almighty effin buck.. Which is effin paper!!!!
Imagine that.. the lack of us advancing to greater and better times is the lack of effin worthless paper, backed by nothing.

As bad as the carriers are, the government is worse and woefully incompetent. There is no more corrupt or greedy organization in the nation than the Federal Government. European style quasi-socialism doesn't work and leads to persistent debt and unemployment. Even in Germany, unemployment is increasing, 8th month in a row and currently 6.8%. Now keep in mind that high number is still near their 20 year low. You want 8-10% U3 unemployment (15-20% U6) to be the new normal? How about $9/gal gas...what do you think that would do to our fragile economy? Naw, I don't think you want that.
Perhaps if American's still had a work ethic you could make it work but given Gen Y is a bunch of lazy narcissists and politicians dumb as shit, it is doomed to failure; we would end up like Greece (not that we aren't already heading that way thanks to a new plurality of low information "Obama-phone" voters with an unprecedented sense of entitlement).

| elray join:2000-12-16 Santa Monica, CA | Wow.
What do you think would happen if you nationalize the carriers? Shortages and rationing. Poor service. Black markets and blacklists. Systemic failure.
Caps will only exist as long as necessary to stem abuse. Carriers will always resort to "unlimited" tiers when they can, since the public will pay more for the assurance they bring. (Just try to illustrate the annual savings achieved on measured _anything_ to a typical consumer, you won't last two minutes).
Broadband is cheaper than ever, the result of greedy corporations, not your congressman. Do you really want to turn your internet connection over to the folks that run the Post Office, the TSA, Fannie Mae, the FCC and the FDA?
The millions who are "losing their homes" are at fault, they paid too much and borrowed where they weren't qualified. Why are my tax dollars being used to bail them out?
Perhaps what we need is for individuals to grow up and take responsibility for their own lives, rather than believing they're entitled to have someone else subsidize them.
If you really think your usage cap or internet rate is a problem, do what the rest of us do - earn more money (work two jobs, get a raise, invest in yourself, audit your balance sheet), use less data, or move to greener pastures.
|

As for getting another job or asking for a raise or moving to greener pastures. You sir are obviously out of touch with reality and probably work in a job sector that pays it's people far too much to sit on their asses doing nothing.. Our taxes were and are being used to bail out errant homebuyers, directly and indirectly, by the hundreds of billions.
I won't go into 100 pages of detail, but just for instance - consider the effects of a short sale. The bank is paid with our tax money to take a loss, relieving the homebuyer of his obligation, and the home "owner" gets debt relief, which is normally considered TAXABLE INCOME, but the government now waives the tax. Given that we're not running a surplus, that means another taxpayer is making up the difference, or we're borrowing it from our kids.
Public utilities are a mixed lot. At best, if they provide a competively priced product while paying public union wages, they're shorting maintenance and long-term investment while using public subsidy. At their worst, they're just another tax mechanism, as they are in Los Angeles. At least with [rofit-driven publicly-traded utilities, they have incentive to be efficient, and a fidiciary responsibility to their shareholders; you can choose to buy the stock and share in the dividends, rather than just being forced to pay homage to the government.
As for getting another job - trust me, I know how hard it is. We closed our payroll several years ago, as have ALL of my peers, thanks to California state regulation, workers compensation, and tax policy.
Thats where greener pastures come in. Half of the aforementioned group migrated to Texas, Florida, offshored or moved overseas to more business-friendly climes. Sometimes you have to physically move. THAT is "reality". We've done it several times before, and most likely, we'll be forced to again.

At least these approach the actual link speed. Others are so slow they barely get to 1/10 of the link speed. Unfortunately HTML5 is so tied up with how each browser implements it, results vary greatly from one browser brand to another.

In short do these microwave relays are the networks built accounting for blockage? What is to stop a town miles away from authorizing say a hotel tower for their own economic good and if that tower blocks the beam can this trading network sue to stop it?
I find it scary that even 1ms is considered vital. I mean even gamers find below a certain ms ping acceptable. 14ms to Chicago would be dreamland for gaming. And these guys just waste it to shave hundredths of a penny in profits.
