Imagine

Imagine if Yahoo went the the root of Google and started bringing fiber to the masses. Competition would be working all across the US. Alas Yahoo is going to go the route of AOL.

Awesome looking car. That thing could turn on a dime!! I leased one for 4 years from '96 to '00. It had the original 190 HP VQ 3.5L V6 engine! It was a beast for it's time. Good luck if you are getting one.

Well..

Me and my brother "were" going to open up a computer and take a quick look inside after hearing it hum loudly. Come to find out, taking the back cover piece off wasn't as easy as taking a regular tower apart. It's got those snap on things all the way around it, we tried the tools he had but they didn't do nothing so we tried using a spatchula and after 20 minutes of prying on them, the cover is free.

Once inside, we quickly noticed all the dust that's covering the main computer part thats held in by 4 screws. I removed the dust with my metro VAC and toke the cover off and the CPU fan was caked in with dust from all directions. The owners of this pc are heavy smokers too, yellow all in the inside and making the dust turn into hard chunks. We found out where the vibration was coming from, if you apply pressure onto the motherboard, the noise goes away. We try fixing it by using bread ties and electric tape to hold pressure but it was a fail.

I think the fan is failing but we're not gonna replace it nor will we dig out all the caked in dust thats in between the CPU heat sink walls, whats the point? Only go back to it the way it was.

The computer is one of those Acer Aspire home theaters. Here are some specs, AMD athlon, 4GB DDR3, 1TB HDD. The model #:Z3101-U4062

We're running memtest on it for the night. Not sure what the problem the owner was having but I would figure that it did something with a heating issue. It loads up windows 7 just fine.

Re: Well..

Ewwwwwwww

Sounds like you need to take one of those cans of compressed air, tie it to a fuse, light a match, then yell CLEAR! and chuck it in the computer case and run

(note: I was being facetious, please don't try this in real life, seriously, it's a bad idea, don't do it!)

Re: Well..

After my brother went to work, I layed the computer down and put my metro VAC on blow and blew out whatever was loose. Not much blew out but i'd hate for it to burn up once the owner gets it back.

It's got AMD in it and great ram (4GB) and a awesome OS bit with a 1TB HDD. Maybe its just the fact that i don't wanna get bad reviews?

Are you Guys Tech's? I don't know why the owner would entrust you with his computer. Anyway, when ever working on a computer you have to know something about it. Google is a good way to find some information, it looks like you have one of those All-in-One Computer. They are notorious for heat problems, the PC Companies tried to copy Apple and came up with these sleek looking computers. They don't last long and break down faster than a Desktop. The Motherboard is held down by screws, if something else is rattling around it should be replaced. Clean it out, try to find the loose part tighten it or replace it and put it back together. Then give it a good test run, if it heats up on you try to find the source probably the HDD or Processor. Good Luck!

Yes, I use bing pretty much everytime for the info that it could have but i also recommend using youtube. I only posted it to here, well, look at the title of this thread "weekend open" witch means it open to anything and to whoever wants to say whats occurring (its up to the poster if they want it to be posted or not).

He is a tech, not so much me but I do however have my own high spec gaming rig, upgrade it time to time. He looks for people in our area that are having computer problems or questions on how does this or that work(tutorial's kind of). He's been studying some C++ but since business has been busy lately, he doesn't get to. He also does soldering work where he removes chips from circuit boards and can put it back or upgrade it(if possible)

When he needs a pc cleaned out, he calls me and i get my metro VAC out and start sucking or blowing away.

I'm not saying i know everything on computers because i haven't worked in any huge business involving IT work nor have I seen it all, this area i live in isn't about computers as much as many other places are, its a very deep part of in the country and wild. I know a few things about computers like is this piece of hardware compatible with this piece of hardware or witch program is perfect for what i need.

What me and my brother do can please alot of nearby people that need help/assistance in our area but what we do, I am sure millions of other IT works outside of our area do everyday atleast 50(just a random number) times a day. What we do is good enough for those that need whatever it is they want, don't have to be a 100% professional and go to college for say 4 years to learn the things we do.. It isn't rocket science.

I just recently cleaned out a friend's computer. She occasionally takes the side panel off and vacuums out the dust, but that's as far as she goes. I pulled the plastic front off and there was black crud caking the front grill. I propped the front over a garbage can and started scraping it off. By the time I was done, my hands were black and it looked like someone had dumped a potted plant in the trash.

Of course that wasn't the only bad spot. The case fans were growing fur as was the inside of the green plastic shroud used to direct the air onto the CPU heatsink (yup, it's a Dell). Also, the side of the hard drive mounting cage was all fuzzy. That's the only part I thought to snap a photo of;

Of course, cleaning the dirt out of it is only half the battle. The amount of crap on this system is about equivalent to the physical dirt I pulled out of it. It takes forever to boot and even after the desktop appears, it takes another 3-5 minutes to full drawn all the icons. Even then, the hard drive keeps running for another 20-30 minutes and trying to do anything during this time period is an exercise in frustration. Then, even after it stops (which is rare), it still takes 3-5 minutes to run a program, like Firefox.

I've given up trying to "fix" it and will probably just either use Dell's restore function, or re-install Windows from scratch.

I would more than likely do the same very thing. Leave out about half the programs you normally have installed. Some people install as many as 100+ programs on such a low spec computer and this is where speed issues come into play.

You could run a smart HDD test from seatgate and see what comes up. Doing a BIOS flash may do the trick too. If you wanna check the GPU to make sure everythings good there, run this »na.finalfantasyxiv.com/b ··· ownload/ and to check the temps on everything or atleast what your computer will allow, check out a program called AIDA64.

You guys have some dirty computers, but I'd like some more Specs on that Dell. How old is the computer, amount of Memory, and which Windows. 4Gb of Memory is barely average, 6 or more should be okay. Before reloading the OS think about changing out the HDD if the computer is older than 3 years, especially if the HDD is not a Seagate or WD.

4GB is just about right for my ASUS, xblade, 2TB HDD, 600PSU, EVGA Nvidia 550Ti GPU. I monitor it quite alot and atleast 95% of my 100 steam bought games run fine with it.

I'm not sure exactly how old the computer is because there's no date on it. It's at least 6-7 years old or so. It's a 3.04Ghz Intel P4, 512MB of RAM (I know), 200GB IDE hard drive with Windows XP Pro, SP3. It has some nice features though, like 4 SATA connectors and a PCIE x16 slot.

That's the way it came from the factory when my friend's boyfriend's mother bought it and it hasn't been upgraded, other than to add a DVD-RW drive. It will only support a maximum of 2GB of RAM. I went through all the spare memory modules that I've pulled from older systems, but I couldn't find any that were compatible with it. I found two of the right size, 1GB each, but when I put them, the system won't boot. I also don't have any hard drives that are better than what's in there.

I've tried to convince her to invest in more memory (about $40 on Amazon), but the computer isn't really a priority for her. She was using a beat-up Toshiba laptop until it finally died. That was only 1.8Ghz with 512MB.

The thing is that this system is way beyond the slowness you'd expect of a system with 512MB. The hard drive always seems to be doing something. The activity light is on almost constantly. If I boot into Safe Mode, it goes out after a couple minutes and just occasionally blinks. Of course Safe Mode is missing so much stuff that you can't do a whole lot with it.

My biggest stumbling block is finding a way to backup the iTunes MobileSync files. She says I can delete them, but I'd feel better if I could back them up. Unfortunately, they have names like 765fmdjh34tydmgyu4g47d and don't even have extensions. I can figure out what most of them are by looking for the header in the raw file, but there are about 6,000 files. iTunes has no way to export the files and it seems unlikely that just copying the files back will make them show up in iTunes. Without a record of the filenames, it won't know what's what. I can try copying the contents of the program directory as well, but there's no guarantee that it will see all the files after a re-install. All the third party programs for extracting files from the backups are either commercial, or severely limited.

6,000 files you say? go buy a small pack(about 5 or 10) of DVD-R with 4.7GB of storage. I don't know anything about apple or apple products but if any music happens to be "gone" as in deleted from your itunes library, you should re-obtain it back by simply re-downloading it from the itunes when you are connected to the internet. It should be locked to you're account forever, that is if you purchased it.

If you however use a satellite connection to connect to the internet or some mobile device, i would recommend try to find some way of getting them backed up otherwise its gonna use up you're entire bandwidth allowance(s). good luck.

She hasn't bought any music, only apps. Plus she has photos and videos shot with her phone.

That article doesn't make it clear if it will backup the sync data as well and in any case, it's not practical to use iTunes itself to back up the data. I'm pretty sure that DVD burning won't work in safe mode and trying to boot the system normally is like waiting for a snail to cross a football field.

All you have to do is find compatible Memory, only found OnLine with Model Number of Dell or with Tag Number at Dell Support. Buy a new HDD Seagate or WD, and load the Windows XP. Then put the existing HDD as a Secondary. Then you can access any Files you want, but you will have to reload any Programs with the original software.

Well, she's a friend, but I'm not about to spend $100+ to fix her system, and she wouldn't want to spend that kind of money on it either.

Plus, that doesn't solve the problem of iTunes. If the new installation of iTunes doesn't have all the same data as the old one, it will see that there's nothing on the computer and want to sync that to the phone. In other words, it will want to erase everything off her phone so that it matches the new, empty installation of iTunes.

What a stupid system!

Well you can find a refurbished HDD, and put in at least one more stick or 1Gb of total of RAM and maybe that would cost about $50. Then you would install iTunes on the new HDD and Import the Files you need from the old HDD. I don't care too much for Apple because they have a lot of proprietary stuff, but it should have an option like this. Otherwise, you are going to spend a lot of time and money learning and getting the right External HDD or Flash Drive to back-up the right Files. If you don't do it right you will lose everything, trust me I have been there.

Not as far as I can see. You can import music and maybe videos, but for things like apps, contacts, etc. there's no import option.

There are various guides on the net for transferring the files to a new computer, but they're all different. One says that the apps for mobile devices are stored in the iTunes Media directory, but the only such directory I can find, doesn't have anything large enough to be a single app, let alone several.
said by alchav:

Which is exactly why I'm not even going to try. I'm not going to be the one who screws it up and causes her to lose everything.

She's going to see if the Verizon store where she bought the phone can transfer the contents from the phone to a 'new' computer. If so, then I'd be willing to re-install the system and she can let them worry about her phone.

Frankly, the whole iPhone/iTunes system is really screwed up. Any designer with half a brain should have made the sync optionally go both ways. New computer? No problem, just sync the computer with the phone. Failing that, there should be an option to transfer everything to a new computer. As it is, without taking steps that are well beyond the average user (trust me, even finding the Apple directories is like brain surgery to most people), your phone is forever locked to the first system you sync it with, unless you want to risk having it wiped.

Apparently there are third party programs that can do it, but it's a crapshoot which one to buy and I'm not about to risk losing all her data by experimenting, especially when I have absolutely no experience with either the iPhone or iTunes. The time to do that is when the phone is new and you don't have much on it, not when you have gigs of stuff that you don't want to lose.

A woman wanted me to fix the computer she was using in her kitchen, I brought it home, but something told me not to bring it in the house, so I opened it up on the table on the garage porch. Do I have to tell you what crawled out? No wonder it was experiencing a lot of intermittent problems. I'm glad I opened it up away from the house.

What bug spray will kill cockroaches and not have an effect on the components inside the computer? It's been sitting outside for a couple of days now, do you think the cockroaches have all left? I'm wondering if I should even bring it inside.

Yes, I like paying higher prices for lower quality. I'll just give them unlimited access to my bank account and let them take what they want. $100/Mo. for 56K dialup speeds, can't wait!

Got a steroid injection

Decided to cancel the surgery on my carpal tunnel since it wasn't bothering me as bad since I was splinting it at night and it's slowly improving from that.

I've decided to try a steroid injection in the carpal tunnel and so far so good. I'm getting one in my shoulder on Monday (shoulder is bothering me) and hopefully I can come off the Celebrex.

Maybe I'll need one in my Sciatic nerve.

The drug they use is called Kenalog.

A 30 year old male shouldn't be taking 5-6 different medications. Some of them are psych (for the autism) but I have some prescription NSIADs, antacids (Protonix), allergy (singulair, Zyrtec, Veramyst). I'm hoping to lose the Celebrex with the steroid injections.

As for allergy pills that are OTC, best place to buy those is the warehouse clubs like BJ's or Costco.

Maybe I have a doctor that's a pill pusher, I rarely get to see my own doctor; usually I get shoved off to a PA that just pushes more pills instead of looks for the underlying cause. But this is in Massachusetts which has the worst healthcare in America.

After 17 years...

I may be getting the ride I always wanted. First time I saw the Navigator in 1997 I wanted it. I'm close right now with an Aviator, but it's getting stale. Been looking for a while now, and came across a 2011 that is around my criteria of 35,000 miles or less for $35,000 or less asking price. Has all the toys I want. Nav system with integrated Sirius XM, THX II Premium Audio System, front and second row climate controlled seating, moon roof, Microsoft Sync and the rest. Would like keyless ignition, and not too crazy and the darker tan interior, but whatever. Heading out in a little bit to check it out and see what kind of price I can get to get my self back into car payment debt for an overpriced Expedition with a chrome grille.

Sad news

Just received a phone call today that my grandmother's husband passed.

Now we're trying to figure how to get grandma (who is in a rehab in Massachusetts) to his funeral up in Maine.

We are talking logistics, grandma can barely get out of bed unassisted and if we take her our of the nursing home for a day or two they will consider that a discharge under Medicare regulations and she won't be able to get back in without a qualifying three day inpatient hospital stay.

I feel bad enough about the situation.

Goooooooo Uconn!

Underdog UConn Stuns Florida, Advances to Title Game

In a major Final Four upset, No. 7 seed Connecticut advanced to Monday's national championship with a 63-53 win over the Florida Gators, who had been undefeated since their Dec. 2 loss to Connecticut.

The unexpected win sets the Huskies up to play for their second title in four years and sent the Gators home with a 30-3 record but not the hardware they were chasing.

I was glad to see Florida lose. They run a school where athletes are mostly criminals but who are protected by an admin and local law enforcement that look the other way due to jock worship. As long as they keep winning at all costs.

And the freshmen dominated Kentucky makes it to final game as a #8 seed. So the #7 and 8 seeds play for the championship. It has been a great tournament so far. Too bad Kentucky will lose players to NBA draft so fast. Could you imagine how good Kentucky would be if those freshmen played together for 3 more years.

Five shot last night

Turned on the morning news this morning, five people shot in three separate incidents in Springfield, MA. This city is starting to really go downhill, I'm thinking of moving up to Maine but that would be a hard decision but there are some probate issues that need to be worked out first. It would be better for Grandma as her house is all one level.

Gun control ain't working. Time to restore our second amendment rights for us law abiding citizens.
