My town holds a yearly town wide tag/yard sale event that is well known for being one of the largest in VA. This year was generally a wash in terms of old tech, cameras, or fountain pens but I did find a very nice Western Electric 302 telephone set for $20:
It was a lot dirtier before I took that photo.
It was assembled in 1947 and refurbished in 1958 by Western Electric for Cincinnati Bell. How a phone from the Cincinnati Bell area ended up in C&P Telephone territory I have no idea, but it did. Someone must have moved with it.
It cleaned up very nicely after a few hours work. Of course being a Western Electric set it works perfectly with no repair. Calls are clear and the ringer is crisp. The dial is even fairly smooth given the age! This is the slightly less common model with a switch to disable the ringer electrically.
I took it apart, washed the plastics in soapy warm water, and re-assembled it. Then I applied 3M plastic protectant to it so that nice piano black shine would return.
