White Spaces and Wireless Broadband
Conference to open up innovative possibilities
by KathrynV Saturday 29-Sep-2007 tags: wireless · alternatives
The opening up of spectrum white spaces has spurred the proliferation of numerous ideas about how to best use that space. The White Spaces Coalition is working on getting FCC approval for their spectrum-seeking device, Google has proposed real-time auction use of the spectrum and other innovators are getting their ideas prepared to get involved in the game. All of these creative ideas are making it difficult for the people in charge to determine the best way to utilize the spectrum. A one-day event to be held in Washington D.C. next week will spark more conversation to add to the topic. The lengthy name of the event tells all about its purpose: “Driving Wireless Broadband and Innovation (How Opening Up Unused “White Spaces” on the Airwaves Will Drive Wireless Innovation)”.

New America Foundation distorts facts

Yet broadcasters seek to lock up this unused spectrum and in so doing, seek to limit innovation and consumer choice.
The reason broadcasters are concerned about white space use by unlicensed users is legitimate. Those kinds of uses are typically disruptive to the nearby licensed frequencies. And for the New America Foundation to write off their concerns as an attempt to thwart innovation is typical overblown rhetoric by some group with an axe to grind.
