Just what I would expect from the New York TimesIs it a slow left-wing news day today? Because that has to be one of the most uninformed, poorly written articles about the internet that I have seen in a long time, and that is saying a lot. If it's more than 5 years old throw it away? Some routers that are 5 years old are better than most of what they are selling now, aside of the advent of 802.11ax, which not everybody needs yet and not every client device can take advantage of. This applies double if they have professional gear. Then it tells you to download Speedtest and says that if your speed drops below 15 megabits when you get further away from your router that your router is probably the problem. No, there are several other factors that come into play. One of those factors besides ones that actually affect the Wi-Fi, like outside interference, is the internet itself because you should be doing a local network test to measure your Wi-Fi speed. Also new routers are allowed to be 20 times more powerful? Well, that's half true. Only in the lower 5GHz band. I personally run all my APs at low power because the power of your client device is finite plus it helps prevent things like waveform distortion and multipath interference. Not to mention nothing goes through a thick wall better than another radio on the other side of it and your client is more likely to roam effectively when the APs are at lower power. My experience with my Wi-Fi has been tenfold better running things only at the power needed. I don't know where they find these reporters but they should just give up reporting about technology. I cringed so many times while reading that. | |
