California town gives in to fear
05:01PM Monday Mar 24 2008 by Karl
tags: business · wireless · hardware · SONIC.NET
The town of Sebastopol, California had planned to throw up a few wireless access points downtown, until a few locals, obsessed with "electrical sensitivity," derailed the effort. According to the O'Reilly blog, said locals banded together and signed a petition against the project, citing research that shows Wi-Fi is hazardous to your health.

The only problem being, as we've stated repeatedly, that there is no such research. That doesn't seem to stop a growing number of anti-Wi-Fi groups who like to cite the non-existent evidence anyway. Sonic.net CEO Dane Jasper says his company was going to install the system at their expense (not taxpayer funded), and blogs about the plan here:
If you’ve got concerns at this point, please let me put things into perspective. Wi-Fi signals are typically 0.1 watt. Compare this to the mobile phone that you keep in your pocket, which is typically three to ten times this power level. When it’s at it’s highest power level, you hold it next to your head to conduct a conversation. Ever notice that your skin gets warm after a long call? That’s the only side effect of RF energy - warming. That is how microwave ovens work, at a much higher power level of 500-700 watts.

Yeahhhhh....Hitler tried to change that...

It's also the beauty of democracy....it lets ALL voices be heard...not just the morons who THINK they're smart....or should be the only voices heard.

There is more REAL research needing to be done. If I can take a fluorescent bulb and walk under power lines and have it light up and said power lines cannot be put up within so many feet of schools and other locations...then there might be some validity to any claim. They certainly found connections between power lines and health before...it can happen again with all the tons of RF floating around. Could be some strange combination of one combined with another...that they haven't discovered yet.

Any asshat who purports to know everything there is to know about the physiology of every human on earth, how their unique body reacts to every radio wave, every sound wave, everything that touches everybody...is a moron. Truth IS, we DON'T know and CAN'T know...

Until more IS done to study it....and not paid for by the people who stand to make money...REAL research...then NOBODY...not even the self-proclaimed experts in this thread can say squat one way OR the other.

Until PROVEN beyond a reasonable doubt....anything can be true....
It's shown time and time and time again...."experts" who say "That can't BE!" are proven wrong years later with better instruments and studies. The inverse is also true....

ahem

@nwhsrx.com

Re: Idiots in action!

You do know that the studies have proven otherwise, right?

The fluorescant bulb trick only works directly UNDER the lines, and the EMF field falls off at a geometric rate the further you are from the lines.. 20m away, and there's almost nothing.

damned hippies...

Hey, now the telcos and cable companies can use groups like this to stop muni-wifi efforts. No complaining about tax dollars - just tell the residents they will all die from wireless.

Wi-Fi for Sebastopol

Sonic.net is the ISP who had a contract to install access points to provide free Wi-Fi on city light poles, at our expense (the project is not taxpayer supported).

Here's my blog article on this topic from this weekend: »corp.sonic.net/blog/2008/03/23/s···ontract/

And the local newspaper (the comments are interesting): »www1.pressdemocrat.com/article/2···ate=kart

Meanwhile, our Wi-Fi mesh deployments in other communities are doing well, with over 250 users per day utilizing the free network. Info and a map linked here: »www.sonic.net/wifi/

are irrational beings if one thinks something is real then it becomes real hence the placebo effect in medicine

if one believes wi-fi is bad for you one tends to think it is the cause of your problems

So the answer should be to have big headlines in the local newspapers: "WiFi Problems All Solved" "No one can get hurt by WiFi anymore", maybe that would convince them they were all better

that's correct if it said wifi was good for health ppl would probably actually claim it helped them

just like when they had on the radio years ago that there was an alien attack (it was a show pretended to be a news broadcast)even though there was no attack ppl were panicked they left there house stoves caught fire ppl blamed aliens and all heck broke loss

So just what do you think marketing is based on?? It may not necessarily be big bold and large print in the newspaper, but they use the ability to suggest in advertising and after one hears it enough that start to believe it.

These people remind me of the type of individual that no matter how strong the evidence is they put their hands over their ears, close their eyes, shake their head, and loudly say, "La, la, la, la" over and over again.

Just goes to show you that some people will always take their beliefs and fears and trump them over reality and reason. I guess irrationality is one of the prices we have to pay for being the most intelligent organisms on the planet

safety is good..

It's good to investigate these things, but low level radiation effects on people have been tested plenty of times with no bad results. Being near a high power line could have some effects, wifi isn't powerful enough to do anything though. Of course, it IS microwave radiation

How can a few people derail an effort? What about democracy? I'd think it should take more than a few.

Re: Hot Head

If I remember my phys chem (it's been a while) RF emissions cause changes in rotational states of molecules, while microwave ovens are set up to cause changes in the bending and stretching frequencies of the bonds in water and most fats (which is how they heat food). Not the same thing at all—there's a lot more energy in a microwave.

RF emissions don't have anywhere near enough energy to actually alter chemical bonds (and thus cause cancer).

Fun fix

If the city would like to get rid of these nuts, just string a few dozen high-tension power lines over the downtown apartments. That should quickly clear the area of any wi-fi pansies.

The first problem

...is the blatant lying from these people. No WiFi in London or any other major European city? WTF?

....In Europe they are much more advanced than us, and there wifi is not allowed in cities in the European commonwealth....

»radar.oreilly.com/archives/2008/···ifi.html

These fruitloops have absolutely NO credibility whatsoever. Since there is no valid research that shows WiFi is "hazardous" to health, town councils should ignore them and not cave into them. Rather, they should be directed to the nearest psychiatrist to treat their hypochondria.

Maybe these people are hired shills for the telcos. I can't imagine why else they would make an asses out of themselves when they know how easily they are proved wrong.

Nope. The town is run by a bunch of kooks. Be thankful you live 100x farther away from there as I do.

Lastest population estivate for Sebastopol is 7500. Superpages.com lists 67 providers of Mental Health Services in Sebastopol, CA, nearly 1 for every 100 residents! I suspect that's a booming industry there.

Re: The first problem

DOStradamus: you are misrepresenting Sebastopol.

Sebastopol is the shopping center for all of West Sonoma county, and even for a reasonable part of Western Santa Rosa.

Using the same switchboard.com as you used you can see that on a per capita basis we have far more gas stations, restaurants, and grocery stores as Santa Rosa (those were the only services I looked up).

For example:

We have one gas station for every 937 residents, as compared to one for each 3,650 residents of Santa Rosa.

We have one 'mental health services' per 112 residents, versus one per 335 in Santa Rosa.

Your assertion that only 'kooks' use mental health services
seems unworthy.

Science! I love it when the facts are viewed with objectivity.

It's rhetoric that got us into this "ban the Wi-Fi" situation, so I love your statistics Rich.

The net result (DOS) is that it doesn't take a large population of irrational but vocal people to sway the political process. The outcome is the same, but it's painting with a more narrow brush.
