There's no solid scientific evidence that Wi-Fi is a health hazard, but that hasn't stopped a parade of people from trying to stop Wi-Fi deployment. In the U.S., teachers have sued schools to derail installs, while angel guidance consultants have launched campaigns against Wi-Fi in their free time.

In Canada, colleges have banned Wi-Fi, equating it to "second hand smoke." In the UK, some say they can feel the impact when they enter a room, while others have started using Wi-Fi blocking paint (at $492 per can) and sleep under silver plated mosquito netting.

Click for full size
The scare-mongering in the UK wasn't helped by a recent BBC report that falsely claimed that Wi-Fi creates three times as much radiation as mobile phone masts. The sensationalist program resulted in some London politicians attempting to ban Wi-Fi use in schools. An official BBC complaints ruling has subsequently found the program was misleading.
Ben Goldacre, a doctor who runs the Bad Science website, stated that the programme makers had made melodramatic, misleading television instead of an informed documentary. "In 28 minutes of TV you could have given a good summary of the research evidence so that people could make up their own minds. But that would not get you as many viewers," he said.
A great quote from ITWeek columnist Les Hatton: "All I can say in reassurance is that this sort of mathematically dysfunctional scare-mongering drivel really makes me cross." As an aside, check out this entertaining cartoon at Wellington Grey that takes aim at the media's reaction to the great Wi-Fi menace.

Re: nice

D-LINK/Cisco should sue them for that negative depiction of their products.

OOOOOH, my neighbors 50 milliwatt(50/1000ths of 1 watt) WiFi is killing my children, but the 1000 watt microwave oven that cooked their dinner tonight is perfectly safe.

Someone needs to get a life, and hope that the new cell tower down the street actually kills the E.Coli, and Salmonella, that would actually threaten your family.

When will people learn...

that there is a difference between ionizing radiation and nonionizing radiation? Wi-Fi falls in the latter of these two groups and is harmless.

Perhaps I'll wear my tinfoil hat just in case...

Don't use tinfoil!! It collects all those wifi gasmarays and just bounces them around in your brain until you think it's actually working.
I know exactly what I'm gonna do with my wifi equipment when it dies...I'm gonna make a helmet out of it that's tinfol proof!

Viruses and Worms are killed by the radiation. Trojans are just latex balloons and we all know most people don't get nearly enough latex in their diet.

Besides, do you have ANY IDEA WHAT'S IN A HOT DOG? That'll kill ya long before the radiation does

The Poison is in the Dosage

Sure, get a strong enough signal and you could boil the blood in my body. That's why we have teams of engineers developing these technologies under heavy government oversight.

But I guess people are sheep and will believe anything. Better get rid of my cell too.

Well, the first part is right. The government oversight isn't all that heavy; the manufacturers are responsible for certifying that the devices meet radiated-power standards.

cordless phone...

I would guess that it has just as much of an impact as a cordless phone... considering they both operate at 2.4 Ghz and go about just as far... I've had my cordless and wifi close to the same frequency before... on the cordless it gets a bunch of static and is hard to hear the other person... I ended up buying a 5.8 ghz phone so they dont interfere anymore... but I would imagine that they are both have the same effect... not to mention you dont have the intenna right next to your head like a cordless phone...

Radio, TV, Microwave ovens, Computers, Automobiles, Motorcycles, Electricity, etc and all People who say that all devices that use Electricity in any form are unsafe(Luddites).

Some people will listen to anybody and claim anything, Their NUTS and need to be in a straight jacket.

Ban the microwave? Are you crazy? I would have to eat out all the time!!!

Now, a $500 fine for talking on a cellphone on the road in Florida would be okay with me. Idiots at Yellow Cab have nearly hit me 4-5 times this year alone chatting on their cellphones. Regular drivers maybe 9-10 times. Now, stupid teens are text messaging and driving. 4 teens got killed doing that in an SUV on the highway. Gee, that's stupid!

You are about 75% more likely to have an accident, something like 75% fatal on highways, when talking and driving.

Thankfully I don't have a cell phone, It also helps If one memorizes the a/c, radio & misc controls that are within reach inside the car If ones the driver. People have too many distractions today, If You have a cell phone and want to use It pull off the road somewhere safe and use It then, That is advise from the CHP that has been mentioned on TV in the past. A 1000w Shaker 1000 Stereo CD system in the car is all I will allow, I only touch the volume when driving, Of course there is the info button that works with the dash readout for the odometer and a few other readouts that use the same LEDs in that location. And no I wouldn't ban any of those Items I mentioned, but then I like technology, Of course this Joker can cook without a microwave oven If I felt like It was really necessary, Of course I would have to get a couple of Lids for My small copper bottom sauce pans first, But I could do It none the less.

Ya

Everything is safe in moderation. This topic is hard to talk about because you get the two extremes, the people that are freaked out about wifi and then you get the sarcastic types like "put on a tin foil hat" and believe that there is no harmful radiation.

Re: Ya

The problem is they are going after just WiFi equipment. They do not realize that cell phones, microwave ovens, cordless phones and various other household appliances emit the same or more radiation than a router.

Schools wanting to ban WiFi need to also realize that they would need to ban microwave ovens. Try telling a teacher that she can't have her Lean Cuisine meal or no more microwave popcorn. The same idiots that don't want WiFi in their homes have a cordless and cell phone that they use all day long.

I'll bet that if you tried to ban cell phones instead of WiFi, you would get a very different reaction.

Oh, I believe there is harmful radiation, but Wi-Fi isn't it. Like I said ionizing vs. nonionizing. The people who freak out are just uninformed. The people who don't freak out might be uninformed too, but they also might know enough to know when to freak out.

Kill?

Guess that's why my last router died... it was too close to itself and the "harmful" radiation it was producing, huh?

Angel Guidance Consultants

WTF is an "angel guidance consultant"?

Re: Angel Guidance Consultants

i've never heard of that specific term either. my original guess was it had something to do with business angels, but after a short google and click on the link related "angel guidance consultant", i've determined that it a euphemism for 'an ignorant moron that believes that wifi is bad and will stop at nothing to spread their stupidity'. i don't know if this is right, but should be fit the context closely.

If you click one more time to the page of her consulting business you will find out that she is an expert on everything. In fact, she can make you rich, thin, happy, and tall (in no particular order). Looks like her real expertise is in separating dimwits from their money.

Your right Mike, shes just a hack pawning herself off as knowledgeable individual (about what is unclear). Shes probably an unindicted conspirator of the failed "Ms Cleo Psychic Hotline".

The really pathetic thing is that people actually give her print in any form. The next logical step is she gets her own cable series of Lifetime telling women how men cause cancer!

Sounds some sort of hokey-pokey heavenly air traffic controller to me. They probably want to make sure angels wear GPS trackers and can fly within 1 mile of each other. I bet they get over worked and end up making mistakes. The government should regulate this sort of thing. */sarcasm*

How about Satellite

Has anyone ever studied the effects of Signals coming from Satellites such as directv or any other type of satellite provider? I'm sure that if there was something bad about wifi we would have heard about it from any type of wireless signal. I do know that they are at different frequency ranges but still.

This whole idea is absolutely ludicrous! Here's what folks really ought to worry about: The Sun!! 30 minutes unprotected in the sun, for many folks, will have a noticable effect upon their skin. 300 -hours- of sitting right next to wifi? No effect whatsoever.

Besides, it's only factory firmware that eats babies. OpenWRT firmwares are perfectly safe.

dimitri_24

@forthnet.gr

Well I myself have disabled it... and I stay away from that

I have a linksys wi-fi router and my room is pretty small.

Whenever I enable wireless, after 10 minutes or so, I feel something on my head. An annoyance, a pressure I can't say exactly. But I can clearly feel it.

I first felt that the first day I got the router (never had used wireless before that) and it was shocking for me.

This is not only me, but also some friends of mine, have felt this whenever I have wireless enabled in my room. Comments like "I am not good, I feel something on my head, I have a strange boredom in my mind" and things like that after they have stay some amount of time in my place. And most of my friends don't even know what Internet and Windows means (let alone wireless).

From there on, I have the wireless option always disabled and I just use Ethernet.

This is my opinion.

Really? If you can demonstrate this ability in a double-blind manner (i.e., have in a way so that neither you nor the person running the experiment knows if the router is on or off until after the experiment is over), then you'll probably become famous. Get someone to write up the results and have them published in a peer--reviewed journal. Let other researchers duplicate your results. You may be on to a heretofore-unkown capability of the human physiology. You have the opportunity to really add to the body of human knowledge. There could even be a Nobel Prize in it for somebody.

Or, a double-blind experiment may end up confirming that you can't reliably detect the radiation without knowing beforehand that the router is turned off or on, and it's just the psychosomatic power of suggestion. No Nobel Prize for you.

Edit: Oh, and watch out for those Etherent cables. They're unshielded, and even though they're twisted-pair, they'll emit radiation as well. So does the plastic-cased router itself, BTW.
