Wikileaks German Domain Suspended
As countries react poorly to leaked blacklists...

As a growing number of countries and ISPs attempt to filter the Internet of all its naughty bits, whistle-blowing and document sharing website Wikileaks has been ruining their party by posting a list of all the filtered URLs. Last month that resulted in German authorities raiding the home of the owner of the "wikileaks.de" domain. This month, German authorities managed to get Germany's registration authority DENIC to suspend the domain without notice, according to an alert posted to Wikileaks:

quote:
The action comes two weeks after the house of the German WikiLeaks domain sponsor, Theodor Reppe, was searched by German authorities. Police documentation shows that the March 24, 2009 raid was triggered by WikiLeaks' publication of Australia's proposed secret internet censorship list. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) told Australian journalists that they did not request the intervention of the German government.
The leaked blacklists show that in addition to child pornography and child "modeling" websites, the filters block legitimate and legal pornography sites -- as well as poker, euthanasia and abortion websites. In contrast, reports in the German Press have DENIC denying the government was involved, and arguing that the Wikileaks German domain owner screwed up.

There have been several attempts to purge Wikileaks from the Internets. Last year, Swiss bank Julius Baer managed to convince a California Judge to temporarily yank the Wikileaks domain offline for posting internal material exposing the bank for money laundering. Wikileaks certainly made more corporate and government enemies over the weekend by publishing a rough draft of the controversial Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement.

guess the list is for more then kiddie porn

because otherwise why try and keep it a secret, rather then use it a trophy of "hey we blocked and know the domains known for trafficking this stuff, and will also try and take actions against the owners".

Re: guess the list is for more then kiddie porn

Yep. The reason they want the list secret is so people won't know when they slip things onto the list that shouldn't be there---- websites critical of the Government or exposing powerful corporations; websites of political activists, etc etc

so how can they really prevent a list?

I mean really? I type a site, it gets blocked, I write it down. I get another site that is blocked, write it down. Before long I have a list of the sites being blocked. How is this really secret information?

Re: so how can they really prevent a list?

um well when you cant view it OH well you move on to another secret site

the next guy however is deprived of said site can not know and thus is an ignorant

precisely what facists like.

Also as time goes on next move is banning you form all sites and you are only allowed to goto sites they approve

THAT'S ACTA PART2

Because every time you try to access a blocked site, your attempt to access it is recorded. Accumulate enough hits on the naughty list and it's reeducation for you!

How long?

The Internet, being the mostly free medium that it is, will simply migrate the information to another site. So what if you can get Wikileaks.de shut down, how are you going to manage that in a country with less stringent censorship laws? It only takes one site that is not censored to render this entire discussion meaningless.

Ultimately what we're going to see is countries that don't sign to the censorship of the Internet being booted from the net all together, but the beauty of the net is that it is what we make it.

Then time to make the Internet a National Intranet.

Someone needs to tell Germany, and especially the U.K., that 1984 is not an instruction manual.

More concerned about government action than wikileaks.

The governments of the world are a far greater threat to individuals (especially when they secretly operate) than wikileaks could ever be.

Not as much the governments themselves, but the governments as the executive arm of multinational corporations.

Re: secret ACTA "Anti-counterfiet bill"

I knew about it for awhile now, it's funny that they are naming it "Anti-counterfeit"

when it's really about copyright enforcement.

Why are they trying to hide this?
Why is it a secret?

I find this stuff out a little bit later than most. I am not online as often as others (I mainly netflix while online). Today, I am checking everywhere for updates only because I left work early due to being sick...I hate colds that make your throat swell...

UM your finding out about that now?

UM its been going on for almost a year.

USA govt wants a counterfeiting bill to be national security and most of it is aimed at 1984 style thought control , creates new powers and effectively and covertly like hitler did removes citizen rights in favor of corporate entities that give the state more power regardless of what you or i do.

then they just bribe them er lobby them and guess what

Clearly we'll need some international para-judicial force broadly authorized to search, seize, arrest, and investigate "intellectual property" crimes. I know-- we can call it the "General Enforcement Service for Trade And Profit Optimization." The acronym will no doubt become broadly recognized, and strike fear into the hearts of intellectual criminals everywhere.

Why doesn't Germany just blacklist the IP? Judge orders all the inter-country telecom providers to filter it on their core router firewalls.

wow

it's truly astounding how the german and australian people would put up with something like this, what's with them??. just to think a small group of people would dictate what people can visit on the internet would be allowed by the people is unthinkable!!!. can't the germans and australians think for themselves anymore??. do they really need a dictatorship?? this is not the only issue related to dictatorship, there have been many others!!..

So....Germany Still Kicks In People's Doors For No Reason

SIEG HEIL!

It seems the Gestapo never went away.

What in the hell did the guy who runs Wikileaks do to the German government? Nothing.

What German laws did he break?

None.

Yet they still raided his house.

That is lawsuit material.

It is good we have people like this guy around.

Freedom of Information is a good thing in this day and age, where the powers that be still try to censor everything, and still try to dictate what we think and how we feel.

AUF WIEDERSEHEN!
