Wilkes Barre Finally Gets Their Wi-Fi7-square-mile network at the end of a long road... ( old news - 10:01AM Friday May 11 2007) tags: Fiber · business · wireless · alternatives · municipalBack in 2003, a Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, businessman wanted to use the city's old steam ducts to run fiber, and as far as we can tell, he's still trying. In 2004, the city began planning a seven-square-mile Wi-Fi network, but had to navigate a Pennsylvania law lobbied for by Verizon that stifled muni-deployment. In 2006, the city struck a Wi-Fi deal, but then pulled out of it for its own financial protection. It's 2007 and the city has chosen Frontier Communications to deploy the network, which the city says will finally be completed by the end of 2007.

I live in the Mayflower section, far away from the crime ridden streets of the down town area.
I moved into this area from Connecticut and went through a time warp of about ten to fifteen years.
I hate the CommonWealth of Pennsylvania and plan on moving out of this backwards state by the end of the year.

I lived there after college. It's safer than Allentown, has more of a community feel than the Lehigh Valley, more opportunity than areas like Hazleton and Williamsport, and doesn't have the traffic problems of Stroudsburg. Sure, Public Square has some goofy people walking around while the buses are running, but it's still better than Scranton, Hazleton or Reading. | |

| As one born in Wilkes-Barre and raised in Kingston who has since lived all over North America, I can state that it was a good place to grow up (in the 50's and 60's when the dress factories were humming away).
Now, as I return to visit, I see a depressed, run down area in the rust belt with few jobs (unless you are in the medical community)and a failing infrastructure.
That said, anything that the current residents can do to "awaken" the community, such as free wi-fi in the downtown area, can only be a positive for the community. | |

The winner of the bid for the WI-FI Free Wilkes Barre is none other than Frontier Communications. In case you have forgotten, Frontier (aka Citizens Communications) just bought out Commonwealth Telephone (CTCO), THE PHONE COMPANY (ILEC) in Wilkes Barre!!! This is the equivalent of Verizon deploying municipal WI-FI in Scranton where they are the ILEC.
This explains many things about the bid including why Wilkes Barre only needed 10 days from the time of the bid announcement until the bid was awarded. Anyone smell a deal that was cooked and a foregone conclusion before the IFP was even announced? | |
