Will Comcast/NBC Merger Conditions Be Meaningful? Comcast kicking back at rules concerning Internet video With Comcast and NBC's immense lobbying firepower, there's virtually no chance their merger will be denied by regulators -- and while there will be some conditions, recent history suggests the conditions may only give a quick nod to substantive consumer protections. According to the Wall Street Journal however, these conditions will be "significant," focused largely on preventing Comcast from withholding, or threatening to withhold, NBC Universal's programming from competitors. The Journal also claims that the FCC is considering imposing some kind of network neutrality requirements on Comcast's network: The FCC is looking at all parts of Comcast and NBC Universal's combined online-video distribution chain for ways Comcast could promote content over its rivals. The agency is considering imposing a "net neutrality" condition on Comcast's Internet network, banning it from deliberately slowing or blocking legal traffic. FCC staff members are meeting twice a week with commission Chairman Julius Genachowski about the deal and have set an internal deadline of circulating proposed conditions by mid-December, according to a person familiar with the review. Given the contentiousness of network neutrality and the FCC's seeming unwillingness to seriously tackle this issue, any neutrality language will likely be very vague and focused on simple transparency -- if it even survives the final cut at the FCC. According to the Journal, final DOJ approval could come within weeks, though Comcast is apparently kicking back at any proposed conditions that would cover Internet video.

Not sure what the issue is here with this merger.. it's network television.. and as MANY people state, "there's nothing but garbage on TV these days"... so really.. who cares?
Besides, I think the point largely missed here is that the government has yet to show the consumer, or correctly - the people it serves, that it will ever do anything that is FOR the people..
Doesn't matter if it's dem or republican, they all work for the same bosses.
I'm still going to stand behind what I've said all along.. the people CAN take back control of the government and all it does when the people stop turning to it for everything it needs. The government, the more it grows, in itself is becoming more and more sociopathic, mostly because there are a crap load of sociopaths that run it. (look up sociopath to understand what I'm talking about)
The only way the government draws it's power and gets better and better and exchange of power from the people to the corps is when people give them power in the first place.
Want this to stop? .. then stop patronizing the government's customers.
Let Comcast and NBC do it's things.. don't like it, turn your back on NBC.. turn your back on Comcast. Don't like their product, dump their tea in the harbor. And, when they come back with a tempting offer, don't take the temptation. It WILL take time AND sacrafice on the part of the people, but sooner or later, the government and the corps will starve... which is what they're trying to do to us now..
my 25 cents. | |

Its so close now, that regulating one part without the order doesnt make any sense. It's getting to the point that cable companies really need to deliver video via IP.
Making the distinction that watching something online is different than watching it via TV even though the data is going through the exact same cable is kind of stupid.

| FCC payback quote: The agency is considering imposing a "net neutrality" condition on Comcast's Internet network, banning it from deliberately slowing or blocking legal traffic.
This condition is certainly understandable and absolutely necessary in order to insure that Comcast doesn't begin their "traffic shaping" and blocking of legal traffic as they have done in the past. Comcast has blocked legal traffic in the past . . . and then lied about it to the FCC.

Comcast, Time Warner, Cox, DishNetwork, DirecTV, AT&T, Verizon, CableVision - these are all corporations/companies that should be barred from being in both businesses at the same time. OR, Comcast, for example, if they want to own NBC, should not be allowed to carry their own signals. I'm even willing to go that far to stick my neck out for this one. This is no different than Bank of America being an investment AND a depository bank - its a conflict of interest.

No one watches/believes TV propoganda anymore and ppl are getting their fix online so this massive global awakening is worrying those who thrive on keeping the sheeple in line therefore the only way "news" & entertainment networks will be able to stay relevant will be to merge with ISP's which will coincide with internet 2.0's restrictive regulations that will ban all alternative/questionable content but will conveniently force...i mean continue to provide mainstream ideas and bring forth the same people's champions to the new and improved zombie vision near you!
