Wimax Returns to Earth
Skepticism increases as do delays
A reasoned and practical analysis (imagine that!) of Wimax comes from the Economist, who says what we've been saying for months: "prospects for WiMax technology have been hugely overhyped." No true Wimax gear has been sold; and while the technology holds promise as a niche solution first and broader application later, it is not - as Intel once called it - "the most important thing since the Internet itself."

Annoying...

This stuff has been a long while coming, without much to show at this point. It still seems to have promise but someone needs to step it up. By the way, for those of you who do not regulary read the Economist, you dont know what you are missing!!

Observe the Lack of Interest

Looks like WiMAX is finally generating the appropriate level of interest ... zero.

WiMax is WiOk

WiMax deserves some level of interest. To me it is a standardized spec of many things that are already being done or soon to be done. That is a good thing but it's not revolutionary or anything.

The hype was only believed by people who don't know any better. Such as the mass media.

Agreed. It is interesting and furthers the technology. Other than that someone needs to make marketeers listen to engineers a bit better.

WiMAX doesn't solve key problems

The big problem with WiMAX is that it doesn't solve the big problems that exist in the wireless broadband world today. Unlicensed spectrum will still be a jungle; WISPs will still interfere with one another and can still be put out of commission by a cordless phone in the wrong place; the FCC will still not allocate spectrum exclusively for wireless broadband, require spectrum etiquettes, or allow WISPs enough power to make their access points economical. Those are the problems that need solving -- not coming up with yet another radio protocol.

WIMAX is alive and well in NY MA IL CA TowerStream

We have over 600 full speed T-1 subscribers, no problems to speak of aside from a spot we can't hit every now and then. TowerStream was the first Service Provider to join the WIMAX forum, and our gear is already very close to the spec which will very soon become certified as the industry standard. There are no interference issues. The problems don't need to be solved, the speeds and robustness are there, we have been doing this for almost five years. Because of a lack of an industry standard, many people don't realize the extent to which pre-WIMAX installations have already been proven. Past efforts from now-bankrupt companies have left a sour taste, but things have turned around with huge private efforts like TowerStream's.
