Win95/98 Users - You are not alone! By Ina Fried Staff Writer, CNET News.com Microsoft can stop selling older operating systems, and it can even stop supporting them, but that doesn't mean that customers won't still use them. Even though Microsoft said this week that it will stop distributing Windows 98 at the end of this month, a new study shows that a substantial number of businesses, both large and small, are still using it. | | I Still Use Win9X !!! On my son's Win98SE box and my wife's Win95C {OSR 2.5} box. Not as stable as XP Home Edition running on my new Compaq, but hey, not everybody has the newest & latest hardware {quite the contrary} ... so they don't need the latest OS either. Win9X was "good" in its day, and it remains useful and "good" even today! Long live 9X !!!!! Warmly, Ran -- "But now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love." WIN98SE is still alive and well here although I must confess that I dual boot to XP where I spend the lion's share of my time. WIN98SE is sort of a "security blanket" for me until I get comfortable with the NT kernel.
| | | | | Re: I Still Use Win9X !!! I'll probably use WIN98SE until they kick me off. Has always given me what I want and need. Maybe I'll get a new puter for Christmas(Hint) | |

| keith2468Premium,MVM join:2001-02-03 Winnipeg, MB | I use W98SE on my 300MHz PII. It is upgraded to 386Mbytes of memory, 10G + 20G HDD, but the early LX chipset -- so probably it would labor too hard under XP. Works just fine with W98 though.
Also XP is to expensive for a computer that is only used occasionally. (New computer is a P4.)

Too bad you can't get discounts on Microsoft OSes these days! At least I know of none! -- "But now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love." (1 Cor. 13:13)

Yes you can, it's called ebay. You can still buy authentic, new is shrinkwrap versions of Win98SE OEM for cheaper than you can buy it at computer distributors. All you have to do is buy a piece of hardware with it to be legal and they usually just throw that in for nothing. You can buy retail versions as well but I don't see anything other than upgrade versions. If you've got a legally purchased version of Windows 3.0 or 3.1 somewhere then you can legally use this software. Assuming you can get a legal version of Windows 3.1 at a junk dealer somewhere for pennies you can save yourself a fair bit of money.

| | | Small Business "locked" to Win 98..here's why.... I own a small business....20 employees.....14 Computer users all on Win98se. (PIII 500's,600's,733)
My Manufacturing Business software along with other cad/cam/digitizing software are all Win98se based. In order to "upgrade" these programs to XP it will cost about $30,000 as these programs are very specific to my industry.
The only advantage to upgrading is they will work with XP...not much more functionality at this point. So why pay $30 G's...thats a 2 yr marketing budget!!
I buy 3 yr old off lease compaq's from e-bay whenever I need a faster machine or a "new" one for an additional employee. Everything works great!! (I tried a new XP Pro machine.....it was a nitemare....had to trade it out with another PIII from home)
Bottom line many small business owners will have to upgrade ALL there software to go to XP....PLUS the Computers...who needs the expense when all is well Now!

Can't say I blame you, that is outrageous! My wife and I took trip to NYC few months ago {September} and I noticed even at the monstrous New York Public Library, their machines are all running .. you guessed it .. Windows 98!

I agree, 98SE sounds like it meets your needs just fine and there are no major security risks given your use of it. Happy New Year! -- "But now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love." (1 Cor. 13:13)
| | | | Actually, 98se has more business functionality than WinXP Home. XP Home does not have client for MS Networks like Win98se has so you can't log into domains like you can in Win98se. There are a few other things as well but the bottom line is that XP Home is NOT suitable for business but 98se is acceptable. | |
|
| | Isn't Win98SE still going to be sold? Unless I am mistaken, MS is only discontinuing support and sales of Win98 not Win98SE. Am I wrong? | |
