Windows Phone 7 Comes With Default Tethering
Or not!
by Karl Bode Friday 24-Sep-2010 tags: business · wireless · hardware
Microsoft has confirmed that as with previous Windows phones, Windows 7 phones will come with tethering enabled right out of the box. Brandon Watson, Microsoft's Director for Windows Phone 7, confirmed the feature on the Windows Weekly Podcast, but noted that it will be up to the carrier whether the function is enabled or not. Since Windows 7 phones will only arrive for GSM carriers this year, that means AT&T and T-Mobile. AT&T of course cripples such functionality in Android phones to force you to pay AT&T an extra toll -- whereas T-Mobile does not. The question then is: how hard will Windows Phone 7 make getting around these restrictions?

Update: Microsoft is now saying that tethering is not supported. That certainly saves AT&T the trouble of having to cripple it just to foist their $20 tethering fee on you.

Nothing new

All Windows Mobile phones have tethering.

Re: Nothing new

Exactly. And most carriers have always crippled it out-of-box too.

@cox.net

easy to fix in the past

Yes, Windows Mobile has long supported tethering out of the box and carriers have long disabled it and it's been quite trivial to re-enable it. The real question for Phone 7 is; how hard will it be to re-enable tethering? The related question given Microsoft's previous statements about Phone 7 being locked down from an apps perspective is; how hard will it be to disable the app lockdown?

O.O.

so?

So does my Droid X - It's got Bluetooth tethering on by default....

Why would I use a FUGLY and inferior mobile OS?

Windows Mobile 7 ain't out yet and it's already FUGLY and inferior? Let's give the competition a fair chance...

BTW, I have the X too...

The screenshots I've seen are HIDEOUS. Kind of like the original Motorola Blur (Backflip, Devour) but really bad.

And given no multitasking, no cut/paste, and a bunch of other things, I'd say it is inferior.

It's almost like MS is not even trying.

Well it will support multitasking the same way the iPhone does. None the less, it's pretty sad since Windows Mobile has supported multitasking, cut/paste and everything else since before smartphones even became popular.

No it doesn't. Not yet anyway.

Why doesn't anyone ever post evidence to back up their claims anymore?

You clearly don't know what multi tasking is and how the iphone does it.

Why doesn't anyone get their facts right before making false claims and acting like they know what they're talking about?

I'm not sure I understand your point:
rideboarder says it will support multitasking
You say it won't
I say it will and link to evidence
You say it won't support multitasking and don't link to evidence

And you used Ad Hominem which makes your statement even weaker:

he said it has the same multi-tasking as the iphone.

it does not.

what is the confusion here?

I have to provide the evidence because you're too lazy to google?

Here's what you ignored in the link you provided

quote:
According to our friends at Engadget, “third-party apps are actually left running in a suspended state (Microsoft calls it ‘dehydrated’) as long as the system doesn’t need any additional resources. If the user cycles back to an app, it’s resumed (‘rehydrated’) and life continues merrily along, but if the user opens other apps and the system needs additional resources, the app is killed without any indication or remorse.” Like the iPhone, the on-board music player and browser can fully run in the background, but you’re out of luck if you want Pandora to stream while you’re switching through apps.
Iphone supports 3rd party apps multi-tasking. WP7 does not.

Clear?

Edit: maybe you meant iphone pre v.4.0 . In which case you're right. But regardless, there is no multi-tasking on WP7 yet.

Who the h** wants to tether via bluetooth when you can do it via wifi(?) Not to mention you will be loading a custom ROM anyway and re-enabling it/speeding it up.

Maybe because I don't care to share my Internet with anything besides my laptop?
Maybe because I know the Verizon 3G won't saturate even a Bluetooth 2.0 link?
Maybe because my laptops come with Bluetooth?
Maybe because I can connect my phone to my laptop to also charge it?

All this without rooting or custom ROMs.

There are many reasons to use Bluetooth tethering. I can also come up with many reasons to use WiFi.

Re: so?

Connecting your phone to the laptop to charge it is a reason for bluetooth? Maybe you don't know this, but you can do the same thing with wifi, or even usb tethering.

Windows who???

Who cares...hand's up who plans on buying a Windows Phone anyway. They've lost the mobile game- too little too late to bring to the party.

Tethering out the box, didnt say what/who's box!

read between the lines......
As a MCSE and someone who's worked previously in a PR firm the statement was " works out the box" which could mean if you purchase your phone directly from Microsoft or a independent seller you will have tethering from the start . it also means you have to pay full retail for your phone. If you buy it on/from the TMO or ATT store or site, phones shipped from ATT will surely have a software/firmware lock added on in the form of an ATT add on. So as the second poster said, how easy will it be to get around it. Or the one Sprint/verizon/att is famous for buy the phone with tethering wide open but if you want to use tethering pay the extra monthly data fee, or using it as a wireless hot spot pay up as well!

YOU JAILBREAK AND IPHONE...
YOU WILL HAVE TO PRISONBREAK A WIN7 PHONE.

T-Mobile has never locked tethering on the Windows Mobile phones it's sold.

Sync with Mac?

I wonder if 7 will sync with a Mac. My iPhone 3G is out of contract and I am waiting until it gets close to the holidays to see what new stuff comes out.

Looking at it so far...

If they keep down the same road they are going currently with WP7 they can keep it and just bugger off in the mobile game. Everything about the existing Windows Mobile platform I loved they have found a way to completely eradicated in WP7. They seem to be following strictly in the footsteps of Apple and Google purely for the sake of marketshare but are completely forgetting that they were once big players in the smartphone game when the iPhone was just a wetdream for Jobs and for good reason: Windows Mobile actually STOOD OUT! I'd be happy if the original core programming of Windows Mobile still lurked behind the flashy gui so stuff like multitasking support and whatnot was still there. Wouldn't take much for hackers to get back to WM6's strengths and keep some of the glitz there. But I'm kinda doubting it.

Of course that is nothing to say of their hardware requirements that have been posted so far (though I haven't read recently to see if any ammendments have been made?). Particularly the lack of removable memory really irks me and limiting to onboard storage is pretty useless for anyone other than those just getting the device as a flashy fashion accessory.

*Currently using a WM5 enabled PocketPC PDA, WM6.1 enabled Motorola Q9c, and WM6.5 HTC Touch Pro 2*

@comcast.net

WM is dead -- get over it.

Everyone keeps comparing WP7 to Windows Mobile and complaining that it doesn't support the same features. What no one seems to understand is that if Windows Mobile was so perfect it wouldn't have the crap market share it does now. Sure, there are a group of people who love the flexibility and power that WM offers. Heck, I used it for years and years and loved it, defending it against everyone who said it was a piece of crap. In fact, in many ways, it IS a piece of crap. Does it have some pretty nice features? Sure. But the OS itself is old, outdated, slow, etc.

First, many of the features that everyone is complaining about will be coming down the road with a firmware upgrade. But the majority of smartphone owners couldn't care less about tethering or even copy and paste. They care about being able to interact with Facebook and Twitter, get their email and calendar and text messages, play games and run their favorite apps, etc. Microsoft has wisely chosen to address those things right out of the gate and then come back and hit the other things in a future update.

I imagine they'd rather trade the 3% of the market that cares about tethering and copy/paste for part of the 97% that doesn't.
