TiVO service on your DSL bill...
(old news - 12:51PM Thursday Nov 01 2007)

Arkansas-based DSL provider Windstream Communications says they're going to start bundling TiVO service with DSL connections starting next year. While Windstream is exploring getting into the IPTV business, for the moment their triple play consists of bundled Dish Network satellite service. This bundle is aimed at users who don't want to migrate to satellite.

This would appear to be a poor man's ISP's attempt at offering a DBS/DSL service like Homezone. Aside from having TiVO on your Windstream bill, we're not seeing the benefit (above just going out and buying a TiVO) to users. The press release doesn't offer prices yet; hopefully this isn't just a pure marketing play.

Windstream's trying hard to compete with the major operators, and likely doesn't have the funds for any major IPTV expansion. We recently reported that the company offshored a massive chunk of their tech support operations.

windstream to offer tivo

My Windstream dsl connection is limited to 1.5 megs because of the distance limitations of dsl. 1.5 meg works well for general internet surfing but does Windstream think that they could run iptv on only 1.5 meg connections? Why would they offer tivo without a tv channel source? This is a strange combination of services.

Sorry but you clearly don't understand what is happening here and/or didn't RTFA. It says TIVO service, not IPTV. Since when does having a subscription to Tivo get you any TV channels?

This is for people with Windstream phone and DSL who don't want to get rid of their cable TV and switch to Windstream bundled Dish Network. They can get Tivo service billed on their Windstream bill (likely with bundling discounts) and keep their current cable service.

Re: windstream to offer tivo

It says here on the Broadband Reports Windstream story that Windstream is exploring an iptv option. So I thought maybe Windstream was thinking of using Tivo as part of a coming iptv launch. Guess Windstream is going to use Tivo to just offer a video on demand kind of service using dsl to download the Tivo content. Anyways I don't need a Tivo service. I have Insight digital cable service with a two tuner dvr and video on demand. But Tivo has a much better interface than Insight's dvr service.

I'm surprised this company hasn't been gobbled up by AT&T, Verizon or Qwest. A lot of the states it serves have very high population growth rates, in all three of those companies' traditional regional territory.

Uh Windstream's service areas are the areas that SBC (now AT&T) dumped because they didn't want them.... (rural areas largely)
