Windstream Completes Acquisition Of Iowa Telecom
96k broadband users added to the mix...
by Karl Bode Wednesday 02-Jun-2010 tags: business · stats · consumers
Last November Windstream Communications announced that they'd acquired Iowa Telecom in a deal valued at around 1.2 billion. The company this week announced that they've completed the deal -- which adds another 249,000 access lines, 96,000 high-speed Internet customers and 27,500 digital TV customers in Iowa and Minnesota to Windstream's total footprint. Windstream now offers service in roughly 23 states.

Ick..

Good luck. My dsl stinks since D&E was taken over by Windstream. I am looking at switching to cable triple play.

Re: Ick..

I don't see any possible way for service to be worse than what Iowa Telecom had. They can barely provide dial tone much less broadband. Before them GTE was known for crappy service, so it's just more of the same.

Re: Ick..

agreed.

ok now stay with me this may get confusing.

My in-laws have iowa telecom dsl. My cellular company is t-mobile and I have the t-mobile g1 that I tether to while visiting them. Where they live in iowa the cell service is so bad that I have GPRS while roaming on iWireless. I prefer to tether my laptop on that instead of using the wifi going through Iowa Telecom. Even the latency is better most of the time. Its a joke.

Re: Ick..

Ouch , just remember things don't change over night but maybe after a few mouths they will be able to start fixing issues.

My area was an Alltel area when windstream was created but i never really had any issues except for a 2 mouth windows of superscription which they fix with upgrades and kept me informed about the progress tough this site.

Re: Ick..

The biggest issue is all of the old copper underground is in horrible condition from decades of neglect by GTE. I don't see any economical way for them to fix it, especially in such rural areas.

I've been dealing with several business lines for 11 years that always have issues. They fix it, a few weeks later it's back. They literally told me to stop calling in trouble tickets, at which time I informed them that my job is to call in trouble tickets and if they can't fix it, I have to escalate, and have no problems with complaining to the FCC about it. The next day someone high up in management called and said he was bringing in a different crew to look at the issue. They fixed. For about 2 months...

Re: Ick..

If the issues affect dial tone (even just noise on the line) Just call your local Public utilities commission and they will fix it, they can get in trouble if they don't.

Iwireless is an interesting company. They are preparing to launch a 3G network, but only in certain areas. Many of their cell sites are owned by rural telecoms that joined Iwireless in offering service. Therefore many of their sites will never be updated. Iwireless is made up of many different telecoms.

However, they offer the Nexus One and many other Android phones. Plus they have $50 unlimited text, minutes, and data plans (which works with ANY of their phones). Their data is truly unlimited, but not very useful until they launch their 3G network.

Re: Ick..

their 3g phones are t-mobile 3g compatible also. so if they ever come up with a plan that beats t-mobile I will jump at it so long as they won't cancel me for living outside their area.

I feel ya. People don't believe it when I tell them a lot of iWireless sites are still running GPRS (not even EDGE!) I run in to it far too frequently. Even worse, the speed is often better on the GPRS sites because of less congestion! To imagine that WiFi through IT would be WORSE is mind boggling.

Have you tried sending a PM to Windstream See Profile they are normally quicker and easier to dell with then phone support and normally get things solved.

I always thought higher of them than other providers. They offer faster tiers of DSL compared to VZ. If you're stuck with copper, that at least gives you options.

What Changes Can We Expect?

So (as current Iowa Telecom subscribers) what changes can we expect? When?

Re: What Changes Can We Expect?

I don't know, I only have verizon. But, if this sad little village in PA can get 12Mb, let alone dsl to start with, I imagine you'll have some options.
If they had VZ, they'd be royally screwed.
