Windstream Keeps Gobbling Up Smaller Operators
Acquires Q-Comm Corporation for $782 million
by Karl Bode Wednesday 18-Aug-2010 tags: dsl · business · stats · consumers
As the rural telco consolidation trend continues, Windstream continues to quietly grow in the shadow of larger deals, like CenturyLink and Qwest or Frontier and Verizon. Fresh off of putting the finishing touches on their deal to acquire Iowa Telecom, Windstream has announced that they've acquired Q-Comm Corporation in a deal worth around $782 million. Q-Comm is a Kansas-based regional fiber transport company and CLEC, with operations in 22 states. Q-Comm also has two subsidiaries: Kentucky Data Link, a fiber services provider in 22 states, and Norlight, a Midwest competitive local exchange services company. From the release, it looks like a primary motivator for the deal is Windstream's desire to expand their wireless backhaul presence.

This Deal

This deal seemed logical as when Windstream acquired Iowa telecom,
The headquarters used to be in Newton Iowa. Going to KDL's website they have a point of presence in Newton which is coincidentally the former headquarters of Iowa Telecom!
Which means that Iowa telecom must have used them for backhaul support...interesting!

Nice deal for them

KDL has TONS of fiber in the ground, so this will certianly expand their backhaul presence. There are places where even AT&T uses KDL to get in and out the city. For example Paducah KY, because they lost their KDL link during the big 08 and lost phone service for the entire city.

Re: If Only

T isn't up to selling much of their footprint. The areas they they got rid of where virtually nothing compared to VZ sell offs.

T is in the business to keep those areas due to the $$$$$ they get from the USF.
