But is it worth it?

Following the moves of companies such as Qwest and Comcast, Windstream this week has launched a price for life promotion that locks down your monthly rate if you bundle at least two services (bundles start at $49.99). Windstream tells us the deal doesn't require a long-term contract. As we discussed when Qwest launched such a promotion, such deals often aren't worth it to consumers. What seems like a good deal today quite often isn't a good deal down the road, and in many instances customers can get better rates by renegotiating their rates with their carrier. Being civil, but threatening to take your business elsewhere can usually net you more savings than these price for life promotions.

price for life does not stop hidden fees and other forced ad

price for life does not stop hidden fees and other forced add on.

they can add a ipv6 fee at a later time or say you must get a new plan to be on the ipv6 network.

I will probably move from 3 to 6 mbps. Hopefully I won't get jerked around with fees later. So far the service has been stable and they've been friendly to deal with.

While it may sound like a good idea to lock in a "low" price for "life", think about how far and how fast the "service" changes.

Looking back at what I've paid for internet service over the years, I am grateful I am not locked in. A few years ago I was paying $64 a month for a 1500/256 DSL line. And sure, my bill is now $69.99 a month, but my service is 20,000/20,000.

Just wish I could get faster speed from Windstream

Currently stuck at 3/3xx. About 3 miles from me Comcast has 50/5 available. Very disappointing.

Careful what you sign up for

Windstream isn't exactly well known for quality customer service. I don't see how they can offer this without a long-term contract, but if that part is true then kudos in that regard.

Otherwise I'd be very wary of signing up for such a deal because customer service can vary wildly over the course of several months. Imagine being locked to an ISP with terrible customer service that you had no choice but to deal with.

And if heavy inflation kicks in next year due to all the stimulus packages and the wildly burgeoning federal deficit, these could be good deals.

Qwest's price for life . . . or until they forget

Qwest's price for life . . . or until they forget and then tell you never even signed up for life, ask you for proof. You tell them this how I got the free DSL modem, then they tell you you're making it up, etc..

How about a nice old bankruptcy to kill the price for lifers?

Windwhat?

Who are these guys? New?

I always follow the saying that if it's too good to be true, it is. I always look at it from both business and customer side. There is always something behind a deal like this that gives me a bad gut feeling. Nothing with "life" ever seems to be a good deal or idea

Re: Windwhat?

One thing I have to say about Windstream is they have taken the wreckage that was Valor Telecom and turned it into a half-decent service. And they are the *ONLY* company in this area that is actually bringing broadband to the boonies. Sure, it's not the fastest, but the fact you can get DSL now 40 miles away from the city is a VERY WELCOME relief for people who have been stuck on crappy dialup getting 26.4 or 28.8 bps connections....

Re: Windwhat?

don't forget they are also the former Alltel Landline company as well.

Windstream service is very cheap and they do offer a lot.

This ain't your average phone company

"doesn't require a long-term contract."

That right there tells you something. There is no contract.
