According to a press release from Windstream Communications, the phone company has just passed one million broadband customers. According to the company, they've already added 21,000 new broadband customers during the first quarter of this year, surpassing the 18,000 they added last quarter. Windstream was created back in 2006 when it was spun off by Alltel (now part of Verizon Wireless) and merged with Valor Communications. Windstream now offers broadband service to about 88% of its 3 million access lines.

Re: Nice prices!

Starting at? $30 for local telephone - and it's required for internet?

100 minutes? Only 3mbps?
† requires Windstream local phone service

We apparently regard prices differently, or you fellas didn't read what's required

Re: Nice prices!

it says Local phone service. does not say what package you need.

Which means you could get a metered phone service. Which their site is interesting. they claim to service an area in Ohio that is serviced by Fairpoint.

You can get their Winstream DSL with any phone package. Basic plan starts at $5.

The Bundle is $59.99 for local and 3mbps internet.
Phone alone is $34.99 for their local and 100 LD minutes.
Nationwide phone is $49.99.

Re: Nice prices!

i never said anything about "bundling" i said order each seperate.

It allowed me to place an order for $5 per month phone service and the 12megs internet. It didn't say anything about having to bundle anything. You keep looking at the bundles. Not everyone bundles.

I just called Windstream they said you do NOT have to have any bundled plan. The simple basic phone line would be fine. It ranges from $5-12.10 depending on the region. Ohio its $12.10 for the basic line- no features or long distance plans. and then the price of the Internet. Then the taxes.

Before taxes and fees for the 12meg in Ohio is only $43 (change rounded up.)

Going by what is seen on the website itself:

They only show two phone services.
Granted, they may have more services to offer.
Also, again going by the webpage, $34.99 is the local phone service.
When bundled with the 3mbps internet, the price drops to about $30 for phone and $29.99 for internet to end at $59.99.

Even if it is as you say, not that impressive as your first post above states. Sorry!

One other thing... this is DSL, right?
What speeds can people honestly expect?
As with any DSL service, ya might not be within range for the higher speeds...

Re: Nice prices!

of course they want you to spend more money than what you want. that's every business. LoL. I always place an "order" to find out what is required total. I did with them and found out basic phone service was fine. Got curious even more when you posted the bundles so i called. I not only got someone right away, but he also knew what he was talking about and was more than willing to give me the information i wanted.

Re: Nice prices!

i don't live in their service area. I live in AT$T's. But I'm happy with my cable service.

All i did was just click a state and city to get the info on placing an order. They don't require anything else until you go to fully run the order.

you're right, you cannot look for services. Zip code specific areas have different prices. Why would you even comment when it would NEVER affect you?

they do not based prices on zipcode. I could easily pick out the cities in my state that they service and get pricing. I can even call them--which i did.

And how do you know I won't be moving to one of their areas? Never affect me? you don't know that.

@rr.com

you get what you pay for

I had to deal with windstream for 2 years and I can guarantee that their service is reflected in their prices. They are not a competitor to any cable company and they only make them look better. I have had far fewer problem with my cable provider than with windstream and every problem I have is followed by a credit to me account. With windstream all my problem were followed by nothing but a "I know how you feel sir." I just wonder how many of those 1 million will be leaving in a few months if they have an alternative provider available.

Re: you get what you pay for

I have been a Windstream (previously Alltel) customer for decades. Alltel was terrible about credits but since they became Windstream, they offer me the credits.

Now they have a real communication problem between their sales and repair dept. It often takes several calls to get them to fix the simplest problems, like a feature not working. Or putting a phone feature on the wrong line if you have more than one.

But credits, they give freely.

Very few actually. As most of their newest customers are in rural areas not served by any other broad band. This of course cuts two ways, but in general, good.

If I didn't have Windstream, I would not have broadband. Lucky for me when HughesNuts started their new FAP policy, Windstream had just come in the area.

What impresses me about Windstream is ....

... They are deploying DSL to rural areas. And when I say rural areas I don't just mean "Small towns out in the country" but also the area AROUND those towns that have no chance in at&t and other service areas.

Someone I know who is almost an hour outside the city just got DSL for the first time. They are quite a distance from the DSLAM so their speeds from Windstream appear to be 384/384 as far as my tests can tell but considering the best they could get before was dial-up that synced usually at 26.4 kbps it's friggin' amazing.

Not the fastest at that distance--- but the pings are steady and definitely game capable for the first time in that home's existence! Too bad won't be any streaming HD at those speeds however :/

Still I'm impressed by Windstream at this point.

Re: What impresses me about Windstream is ....

they may put out RTs if the demand is there. With Windstream doing what it's doing I could see them easily taking over parts of Charter and running it the way CinciBell is doing with an old Muni-cable provider. Take it and easy way into the TV business in many areas. That would be a TRUE Broadband company.

I guess I meant to say RT instead of DSLAM, as it's not in the CO but in a Cabinet--- well outside of town.

384/384 is nothing to sneeze at, when you're coming from dialup. Put them on a Siecor/Corning splitter (SPS-H50-SR1 or H70) in lieu of the standard filter and you could see a boost of 20-40%.

(At least, I have, on crappy copper at 15000+ cable-feet.)

Exactly, it's damn impressive too especially since they couldn't even get wireless broadband at this location (too far from a Cell tower).

Cool, tell me more... is this a whole house splitter deal that goes in the NID vs those in home filter deals?

Yep, that's what they are. Fairly seasoned/old-school technology, but they do the job on marginal lines. If you're patient and buy in advance of need, they're about $15 on ebay. For the frugal, they can make a $20 DSL circuit perform adequately in lieu of a $38+ cable-modem.

For those that can wire their own homerun before the installer gets there, Windstream will come out and install a NID filter for $40 and hook it to your home run. That is not as cheap but it's good for someone that doesn't want to go the ebay route, etc.

I live in one of those isolated areas. Alltel had the lines here they had an excuse a year about rolling out broadband. Within 6 months of Windstream taking over Alltel's land lines they went from 50% to near 80% penetration of their customers to at least 256k dsl. Which if you live in the middle of nowhere like me, is fine. I am lucky, live close to a rural DSLAM and get 3m.

Customer service = crap

I'm very surprised they are growing. Their customer service is terrible! I tried switching to them last Summer and had nothing but trouble.

First they missed 2 install appointments, then when they did finally install it the connection kept dropping. I ended up finding out they had qualified me for 12Mbps service even though I'm too far out. Called to get downgraded to the next lowest tier and guess what... they missed that appointment as well. Oh, and more than half the time when I called I got their call center in India!

The entire experience was absolutely dumbfounding. I mean here I am trying to become a NEW customer and they just can't get it right. After a week on/off the phone with these bozos I canceled service with them and decided to keep RoadRunner.

Not a fan boy, just keeping things truthful. They no longer use Wipro call center in India. They do farm it out to a call center in South Florida.

Insight to Windstream DSL

When I was in college, I had Insight cable. Let me say, they are by far the best cable company that I have ever had. Their cable speeds are blazing fast. Insight has a 20mb package over Windstream's 12mb one. They also had top notch tech support. If you want a quality ISP, go with them.

After college, I moved to a house without cable ran to it. I ended up going with DSL. Windstream has horrible tech support. Also, I'm stuck with the 3mb package even though I live 8 miles away from Lexington right of Nicholasville road. They haven't upgraded it in the 2 years that I have paid for their services. I wish they would spend more money on upgrading their equipment and infrastructure.

please upgrade

@windstream.net

Re: Insight to Windstream DSL

It would be nice if Windstream would upgrade their dsl service. Windstream needs to make 6 meg and 12 meg dsl available to more of their current customers limited to 3 meg dsl. I wonder how many of those one million dsl customers can really get any speed faster than 3 meg?

You can bet half of those cant get faster speed then 1.5 and they have no other choice for broadband

Re: Insight to Windstream DSL

You go that right. I had them for 2 years and my 3Mbps was alwats round 1 or less. If there had been competition I bet their service would have been better.
