Chicago, NY have their own wireless plans
(old news - 09:19AM Friday Feb 17 2006)
tags: coverage · wireless · municipal
Chicago will be soliciting bids from technology companies to build a citywide Wi-Fi network, reports the Associated Press. City technology guru Chris O'Brien states the system would be paid for by whatever private vendor is chosen to build it. Meanwhile Wi-Fi Planet checks in on a similar quest to unwire NYC, a process that started long before San Francisco and Philly began their plans, says a city official.

Great for Chicago

Do you think that SBC (ATT) will submit a bid to provide the service?

How about Comcast?

Most likely a company like Earthlink that is getting heavily into the citywide WiFi arena. With sub-contractoirs like Tropos to do the wireless hardware.

This is the problem with cities they want you to build it with youu money and they reap the rewards. Some city I forget which one there are so many that we visted said sure use your money for equipment and you can use our light poles BUT you cant use the power from the light poles???? Now that made a lot of sense and all the big wigs were there from AT&T, SBC, Verizon, Comcast etc etc and they all said umm sorry your crazy and everyone I mean everyone walked away not even bidding on the project..

This whole earthlink thing and Motorola together is really going to be a mess especially here in Anahiem we are trying to work with them but it sounds like its going to be RF hell. They plan on putting up 15 AP sites using 900, 5.7,and 5.3 gear they claim the only interference is in 900 well DUUUU the 900mhz stuff is heard all over the place becuase it is NLOS where the other freq's are LOS thats why they are not seeing the noise down on the ground where they are supposedly doing all their site surveys and spectrum analysis.

Those need to also be done on roof top level where they plan on putting their AP's. These motorola people have NO clue and Earthlnk was sold on this idea and are pinching pennies and are going to get egg on the face via Motorola.

The sad thing is their main poo city Hall is less then a block away from our main datacenter where we have 2.4, 5.8, 5.2, 900 gear all the way around and have noise issues on every freq. And theses guys say there is no noise issues they are on crack!
We have already seen the same thing going to happen in philly its not going to work and they are going to screw the spectrum for everyone.

Our goal this next week is to get in front of Earthlink CEO's and voice our opinion for all the wisps in the areas and as a neutral party to try and get this resolved and offer them a better plan then waht motorola has already..

Re: Great for Chicago

Tried the same thing in Miami Beach. They city and the installers do not want to hear about this. they all think they can just put it up and turn the power up (1 watt tropos) and they will have no interference because they will "outpower all other providers". Anyone with RF understanding, especially at low power unlicensed frequencies, understands that noise is already a problem in the metro areas (ours is clogged on 900, 2.4, 5.3 and 5.8) and that adding more power is just more noise for EVERYBODY. You would think the city would hire an RF engineering expert....I guess not.

And what the unsuspecting p[roponents of these networks dont get is that it will not work as intended. Sure Chaska Minn might work, but LA, NY, Miami, Chicago etc will just make current the wisps (including themselves) go out of business becuase of unreliable service.

I feel a big "I told you so" coming very soon for these projects and elected officals behind them.

Who cares..

Just something else for them to tax or another reason for them to raise property taxes.

They should fix their schools and other problems first. Oh wait, I'm sure that's where the money will go, or at least that's what they'll tell everyone.

I hear you there...that's the very reason I left Chicago...

Re: Who cares..

I have been a resident in Chicago most of my life. If you remember, Chicago was one of the last major US cities to deploy cable television. There was so much concern about who would be awarded the contract that the city in its infinite wisdom, decided to break the city up into regions. Three or four companies were awarded contracts and everyone suffered. Chicago had some of the worst cable TV service. I hope they do this right, but our Mayor Daley is more interested in an additional NFL franchise and hosting the Olympics!

I'd much rather have the Olympics than yet another ISP..
