Wireless Again Propels AT&T's Quarterly Earnings
1.9 million new wireless, 231,000 new U-Verse users
It's (already?) earnings time again, and AT&T this morning released their best-ever first quarter results. According to AT&T, the carrier again saw explosive growth on the wireless front, adding 1.9 million wireless subscribers in the first quarter (513,000 of them contract, or postpaid) and activating 2.7 million iPhones -- down from 3.1 million activations the quarter before. AT&T reported first quarter earnings of $2.5 billion on total revenue of $30.6 billion. AT&T traditionally doesn't break out their DSL and landline numbers specifically to mask cable defections, though the carrier says they added 231,000 net U-verse subscribers to reach 2.3 million in service -- and 255,000 net broadband connections overall.

Suspend the Dividend!

Suspend the dividend, dump all profit back into your wireless network. Lather, rinse, repeat for one more quarter.

Laugh as Verizon's jaw hits the floor, and enjoy the cascade of massages from happy shareholders who are re-acquainted with a value stock that builds long term wealth.

Well, it was a nice thought.

Re: Suspend the Dividend!

Isn't it sad that a slightly aggressive business suggestion to build long-term growth is seen as the result of smoking pot?

I'm sure the board of directors and their institutional investor friends feels the same way with their "what have you done for me this quarter the future be damned" way of doing business.

U-Verse Blows

Just had my U-Verse installed yesterday and am sending it back less than 24 hours later. I never though I would miss DirecTv so badly.

While I'm NO fan of anything at&t to say the least, (or SBC for that matter) I have to play devils advocate here.. I know several people that do have the service and swear by it. What do you not like about it so much?

My U-verse experience was: Internet was very good, Phone was very good, TV was good EXCEPT for HD picture quality which was not as good as my Time Warner Cable. So I cancelled the TV service of U-verse and kept TWC. I've been there for two years now and not regretted it a bit.

What happens when you have five or six HD shows to record at once? This happens on a regular basis with me. Even back in 2001 I had 2 or 3 things on concurrently in HD and I could only record two things at once back then.

Sometimes I'm recording 8 or 9 HD programs simultaneously. i couldn't imagine only being limited to a few HD streams. Especially for people with four or five people in a family that all watch separate things in HD every night.

While I wouldn't say it 'never' happens, the 'average' American isn't watching +4 HD TVs 'and' DVR/TiVoing 2 others at the same time - at least not very often.

Even with a house of 4, I 'barely' break past 2 TV's at once. My neighbor had 4 teenagers living at home, and hit 3 + 1 TiVo.

I'm sure that 'some' people have many TV's in their house, and Uverse isn't for them. Most of my TV's are CATV, as those boxes are too expensive, and there's no limit on TV's on TWC.

Who watches everything they record? I don't even watch 50% of what I record but I do want to have many, many options available to me when I sit down to watch TV. I'm not about to waste my time and watch commercials either so I've been time shifting my TV watching since 1984. And time shifting my HD program watching since 2001. So it only takes 40 minutes to watch an hour long program without commercials.

But either way, what I do with my time is my business anyway. If someone wants to go outside they can do it if they want, if not they can do that to. Who are you to dictate what a person should or should not do?

Maybe you should do something instead of being online. Or are you outside lying there while online?

The other problem is I can't use mythtv with u-verse. When you record as much stuff as my house hold does you really need a lot of terrabytes of storage to insure things stay on for a long time not to mention at the rate that HD's die these days I want redundant parity raid to insure I don't lose recordings due to a disk failure (which wouldn't be the case with uverse).

I happily use mythtv with two OTA tuners (HD) and 2 HD satalite tuners and one low def satellite tuner (Dish Network) which allows me to record everything with no re compression and record up to 5 shows at once.

Re: U-Verse Blows

If you could, you would make myself and my neighbor happy. I have TV and Voice. He has it all; TV, Voice, Internet. On the TV side, we get a digitized picture on every recording we make. At least 3-4 times in an hour long show. He has had sound cut out while watching live but when he rewinds and watches the sound is there. The digitizing also happens during a live show but not as frequent. On the Voice side, I have had issues with other callers getting patched into our call. From the home side, I never hear it but the other caller does. I have never experienced it first hand but my wife and several other callers have. I also have issue with dialing beeps from other call interfering with the line. They can be heard by both callers. It is not an issue of someone touching a button. I know this as my wife and I were on corded office phones which don't have buttons in the headset. On the Internet side, my neighbor was needing help making the switch to Apple. We had a difficult time accessing theirs and others web site. My neighbor called and got this fixed. He needed to be on a different DNS server. Although this problem is fixed it concerns me that latency could be more an AT&T issue and not a hosting or backbone issue. And on an equipment note: I dream of better equipment nightly. They are huge and noisy. Navigation is the pits. Several features don't work correctly for me. Such as Favorites. I have to resort to hiding channels which is ok but every time you add more sports channels, which I don't watch, I have to go through a add them to the hidden channels. The show descriptions are always cropped. I also should note that I brought this issue up after 1 week of having the service. The Tech showed me that the diagnostic test showed no issues even though you could see a picture issue. I have tried the online support and it claims there is an issue but never say anything about sending someone or when it will be fixed. I have been told that I live in optimum distance from the node. Not too close or too far but right in the middle of the service area.

Re: Exodus continues

"1.9 million net gain in total wireless subscribers"

And most likely at a higher ARPU than with wireline, so T is doing ok in that respect.
