Wireless Broadband Use Surges 154% Still only accounts for 1% of online U.S. Internet use... According to ComScore, wireless broadband use soared 154% last year. "Though mobile broadband access is currently used by about 1 percent of the total U.S. Internet population it is poised for significant growth over the next few years," said Serge Matta, senior vice president of comScore. "As consumers increasingly demand and depend on portable Internet access, the demand for mobile broadband should continue to increase." According to the group, 59% of mobile broadband use is work related. The study also found, not too surprisingly, expensive 3G services aren't for the cash strapped. Comscore says that people making at least $100,000 were 37 percent more likely than average to use mobile broadband -- and those with incomes below $25,000 were 41 percent less likely.

| Wireless- the hope for rural residents. Wireless is pretty much the only hope rural residents have at getting decent broadband Internet. So I'm hoping the technology continues expanding out to the boonies and there is greater competition in all areas (besides being stuck with only one choice for a wireless provider.) | |
| | | Works great for me Wireless BB is the only option i have, currently with millenicom which is a reseller of sprint evdo rev A. got me out of the dial-up stone age. | |
| Jerm join:2000-04-10 Richland, WA kudos:2 | well hmm... At the current price of what, $50-$80/month for wireless mobile broadband - of course it's a low uptake rate!
But those stats don't track people like ME who got smart and use PDANET to tether my phone's EVDO data to my laptop with NO extra charges
Sprint SERO @ $30/month gives me 500mins talk time with unlimited text, pictures, and data. With PDANET that means I get 500-700kbps internet to my laptop pretty much everywhere!
Smart ppl FTW! | |

| How about this? Have you guys heard about WMWiFIRout?
Basically it allows you to turn your EvDO & WiFI equipped WinMobile phone into a wireless router.
I just downloaded the program this morning, and started to test it.
Here are the comparings: BT Tether:

WMWiFiRout:

That's 4X as much juice over WiFi.
All I'm playing is 15 bucks a month for all I can eat EVDO. You can't beat that.

| Very Low Caps I bet it's the very low caps that are keeping people from wanting to use this.
VZW and AT&T both have 5GB monthly caps, and still charge $60/mo.
I don't know what AT&T does if you go over 5GB, but VZW charges $.49/MB, so if you download an additional 1GB that'd cost $501.76 extra.
Right now, Sprint's the only choice that makes any sense, since they don't have caps. T-Mobile doesn't appear to have caps either, although they only have EDGE at the moment.
I don't know about Alltel.
What I do know, is that with a 5GB monthly cap, I wouldn't buy the service, even if it cost only $20/mo.

| Re: Very Low Caps Sadly, VZW's the only wireless provider out where I live where I can at least get 1XRTT through their NationalAccess while Alltel and T-mobile have coverage just down the road from me.
The only thing that makes VZW worthwhile at the moment is that they have greater coverage areas in New York state than the other major wireless providers. It doesn't help any better that they cap you and restrict you in what you can do with their network (no online gaming, no video streaming, no P2P).
