Is everyone ready for the big game?
(old news - 03:05PM Saturday Feb 03 2007)
tags: fun · wireless
The wireless networks have been preparing for months to make sure that they have enough coverage ability to adequately meet the needs of customers during the big event. Cingular / AT&T is reported to have been preparing for the last six months and is “using its entire South Florida 70 megahertz spectrum in Dolphin Stadium and the surrounding areas, where the company anticipates a spike in network traffic” to accommodate the increased activity. Likewise, journalists in Indiana report that Verizon “is taking steps to insure that Indianapolis Colts' fans will be able to send videos of the crowd, photos and text messages from the Super Bowl. The company will have two Cells on Light Trucks or COLTs outside Dolphin Stadium to handle the expected increase in call volume.” And in similar news, with a twist, Sprint Wireless has been working for a year on a wireless recycling program which will culminate at the Super Bowl.

Actually its the second biggest sporting event behind the world cup and it generates much interest. But thanks for your comment.

2nd biggest? I doubt it. The tv networks here pretend that most of the country watches it, but nope.

First let's see the proof for that idiotic "2nd biggest event"... tells volumes if you really believe it.

BTW, who gives a damn about soccer? It's soo slow and low scoring. Gah. I used to play a sweeper and I still hate watching the game. It's akin to golf. Slow and boring.

Call me when the world decides to field a real FOOTBALL team.

We are going so off topic here but I will address both your points in this post.

I Love Football and I understand that games are more fun in the crappy weather. I live on a mountain in North PA and I can ensure you that NO ONE especially a 48 yr old is playing Football outside right now.

As for Real Football (Soccer) its an argument I have heard a milion times. Its too slow and not much scoring. I have watched thousands of soccer games in my life, some have been crap...others the most exciting things ever. I have watched many NFL games that had high scores but were terrible. I love a great defensive match up.

And Yes I am an alien...I have a green card

You and me both, I have tried to enjoy soccer but it is just too slow for my likes. I like watching football from time to time but I prefer basketball overall for the fast pace of the game. Keeps it interesting.

Well have fun doing it then. However at my age I have no intention of going outside and rolling around in the snow.

And of course as you have no idea who I am and what I do for exercise then I suggest you keep your personal remarks to yourself.

Accepted.

Here is our current weather alert. Have Fun with your game.

THE WIND CHILL ADVISORY IS NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 AM EST TUESDAY.

THE COLDEST AIR OF THE SEASON IS FILTERING INTO THE STATE AND
WILL CONTINUE WELL INTO THE NEW WORK WEEK. THE COMBINATION OF LOW
TEMPERATURES WITHIN A FEW DEGREES OF ZERO...AND A GUSTY WIND OUT
OF THE WEST WILL CAUSE WIND CHILL READINGS TO AVERAGE 15 TO 20
DEGREES BELOW ZERO.

THESE COLD WIND CHILL READINGS WILL LAST THROUGH TUESDAY. DURING
THE HOURS AROUND SUNRISE ON BOTH MONDAY AND TUESDAY MORNINGS...THE
WIND CHILLS MAY EVEN APPROACH 25 DEGREES BELOW ZERO. IF THIS
LOOKS MORE CERTAIN...A WIND CHILL WARNING MAY BE ISSUED.

A WIND CHILL ADVISORY MEANS THAT VERY COLD AIR AND STRONG WINDS
WILL COMBINE TO GENERATE LOW WIND CHILLS. THIS WILL RESULT IN
FROST BITE AND LEAD TO HYPOTHERMIA IF PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT TAKEN.
IF YOU MUST VENTURE OUTDOORS...MAKE SURE TO DRESS IN LAYERS AND
WEAR A HAT AND GLOVES.

That's 99% of cell conversations any way. It doesn't really matter on the venue.

Damn: I long for the days when cell phones were expensive enough that you needed something approaching a real reason for having one. Now, you get to hear somebody's cute little ringtones and the lovely "where you at" types of conversations. :P

most likely that will apply for reproduction of another station's transmissions. As for broadcasting I seriously doubt someone will bring a laptop only to have it jacked. Of course you will stand out with a sore thumb as well.

Frankly I don't think this rule applies but it does on certain ways scratch the surface a bit.

Generally, those rules only apply to money-making ventures (e.g., sports bars showing games to bring in customers. If you're not making money for them to want a piece of, they're generally going to not care.

Wretched excess

See »www.walb.com/Global/story.asp?S=···nav=5kZQ for a related news article on showing the "big game".

Although it's a popular social event, I consider it wretched excess and a painfully dragged-out event with babbling ex-jocks puking out their half-assed opinions and observations using horribly contrived cliches.

Add to that the gaudy and distracting video inserts and "whoosh" sound effects of the "zoom-ins" every few seconds and the overwhelming number of interruptions, and it becomes boring and tedious at best, an insult to the intelligence at worst.

I plan to go for a short winter hike with my camera this afternoon, then pull out a DVD to watch this evening.

Prince and the NFL will just have to go on without me

No, "soccer" is a football game. The NFL is just sanctioned violence (quite a few are felons are have been indicted).

If you think "soccer" is a sport in Europe, go to a Manchester United game and root for Spain.

The fact that races aren't a once a year event generally means a lot less cell activity at them. Most venues have two races per year, so it's not a rare event that people want "kodak moments" of, while the superbowl tends to be a once in a life time event for a person and a lot of them want to share that event with everyone they know at that moment.

A man had 50 yard line tickets at the Super Bowl. As he sits down, another man comes down and asks if anyone is sitting in the seat next to him.

"No," he says, "The seat is empty."

"This is incredible!" said the man. "Who in their right mind would have a seat like this for the Super Bowl and not use it?"

The first man says, "Well, actually, the seat belongs to me. I was supposed to come with my wife, but she passed away. This is the first Super Bowl we haven't been to together since we got married in 1987."

"Oh . . . I'm sorry to hear that. That's terrible. But couldn't you find someone else - - a friend or relative, or even a neighbor to take the seat?"

The man shakes his head. "No, they're all at the funeral."
