$50,000 to set up micro-sites for health and social service organizations
(old news - 01:04PM Saturday Mar 15 2008)
tags: business · wireless · municipal
Philadelphia has been persistent in trying to make sure that their dream of a citywide wireless network will be achieved despite the delays caused by problems with Earthlink. A step forward has been made towards that goal since Wireless Philadelphia has just been awarded its first National Foundation Grant. The goal of Wireless Philadelphia is to use citywide wireless to bridge the digital divide. The $50,000 grant will be used to set up micro-sites for six different health and social service agencies in the city. This is designed to create a way to use the Internet to provide information to populations in need. This is a drop in the bucket when it comes to bridging the digital divide but it’s a start.

Wow - $50,000 for 6 web pages on an existing web site ....

... yeah, that will really bridge the digital divide.

The microsites will target six populations, including prenatal and postpartum women, behavioral health patients, youth “aging out” of foster care, and ex-offenders reentering the community. Each microsite will have a unique URL and will also reside on the PhillyHealthInfo.org site.
I like how the use of the term microsite is used to describe nothing more than a few web pages at an existing web site:

Anybody want to earn $50,000 to set up 6 web pages? Apply at The College of Physicians of Philadelphia.

What a Pile of BS!!!

What amazes me is that ANYBODY still believes that Wireless Philadelphia will be a success.

Most people in the city aren't even aware of it. Plus, the 80% coverage rate is a FARCE. Coverage isn't defined by shaded areas on a map; coverage means REAL USERS who can actually access the system within a defined area.

Yet curiously, broadbandreports.com consistently posts articles trumping up Wireless Philadelphia as if it's some emerging success story.

Wireless Philadelphia is on life support. The only "success" it created was for a few connected contractors and consultants who had friends in city government.

Wireless Philadelphia Bridges Digital Divide With New Grant

This is what happens when government, particularly Philadelphia government gets into an industry which is too advanced for their little minds to comprehend.
