XOHM Online In Additional Launch Markets
Though technically not yet commercially available...
by Karl Bode Monday 06-Oct-2008 tags: business · wireless · alternatives · Sprint Mobile Broadband
While Sprint's new XOHM mobile WiMax is officially only commercially available in Baltimore, reports suggest that looming launch market networks (Chicago, Boston, Dallas, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Northern Virginia) are now live, though only in a testing capacity and not technically taking customers yet. DC and Chicago are supposed to be the next markets that come online, with the remainder scheduled to go live before the end of the year. On Wednesday, Sprint plans a marketing extravaganza in Baltimore officially heralding the new service's arrival.

XOHM should launch service in Central Florida

XOHM should launch service in markets where there are customers that cannot get broadband service because they are not served by Cable and do not have DSL Service available in their area.

As much as people want it to be that way, including myself, it would NEVER work. They have to make some money back somehow in order to support the service. Deploying in rural areas with low pop. density would not allow for that. I'm sure over time rural areas will see coverage, like with EVDO (i'm posting this out in the boonies on Sprint EVDO).

How fast is WiMax?

Re: How fast?

2-4Mbps down, 1-2Mbps up -- faster if you're close to a tower.

Results are now appearing on dslreports archive. Unfortunately it's mixed with EVDO results.

Some are getting over 6Mbps on Xohm.

We have officially launched in four locations

We have officially launched in 4 locations in the Baltimore area and many events ahead in the next months... Check services and speeds at Arundel Mill, Harbor Galleria, Columbia and Marley Stations... Services have been very impressive...

You can email me at xohm1@comcast.net

other counties

@comcast.net

Re: We have officially launched in four locations

IT is exciting to see XOHM in my home state.
You say its available in Anne Arundel and Howard Counties?

How about Harford County .... site says no. It is the county east of Baltimore County.

Ive been using Verizon EVDO driving around listening to Internet Radio for two yrs with not many issues; in and out of the state of MD.

Im excited for a faster and cheaper similar service. Hopefully Sprint can deliver, but its not compatible with my phone (Treo 700w). Do you plan on creating open source handsets that connect to XOHM, where users can install whatever app and use VOIP plan of their choosing?

Where can I find out about this
"Wednesday, Sprint plans a marketing extravaganza in Baltimore" thing? What's extravagant about it?
I'm interested but the coverage map shows it's not down here in south AA county yet. Cool it's up GB way though.

Re: We have officially launched in four locations

Assuming these are both the same things (the site says "Bond Street Wharf Park" and XOHMGUY says "Harbor Galleria Mall at Inner Harbor" - at least they're both at the I.H.), tomorrow from 10am to 1pm, not gonna work for me in the middle of the work day. But will see how well it's 'webcast':

Thanks for the replies. Now bring that service down the Rt.2 corridor!

Finally!

So finally WiMax is here even though it has been 'just around the corner' for like the last 3 years.

Way to go Sprint! With LTE still at least 3-5 years away I have no doubt this will be a huge success!

4ginfo.com reported this last week

You can actually get connected today in these cities by registering the device with a Baltimore address and later changing to local address in my.xohm.com. Many have already done it. But don't expect customer support and beware that the since the network isn't 'officially' available, some sites may go up and down for testing.

Still don't understand XOHM..

I'm I the only one here that doesn't understand this new service?

Any videos I can watch via YouTube or something? I don't see how they plan to market something that geeks would only understand..

Re: Still don't understand XOHM..

People will be buying products that happen to have WiMAX in 2-3 years and not even know it. They buy a laptop, a hotspot appears and they make think it's WiFi. Gotta have the network in place first. The benefits won't be fully realized until many are buying a WiMAX product w/out knowing it.

Kindle is a good example. Hardly anyone knows it's the Sprint network behind it. When someone buys a Canon camera that happens to have WiMAX, they'll have no idea what network they're using, just that it's a wireless service.

And Sprint != WiMAX. There are many players getting involved in the US in smaller markets. Sprint/Clearwire operates at 2.5Ghz but there is other spectrum that existing WiMAX devices work in that other players can get into (and that is happening).

WiMAX is about to take off in Asia. Even if the US didn't puruse WiMAX, it will probably be successful in Asia and will spur many products - over 100 will be out by end of the year and over 1000 planned for end of next year. Sprint/Clearwire and small US players will benefit from a large ecosystem of devices that will develop elsewhere.

An early review suggested XOHM registration currently reguires XOHM connection manager SW and input of the device's MAC address? Is that correct or incorrect?

Yes, it's one way to sign up, but may not be the only way.

The review implied it is currently the only way. Do you know of any other way that is currently available?

Re: Still don't understand XOHM..

Not currently. There will apparently be many models to sign up a device when a broader range of products come out. Kindle is an example. You sign up with them, not Sprint.

What exactly is hard to understand about it? It's a wireless internet service with no contract.

Today that is. The long term vision is about a wide array of devices, not just laptops and phones. WiMAX will be in GPS devices, MP3 players (probably iPod touch someday), cameras, refrigerators, pretty much anything that could benefit from being on the net.

Re: Still don't understand XOHM..

And tomorrow it will still be a wireless internet service.

Mass integration is a whole other venture that we'll hopefully see, but not for a while, or at least until coverage has grown substantially. I think that's only going to benefit Intel as long as Sprint can handle the bandwidth demands that will go along with having a Xohm capable chipset in every handheld device. Sounds like they should be ok for a while on backhaul.

I thought I read awhile back on here that its more than just a internet service..something like it will provide better coverage on your Sprint cell phone or something.

Er, no. Ricochet was an overpriced slow-as-snails mobile data solution. Xohm has the benefit of WiMax and the pocketbooks of Sprint et al. behind it. Don't compare a duck with a golden goose

Wifi vs WiMax

@comcast.net
So if you are familiar with connecting your laptop wirelessly within your house or to your neighbors wireless connection or to your local coffee shop's connection ... you note that these are not portable services.

With WiMax you can be on the Internet wireless anywhere, just like cell phone service and WiMax is as fast as the connection you have at home.

Re: Still don't understand XOHM..

Unfortunately, given Sprint's tendency to be distracted by new sparkly things and their uncanny ability to walk away from anything new they attempt (see ION and Sprint Broadband Direct for examples), I doubt XOHM will see its third birthday.

They've gotten wise...

Looks like Sprint has gotten wise to this work-around of entering a Baltimore address. I'm in Washington DC area and have decent XOHM coverage but cannot get connected. I have my account activated and all but am jailed inside the XOHM.com domain.
