Xbox 360 For U-Verse Looms
Support database suggests service support finally coming
by Karl Bode Wednesday 08-Sep-2010 tags: business · alternatives · bandwidth · TVIP
For several years AT&T and Microsoft have hinted at the ability to use an Xbox 360 as your IPTV set top, but the offering never seems to materialize. That may be changing soon, according to a tipster writing to Engadget, who notes that Xbox 360 support references have popped up in AT&T's U-Verse support database. According to the tipster, 360 IPTV functionality is being tested internally with friends and family of AT&T employees, and is "likely only a couple of months away at this point." Last month Canadian telco Telus announced 360 support for their IPTV service, though it required a personal tech visit, and that users already own an HD-DVR.

Meh no thanks

No interest really. I do not ever wish to subscribe, or pay money to ATT in any manner, ever.

$60/yr...

under the guise of "additional services and content"...

Hey Kids, get off the 360 so Mom and I can watch some Dexter. Now!

I'm sure you'll have to be a gold member AND pay AT&T a monthly fee for the privelege so it'll be more than $60 a year...

Re: $60/yr...

you will have to pay ATT. You'll still be getting the service from them. The only thing the 360 is going to do is get rid of the STB by using that.

Re: $60/yr...

I meant you'll still most likely have to pay a monthly STB fee for the privelege of turning something you already own into a STB. And pay Microsoft for the privelege to use the box you own via a Gold membership. I'd pass if U-Verse were available here, which it's not.

Live

Knowing Microsoft, it will require an Xbox Live Gold membership.

I don't care about that. I already pay for Gold Membership. I don't want to pay an extra $7 a month STB charge.

They better not charge a fee for this.

Agreed. If they have similar tv offerings I would give them at least a trial shot to see how it works out...

Considering you still are required to pay for a Netflix and Hulu Plus suscriptions on top of your XBL Gold fee tells me there will be. Unless you're an online gamer XBL gold is a rip off.

Re: Live

chances are you'll just pay for the ATT U-Verse charge. NetFlix collects that $$$ and so does Hulu. You really think you're gonna get free IPTV from ATT?

I do netflix, I don't do hulu. But if I could get teevee programming close to what I get now and save money and lose the box rental fees then I would serioiusly consider it...

well...

if U-Verse was available here, I would hop on, ONLY if you could use the 360 as a DVR... No DVR feature? I would pass.

Netflix and U-verse on one device

Sounds like a good move as long as the STB fee doesn't apply. AT&T needs features like this to have some competitive advantages. The interesting thing is there will be Netflix and U-verse on one device.

I'd want to do this on the newer version of the console though since the original 360 drones like a jet engine.

I don't get it...

So is this planned for people that don't have or can't get U-Verse service in their area? All you need is good internet connnection and a xbox and wa-la?

If this is just a facny set top box for existing U-Verse customers... FAIL... Who cares....

looms? How about finally arrives in style?

Why is everyone so negative about this? If you don't want to use it b/c you don't want to pay or you don't think it will work, then don't use it. I think this concept is great and would pay a monthly fee if it meant I could get rid of an stb, get more out of my xbox360s and use my UVerse dvr as an HD tuner with my media center pc.

This is an optional feature that gives you more functionality out of a hardware device that you likely already own. Win!
