Microsoft tries to bridge PC, console gamers...
(old news - 01:53PM Monday Apr 09 2007)

A blog from the guys over at Mercury News tells us that on May 7th an update will be released containing an Xbox 360 version of Windows Live Messenger, along with added support for more USB keyboards to better use this feature. Microsoft is also releasing a keyboard peripheral for their standard controller, notes Gizmodo. This is in addition to Microsoft's new push to allow PC gamers and console gamers to play online together (an industry first) via broadband connections and a unified matchmaking service.

No bots

One thing I hope doesn't get carried over is the use of bots. I mean the legitimate type of bots that are used to fill game spaces.

If you remember Star Wars: Battlefront on the PS2 had the ability to connect to the PC hosts and play them. Well it took forever to find servers sometimes that had bots turned off.

I'm not sure if I am making sense here, but it makes sense to me

Re: No bots

I hope not. I doubt that MS will allow bots as MS runs the LIVE servers.
And this update just makes it more cluttered. I'd rather have the feature to chat as a group (all friends talking or queuing).
The controller looks like a cheap render. I would not want this.
A bluetooth keyboard, I can deal with.

Why does this seem like the evolution to a console is devolving back to a screen, CPU and mouse/keyboard?

I want cartridges back!!!

It's over...

Finally I can destroy at Halo 2 with my keyboard/mouse. This was the only thing holding me back from buying a 360. I grew up on console but then Doom II, Quake, Counter-Strike, etc... lost my touch. In my opinion, console gamers will be at a HUGE disadvantage against us keyboard/mouse guys.

This is what I'm worring about too. I'm an avid Rainbow Six: Vegas player, and I'm already having a tough time being some of the elite-ranked players on that game. I can hold my own, but I'm clearly not in the top 25% yet.

That being said, once they introduce the keyboard, etc. it's the end of the road.

Re: It's over...

I'm a PC gamer who tried to be cheap and buy an Xbox 360 instead of upgrading my PC. I tried playing GRAW 2 online but I was getting owned. I just sold the console and game but if they had a mouse and keyboard setup, I would have stayed.

You are not going to be happy with the offical keyboard being offered. It is the size of normal controller with the space between the "horns" filled in with a keyboard with really small keys.

I am not sure if they will ever support a mouse as well.

I'm sure any USB keyboard should work so you don't have to settle for the awkward "official" offering.

Dunno why the the decision to NOT have mouse support in most xbox360 games. You would think that feature would draw HUGE numbers of additional gamers to buy the 360 instead of settling for a typically underpowered pc.

Give us a real update.

Just drop the keyboard, we have a microphone. Why not just have free VOIP calls within gold members.

The keyboard is the most outdated part of any computer.

I don't need IMs for xbox 360, what we need is 100% compatibility of old xbox games to run on xbox 360.

You can chat with any GOLD Member on your Friend list or that you have recently played. What exactly are you looking for here. Placing the call on your 360?

Exactly my point.Their is no reason to have IM's on box 360. Give us a real update like 100% compatibly of original xbox games.

Re: Give us a real update.

Give them time on the games compatibility. IM's are there the same way they are there on your PC. Just another form of communication. People on their computers can talk to 360 users and so on. Sure it seems like a luxury, but keep in mind these extras come up all the time on devices only to become commonplace.

Just look at text messaging on cell phones. Just a couple years ago that was considering corny. Now kids are getting grounded from their phones because of excessive texting.

Actually, I think group voice chat would be a better way to go. Something along the lines of a TeamSpeak/Ventrilo concept. Now that would be a comm update worth having...

Not an industry first

Actually IIRC, the Dreamcast had a game which allowed Dreamcast users to play against PC users online. Some kind of racing game. However, this was via dialup on the Dreamcast not broadband.

That game was 4X4 Evo, I played on my DC vs folks on the PC all the time. It was actually a real dial-up friendly game.

Control the cheaters

PC gaming is wrought with cheaters and even on Live it's a problem though not nearly as bad.

My concern is opening the door for rampant cheating on Live. I don't PC game that much anymore because of the cheating and/or having to run so much punkbuster type crap it wasn't worth the effort.

Re: Control the cheaters

If you played xbox live you would understand how incrediably hard it is to cheat. Case and point it scans your xbox when you sign on checking for 3rd party hardware and software hacks and instantly bans you if they detect it. This is why I really enojoyed xbox live.

Yep. I was heavily into gaming a while back - but the jerks using patches or hacks on the game I was playing ruined it for everyone. Even the company running the servers gave up. I was even accused of being a cheater -- but I was just good. People couldn't beat me without using a hack. This was on the 3D PC version of BattleZone. I just got myself a 360, but I only have a couple of games. Not sure I want to get online with it because I know it's just a matter of time before people ruin it. I'll just be happy playing with an opponent sitting next to me or against the computer.

...halfway kidding...

It'd be nice if you could use a keyboard, but why not just make a special board that had just the needed keys? Why use a full size keyboard just to game instead of a specific device that was meant to game with? ...I saw a special 'gamer' keyboard awhile back, but can't remember the brand...

That's the piece I'm more interested in. I wonder if they will, or ever will, include xvid support.

I sure would be a very happy camper if I could pull other file contents off of my media server without resorting to on the fly transcoding tricks.

QWERTY only?

Just out of curiosity does the Xbox360 support alternative keyboard layouts such as Dvorak? I personally use this layout and the hard-wired dvorak keyboards are pricy so it is much simpler to software map the proper keys (Linux, Mac, and Windows all support this natively)

Re: QWERTY only?

Considering 99% of the computer using public uses QWERTY and Dvorak never caught on I don't think it will be too likely that Microsoft will do any of this development on their own. Maybe someone will make a hack.

I know Dvorak typists who say it's a superior technique to QWERTY... much more intuitive and natural. Then again Betamax was a much higher quality video cassette than VHS. Sometimes better doesn't end up the standard.

first off not sure where you got that statistic from, but yes in the US it is predominantly QWERTY.

BUT: in other countries QWERTZ and AZERTY are just as common. It is not difficult to imagine support for these layouts being added, and then why not add in dvorak as well? If the infrastructure is there for other layouts, and we know microsoft already has this done in their Windows product, it is a simple matter.

Re: QWERTY only?

Simplicity and actual execution are two different things. I'm just saying it's unlikely that Microsoft will take the time to implement this on a gaming console unless there is enough demand for it. I just don't see that happening.

Don't get me wrong. I would love not to be correct on this and a future update does give that kind of customizability. I just don't think it will.

I laugh, you all forgot probably the most important part of the update, support is being added for XviD, and H.264 playback in this update:

said by »www.xbox.com/en-US/community/new···8-im.htm :

# H.264 video support: Up to 15 Mbps, Baseline, Main, and High (up to level 4.1) Profiles with 2 channel AAC LC and Main Profiles.
# Added MPEG-4 Part 2 video support: Up to 8 Mbps, Simple Profile with 2 channel AAC LC and Main Profiles.
All hail the downloaded video fest that awaits!

It's all fruitless speculation until the update is in our hands. The Microsoft page is vague in and of itself, but MPEG-4 support for anything is a step in the right direction.

I agree, I guess we'll find out May 7th. Hopefully Major Nelson will clear the issue up before then.

Lately I've been so busy that my XBOX 360 has been a glorified DVD player. I like to play games, but the HT role that I see the 360 capable of doing, if allowed, is the real reason I bought one...

Eh? You add HD, disk space, WiFi, and HDMI and you are getting about the same price for both (maybe even a price lead with the PS3). BTW USB keyboards were usable on the PS3 since it's inception. Funny that the 360 fanboys actually criticized Sony having such a feature.

if PS3 had a support for full-size keyboard in all games, I would jump for it. Customization is all I need.

The PS3 supports almost all USB keyboards and most any bluetooth keyboard and mouse. It also includes voice and video chatting. They have made acess to the keyboard and mouse to developers and it will be used to control the game in Unreal Tournament 2007

Re: What about a browser

actually, i have used the xna development kit and enabling keyboard support for a 360 is just simply a mouse click away for developers. although it is there choice to implament it. the 360 has had keyboard support since the start for typing messages in the xbox dashboard. also final fantasy had keyboard support.

I think in the end developers fill that most people would rather play with a controller because it is a more appropriate impute device for a game being played on a couch.

As for the games that do support PC vs. Console. every one i have read up on the developer have stated that they had made tweaks so that keyboard and controller users would be on a level playing field.
