Service tops Amazon unbox, other download services
(old news - 05:38PM Friday Dec 22 2006)
tags: Video · competition · business · content
A while back we mentioned how the new Xbox360 video service annoys cable providers who aren't thrilled with competing video content delivered over their own pipes (see pricing and details). It also probably has the attention of companies like Apple, who'll be attacking the living room video space next year with the launch of their iTV bridge. According to Variety (via Techdirt), the 360 video service is doing rather well -- better than Amazon's Unbox and several other broadband services. The article also notes how HD titles are selling better than their SD counterparts, despite taking longer to download and costing a dollar more.

What did we expect?

For once, Microsoft rolls out a new product to fill a big gap in available services: direct to the TV High-Definition on demand movie rentals.

Could Microsoft have its hands on the next iTunes-like store, but for movies and high definition video?

Unveil a 120 GB HD, Microsoft, and you might just have it.

Re: What did we expect?

Yeah but $6 for an HD-Lite movie IMO is excessive given that Netflix and other online rental services (eg Blockbuster) don't charge extra for HD-DVD and Blu-Ray rentals. Of course you need a new $200+ HD-DVD or $500+ Blu-Ray player but those prices will come down.

Re: What did we expect?

It's the convenience of being able to be both:
•Instantly Gratified
-and-
•Not have to get up or do anything

Plus, I think the Xbox 360 probably has more market penetration than any HD Optical players right now. Sure, they'll definitely catch-on the same way DVDs did, but the download service is certainly a nice stepping stone.

Re: What did we expect?

It's not instant when you have to download it Vongo style.

It should be very simple for cable and telcos to stop whining long enough to beat a $6 HD-Lite copy of Poseidon.

Which will break after a month's worth of BluRay movie watching.

Did you so quickly forget how awful the PS2 was as a DVD player?

Re: What did we expect?

My PS3 works just fine...so far. If it breaks, I still have the forced upon me 1 year EBGames warranty LOL.

In all honesty, while the controller is a bit of a pain in the ass, I understand that a new DVD BT remote is due for release.

LOL, no kidding. EBGames after last weeks online presales of PS3's for 1/1/07 delivery just put the listing back up for 1/19/07 delivery so maybe I'd only be without for a month or two.

ok they might not be the best quality though i hear they have some HD titles and the HDD is small(but i hear its an SATA 2.5in laptop drive and can be upgraded) the big thing MS has with this is that they have an installed base of HD ready devices that are(gasp) hooked up to possibly HDTVs. so an Xbox download doesnt have to be burned to a DVD-R that may or may not work on your DVD player or sent via some hackjob DVI to Component interface.

Now the real net neutrality debate should start

The Xbox360 delivers the goods in one easy to use unit, and it's already at home on the big screen, HD sets so this is no surprise. The real question is what the cable companies will do to those who are downloading HD movies every single day.

Should be interesting to watch, both on and off TV.

Re: Now the real net neutrality debate should start

Enforce their AUP and risk losing subscribers...or put out more anti-net-neutrality commercials like the ones Cox runs 10 times a day.

Cable and telco subscribers are already paying for the content delivery and now the cable and telcos want to double charge for it.

It wouldn't dawn on them to come up with a compelling product of their own, like more VOD HD content. They would rather have everyone else do the work and then charge them for it.

so many people will be hitting their invisible unlimited caps with this. MS should throw its 800lb Gorilla into the pro net-neutrality corner as the MS Gorilla comes with more money then the telcos and cable cos.

Why did you post such a silly thing? Is it an attention grab for you?

Bill Gates has nothing to do with this except that he is associated with Microsoft.

His INVESTORS want more money. And I hope they make a ton of it. Bill Gates gives more money away each hour than you will make your whole career. I doubt that pushing movies thru XBox was some secret plan to make Gates richer or get more tax writeoffs.

He will get out of day to day running MS in June 2008( »www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/···x991.htm ), but he still is the largest stockholder and makes more money from MS stock appreciation and dividends than anyone else.

He has disposed of some of his stock, but he still holds 937,499,336 shares as of 11/16/2006 And at today's closing price that comes to $27,787,480,319(or approx $27.8 billion), and that doesn't include his wife's shares(1. In addition, there are 425,066 shares owned by reporting person's spouse.)

In addition, Gates and his wife's Foundation, which they control, has $29 billion which includes more Microsoft shares.

BG still sits in the BIG Chair. When you own a large portion of a company such as Microsoft, then you ARE the Man. Regardless of how active he is in its everyday activites.

Futher, he gives a BIG FLYING DUCK what happens to Microsoft and its future.

Tivo, yaaa hear?

Tivo, this is your time to shine! You are in the same boat at Microsoft. Millions of subscribers have your Tivo box connected to their TV, yes not all are HDTV, but the ability to order + download + and watch the movie directly off my tivo with one click makes it all very very delicious.

Download time

It will take just as long to download the movie than it would to drive to a store to rent it. The HD movies are like 6-7gb. That would take a long time for some connections. I have a 10mb connection so it won't take too long.

And yet it's doing rather well. 6-7GB on a 10mb line.. 5hrs? 6hrs?

Re: Download time

The service is nice, but the content is pretty... meh.. I've only downloaded one movie since this service started (and I got it for free btw). They need to have a ton more movies, and if not, they need to update the selection more frequently than they are now. Their TV show selection is pretty decent, but other than that the service overall is mediocre IMO. I am optomistic that it will get better though, it has to.

Route with the Least Resistance

I said awhile ago that consumers always take the path of least resistance(laziness) for their entertainment.

Here is a perfect example of it, the 360 is already a HD device connected to the TV as Doc said, why fight a Blue Ray, HD Battle when you can go direct download right from your home.

Someone said they are only hampered by the small harddrive. And they couldnt be more correct.

I agree. This is how I got into usenet.

No taking a bus to blockbuster, and a bus home anymore, only to find out they have none of the movies I was interested in. I can check imdb links as I surf, and the copy I grab won't even be scratched beyond repair! Anyone who hasn't had this happen at least five times in the past few years doesn't rent a lot.

If this could be made without DRM, without stupid amounts of compression using a commercial codec that is worse than x264/mpeg2, I'll rebuy my whole damn collection - honest. Even with upconversion, DVDs suck on a large 1080p TV. But, will it? No way in hell.
