Sprint should announce prices on September 26
(old news - 11:03AM Thursday Sep 18 2008)
tags: competition · business · wireless · alternatives · Sprint Mobile Broadband
A tipster tells us that Sprint's mobile WiMax Xohm service should be launched in the Baltimore market on October 6. Xohm sales kiosks for the new service should show up that day in the Columbia, Arundel Mills, Harbor Galleria and Marley Station malls. The tipster says that the real introductory date will be September 26 (next Friday). That will be the date of the real fireworks, so that Sprint makes their promise of a Septmeber launch.

On that day, the Xohm website will be updated to show locations, coverage and prices. The company had previously stated they aimed to keep the Xohm monthly price point at around what users pay for terrestrial broadband -- in other words, less than $50. Speeds, as most had expected, should be in the 2-4Mbps range with occasional bursts. Executives have pegged those speeds at closer to 3-5Mbps, and say they've seen speeds as high as 11Mbps when close to towers.

Trouble finding high-bandwidth backhual links, alongside some kinks in the Xohm billing system, resulted in Sprint announcing a major launch delay back in April. The company ultimately struck a significant number of new deals with microwave backhaul operators. Gearmaker Proxim says their microwave gear can offer 200Mbps at 20 miles (30 if you've got enough height), a far cry from the 1.5Mbps provided by a T1.

With billing and backhaul issues sorted out, the launch is now fully greenlit, and the Chicago and DC markets should go live shortly after Baltimore. Boston, Philadelphia and Dallas/Ft. Worth are on deck, with no firm dates. The September 26/October 6 Baltimore launch date coincides with the Mobile Content & Marketing Expo in San Jose. After years of hype (flashback to our 2004 report), it will be nice to finally see something we can really get our hands on.

Re: I don't understand

i just don't understand the thinking on this, why not start in smaller mostly rural towns first where they are more likely to get all of their business.people in the big city's are not going to switch from dsl or cable for this.once again just screw the rural trash, why should i expect anything different

Close enough to DC to show it off if they need to.

Small area that they can test in.

Caps?

This has probably been addressed somewhere else before, but I will just ask it anyway:

Any word on if there will be caps or not?

Re: Caps?

No word on caps yet, but with the broadband environment we find ourselves in, I'd think it's likely.

I realize it will be more expensive here, but if it's anything like the stuff they've got in Europe, it will be very usable.

Re: Caps?

Do not kno yet as I haven't had a chance to test for myself.. Locations will have demos to test services. I am telling this stuff before I probably should if that is why you r directing the "Mr. Mysterious" towards me. I am on the retail side of things.

Not impressed

Personally, i'm not going to believe a damn thing about the hype till I see real usuage results.. I think theres going to be antenna aiming, tree and other conflicting problems for real world performance, then not to mention the whole possiblity of caps when the kiddies start leaving downloaders on over night.....

/sigh, but we will see.. I hope they prove me wrong

Xohm in Baltimore? Close to Sprint HQ

According to Xohm president Barry West, Baltimore was picked as the inaugural market for several reasons -- not the least of which was that it's close to Sprint HQ in northern Virginia, which meant he could quickly bring a lot of personnel resources to bear as it got built out. Plus it's close to D.C., which helps it impress lawmakers, never a bad thing when you are asking for a lot of favors from the FCC. Read our interview with Barry West and the news about their buildout improvments over at Sidecut Reports.

I'm hoping

DSLBB gives XOHM it's own forum separate from Sprint. XOHM employees would like that best.. Believe me that is preferred..
