| Cool That's Nice, might reduce my need for 3rd party software but I've been able to play almost any video that my computer can decode for months thanks to »tversity.com/home On my XBox 360 It's not hard at all to install. Would be very nice of microsoft and sony to make it easier but I'm not dying for this feature. | |

| said by elios :does that work over the LAN or like that crappy winamp on that had to go out to the net and back also how did you getting working on the 360 or is yours moded? TVersity works in any number of ways. In my case, it installs as a plug-in on my NAS device. My PCs see my NAS as a network share; my XBox360 sees it as a media server; my iPod sees it as an iTunes radio station. TVersity rocks. And, if a given media streaming client doesn't natively understand a format, TVersity transcodes to a format that the client *does* understand. Thus, while Divx/Xvid support has been rumored for XBox 360 for nearly a year now, it hasn't mattered because TVersity's transcoded it for longer than that. -- Everyday, thousands of new cars are delivered to their new owners with poorly-selected radio station presets. | |

I use Transcode 360 now and I have no had a single problem. Hmm... Sounds like when I was first playing with things last year. The problem was because much of my media was stored in AAC. Once I: A) updated my XBox360 firmware; and, B) downloaded the iPod CODECs from the XBox360 Live Marketplace, all of the red slashed-circles went away.
I still get the occasional file that plays oddly, but they're files that my wife either got from friends or via Soul Seek. So, I'm not sure how they were recorded, in the first place. They play, they just play slow and "stuttery". -- Everyday, thousands of new cars are delivered to their new owners with poorly-selected radio station presets.

I have been using XBMC for years now, the only thing it cant do is HiDef stuff, which is mostly TV shows off Discovery & PBS. It also cant do .TS/.TP files. I have a HTPC (Dual Core AMD system) running Media Portal, but its just not the same as XBMC. I would really like to replace it with a better system. If they do this, ill jump on the Xbox 360 bandwagon, but basically use it for media only (my original xbox is never used to play games).

My 11 and 8 year old kids love streaming music and movies from the server. They think it's great that the music they listen to on their PC can be cranked over the HTS.

| Re: How about X264/MKV? said by Goober :You're right. DivX and Xvid is getting long in the tooth. X264 is where it's at. For the future, I agree, but at the present, HW for H264 is MUCH more expensive. XVID can throw onto most medium to high end existant HW without problem with only SW upgrades, but H264 requires new HW. That's a pretty big difference. It extends to newly designed and bought purpose-built HW too: cheap HW can do XVID these days pretty readily, but HW for H264 isn't as cheap AFAIK.
Comcast is planning to buy MPEG2-and-lower-only capable converter boxes en masse in the *future*; I am advocating *those* cheapies are done XVID-*minimum*, since it would allow them to move their entire channel line to a much better position than depending on MPEG2 crap. I admit their MPEG2 is getting much better, though, with a lot of great improvements in the line, but MPEG2 is longer in the tooth than XVID.

| Hook PC up to LCD TV Doesn't anyone else have their PC hooked up to a fairly large LCD tv? You can surf the net in your comfy chair as well as watch Joost, Joox and others doing this. Get a hand held mouse, Firefox with Mouse gestures(to enlarge text right click and motion downwards) and enjoy the net from your recliner.
I prefer such to having a box solution.

| That's because everyone is not as technically inclined as someone like you and me so they need a more simple method to do something like this. That's why Xbox live arcade and the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console are such a big hit. Everyone doesn't know how to set up Rom software on their pc or connect the computer to the TV. | |

| TVerstiy Was great when I tried it yesterday, not so good today as it can't be detected by my 360. I couldn't play any of the Mpeg2 files I record with my PVR bu tI did get a few AVIs here and there to work, the whole start of that project was to see if perhaps I could get something to play Elephant's Dream (1o8o avi version) for me as my system seemed too slow, now that I've installed the latest FFDshow however it seems to run mostly fine even while the system was busy. That didn't work because it doesn't like the open dml avi at all, netier does ATI's Avivo converter. I digress, my hole point to that was that TVersity is nice but has many bugs and even tough I'm only a novice with this program and not to PCs its still fustrating to not be able to get past step one.
My two cents as to which Microsoft should do and why they haven't done it is that they need to make a sort of media center lite that fraserves/transcodes to the 360 using buffering on either or booth systems. Maybe even a full media player on the 360 and allow it to access various types of shares.
As it is right now it has a wonderful capability to be a great media player as well (well they really do need an interface upgrade too its horrible for large collections)however I feel that they may have locked away features to start a revenue stream for the media market place and possibly home server. I can understand that from a business practice but I think it would be more benificial to get customers started sharing their own media and comfortable with it then show them all of what is avaliable out there.
