Yahoo, AT&T Renew Ties
Expand deal, will rework portal again...

Given Yahoo's relative decline in stature (at least compared to Google) and AT&T's significant growth with the acquisition of BellSouth, the baby bell had been wanting to renegotiate their portal deal with the company since last year. Yesterday the two companies announced a new deal that expands the partnership somewhat. As part of the deal, the AT&T/Yahoo portal is once again getting a facelift:

A new look and feel for the att.net portal, "powered by Yahoo!," beginning in the second quarter, for new customers. Later in the year, the att.net portal, which will run on the My Yahoo! and Yahoo! Mail platforms, will be available to existing AT&T Yahoo! customers as well as those AT&T Internet customers in the former BellSouth service area and those with the legacy AT&T WorldNet service.

The two companies did not disclose the financial details of the deal, though Yahoo will have advertising access to significantly more wireless and broadband customers. With profits slipping, Yahoo yesterday announced they'd be cutting 1,000 jobs.

Flickr?

I wonder if this will now give us former BellSouth customers Flickr Pro access that other AT&T customers have through the Yahoo deal? Seems like the SBC Yahoo folks have been able to get this benefit, but us poor BellSouth customers were left out.

Re: Flickr?

Why wouldn't the SBC customers get it when they were the original ones with the contract with Yahoo!? Remember...SBC bought ATT, not the other way around, so the Yahoo contract migrated from SBC to ATT after that merger.

What's your point? I said that the SBC customers did have this but the former Bellsouth customers do not.

Fine

That would be fine with me if BellSouth Customer can get the same price as SBC Customer Footprint for DSL.

Only a matter of time...

...before ATT absorbs Yahoo!. They need something for the masses who actually *do* think portals are useful, and there is some good functionality in there if you configure it right. Much better than the mess Comcast forces on its customers.

The Yahoo! Mail interface, however, has become such a poorly programmed ad-bloated mess that it is painful to use about the only "improvement" would be to kill it and start over. Or just forget it.

Re: Only a matter of time...

With the $40+billion offer by Microsoft, I don't think AT&T is going to take them over any time soon.

Re: Only a matter of time...

Considering when I posted that, and the totally unexpected "offer" Ballmer rolled out yesterday, I take no responsibility regarding anything Yahoo!

Me either! Especially when I take things out of context.
I read this post when you initially posted it and then thought of it when I read about the possible acquisition.

Re: Only a matter of time...

Ballmer tried this last year too. Let's see if he manages to wear the Yahoo! board of directors down this time around...
