Video site strikes additional ad revenue sharing deals...
(old news - 11:01AM Sunday Nov 16 2008)
tags: Video · business
Youtube isn't just for idiots riding their skateboards into oncoming highway traffic anymore. This week saw YouTube agree to host full-length films and TV shows from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's archives. According to Reuters, YouTube will host the highly intellectual "American Gladiators" program to YouTube on one channel, while showing MGM films like "Bulletproof Monk" and "The Magnificent Seven" alongside ads on other channels. The deal comes on the heels of YouTube's recent deal with CBS, part of a broader trend of broadcasters striking ad-sharing deals with YouTube, instead of trying to get their content pulled offline.

Just in time

Cable Cos and ATT are getting those Monthly Caps in place just in time.

JasonOD

Re: Just in time

They're not stupid. I'm a stockholder owning shares of both Comcast and ATT, and we're already pissed off enough as it is. Both companies have to increase profit margins, and if they can't get the IPTV video content players to pay, then caps are the only alternative.

I'm not against overages either and disagree with Comcast simply terminating high bandwidth accounts. As far as I'm concerned, they are taking money away from the company by not allowing overage charges. Bandwith is cheap enough, so even charging a quarter a gig would be mostly profit.

You really think Comcast's and ATT's profit margins aren't high enough already? You don't see Verizon putting any caps on their FIOS...

Give them time. If they see it's a big success for the other big guys they will do it too.

There is no bandwidth crunch. Comcast is worried because it doesn't own its own backbone and has to buy its bandwidth from an upstream provider or at the very least be on the losing end of a peering relationship since most of its traffic is customers downloading from the Interwebs.

AT&T, on the other hand, owns more bandwidth than god but has been incredibly short sighted and greedy when it comes to planning upgrades for the last mile. They don't like bandwidth hogs because they can't really compete with their competition. DSL pair bonding never left the lab and their FTTP footprint is so minuscule, it might as well not exist.

As another poster mentioned...you don't see Verizon worried about this silliness, do you?

That's because VZ had the forethought to actually buy their way to owning a pretty big chunk of the Internet backbone via the MCI/UUNET purchase. And then they went out and built a FTTP plant.

Shareholders hated it at the time. Many shortsighted oafs, the same kind that are out of work on wall street now, were crying murder. But If I were an investor with cash, I'd buy VZ.

They have a long term plan that beats all others and have proved that it works. ...and with the current stock market conditions, the stock has never been a better buy.

AT&T will only succeed if it can buy its way to success with lobbyists and killing competition.

Comcast can always go back to being a video provider.

Why should they have to pay? They already pay for bandwidth and so do Comcast and at&t cusotmers. Sorry and tough shit for you and them. Keep trying these caps Comcast and at&t will be the ones fucked in the end. Just wait.

Comcast and at&t already make plenty enough money and could make more if they just quit being rtetared and get rid of retard management and get management with BRAINS. Pretty simple actualy. They want to do things the LAZY way. Nice to know you support retards.

And the way the internet is evolving everyone will eventually be a high bandwidth user. Cable companies with some content being web based will be forcing consumers to use cap space thus creating overages. your monthly bill will eat up any profit you think you're going to make. Even basic web browsing and email has increased by a huge amount. Content is the number one reason we can no longer use dial up. Oh but I'm sure they will just randomly raise caps for people from time to time once they get them in place. If we still had pay per use like years ago the whole internet would not have turned out as it has.

Be careful what you wish for.

Oh and as a side note, there are much better investments than ATT and Comcast, maybe you wouldn't be pissed if you checked out other investments.

Speaking of caps and pay per byte whatever.

You know I'm just an average joe. I'll watch my Knight Rider or The Office on nbc.com and I got no problems watching the ads which is much less than if I was watching it on TV.

Am I alone in feeling that the day my internet bill goes above I dunno say $60 a month I will simply get rid of it?

Do these companies really think the average person is gonna pay $100+ a month in overages whatever because they need to download HD movies etc?

Hey I like the internet just as much as anyone else but I got priorities like HEAT/ELECTRIC/WATER/PHONE

These companies need a wake up call or I'm just alone in not being able to afford some crazy ass internet bill cause I want to watch and download all this crap on the internet. I will simply start driving down to blockbuster again and renting.

They are stupid enough to think you will still pay full price for internet stop using it so much and go back to watching regular TV. That's the plan. Frankly if I had to get rid of one I'd get rid of cable. Tv is just TV. The internet you can do many things.

Now if people are smart and they live in an area where they have choice they would do somethng, like this to teach these companies. Ok I have Charter cable, internet phone with at&t( at&t also offers DSl ) so both have caps. OK Well I'd go with who had the highest cap( probably Charter ). Then I dump BOTH phone and cable. Go with directTv and just use strictly cell through Verizon or use something like skype or other VoIp. Now at&t not only lost me as a potential internet customer, but also lost my phone business. Charter lost me as a cable customer after 8 years. Will either company make back the revenue from me on cap overages? Nope. Since the ISPs say only a SMALL % of customers even go over the cap, the revenue they will get from overage fees is very small. If people dump their other services like me they will LOSE revenue. And it will only take a small % for that to have an effect. So ISPs are being short sighted, obtuse and just plain ignorant if they think this won't happen.

Re: Just in time

I guess its just different for me. I have to have my dish TV for my kids. Theres icarly/drake and josh and so many other cartoons etc. Don't get me wrong I don't just let my kids sit in front of the TV all day but once homework is done and what not they are allowed to watch some of their favorite shows. Plus I got some shows I like to watch that aren't as easy for me to find on the net. Besides I would rather watch them on the big screen.

Don't get me wrong I love my highspeed internet and what not but push come to shove I will drop it and go back to dial up before I pay some crazy ass amount cause some greedy dude at AT&T wants to charge me by the byte because they can't adapt to a chaning business model..

I pay for my internet and who ever im connecting to pays for their connection so it seems to me someone is just being greedy.

adblock plus?

When I watch South Park episodes from southparkstudios.com, adblock plus actually prevents all the ads from playing. So to me, I see a seamless episode ad free. Wonder if it will work on youtube also.

And for a damn good reason, southparkstudio's ads have blaring audio compared to the show's barely audible volume.

Hulu usually has widescreen and 480p or 720p, what is YouTube offering, Square Definition?

yeah hulu

@comcast.net

Re: adblock plus?

Was watching 30 Rock this week on Hulu in 480p via my 42 LCD TV Mac Mini connected to it.

Awesome and saving tons of money..no need for cable TV.

Free SD makes me happy having a somewhat HD via Hulu amazing!

So the creators of SouthPark go through all the effort to provide you access to EVERY episode for FREE and all they ask you to do is put up with a few 30 second ads and you can't even do that? Talk about ungrateful. So basically you want people to make content to entertain you and you don't want to have to subsidize it in any way. In other words people are supposed to work for free just to entertain you. You've got a lot of nerve. Who in the hell do you think you are? God, emperor, king? YOU are the reason why these companies don't want to put their stuff online because you are so cheap as not even put up with 2 mintues of comericals fora half hour show. I'm 100% possitive that your boss at Burger King doesn't expect you to work for free.

So all the ad revenue from when it aired on REGULAR TV didn't make them enough money, they want to make more by making you watch ads on the internet offering too.

Actually I found out about Adblock Plus working when I was at a friend's place and he was watching South Park. I never knew there were ads in it to begin with, since I had ABP working the entire time. And like others have mentioned, the unequalized audio. I'll skip the ads so I don't have my ears blown out, thank you.

And if I wasn't getting these episodes from their site, it would be somewhere else for FREE. allsp.com anyone? If they want to make money/pay the expenses of running the shows online... then provide adequate reason to NOT block them. Simple as that.

And no, im not king or god. But hey I'm just an average joe working his SALARY job 40 hours a week. And I found out a little gimmick to skip ads. I'm not the only one who would take advantage of this. Get over it.

Re: adblock plus?

Not stealing. They provide it on their OWN SITE. I view it off THAT SITE. Therefore it is not stealing. If their ads are being blocked by programs, that is there problem. They need to resolve the issue so that they cannot be blocked. Other websites, such as IMDB, still show ads with ABP enabled. If they want to get money from that advertisements, they better damn well make sure the ads actually show up.

Maybe, hopefully not....I have been watching the Star Trek episodes on Youtube and they buffer up pretty quickly on my connection (5/2), no pixelation and the video quality is acceptable (VCR quality), even running full screen. Maybe the new content will be just as good....

audio

from my experience the audio quality of you tube has been horrendous. I cannot tolerate it when people go to youtube looking for some new hit song to play on their computer, let alone a nice stereo system. No matter where it is, I feel like i am trapped in a tin can with some rap artist. This is the main reason I never use youtube.

Yup, I never watch movie trailers or videoclips on youtube. The video's sound is 64 kbps mp3 MONO.

Others sites such as www.dailymotion.com offers stereo sound.

Have you ever tried the &fmt=18 trick? On all videos uploaded since the start of 2008, I can get Stereo sound at 128kbps sound or 192kbps sound from a YouTube video with higher quality video. The &fmt=18 trick even makes you go to faster servers . This should work for you if you have a recent version of Flash player and you know the proper way it's supposed to be in. Compare these two videos and let me know what you think quality wise they are. Don't use the embedded players on this page, only use the links below the embedded players.

But overall, this is a good move. Sure it may slow down the YouTube servers a bit, but it'll at least maybe keep some piracy down.
