Plus they don't want to irritate slow-connection users
(old news - 02:29PM Sunday Nov 18 2007)
tags: Video · business
There were false reports around the Internet earlier this week that YouTube would be upgrading videos to HD format next year. Reports now clarify that YouTube is indeed updating quality (after just updating file size limits) but that there are no plans for HD on the horizon. The main reason for this is that user-generated content isn’t filmed or formatted in HD so it wouldn’t benefit viewers at all to do this type of upgrade. But there’s another reason as well. YouTube co-founder Steve Chen points out that YouTube is an equal-opportunity provider which is accessed even by people who have slow video connections. Those folks who watch video clips on dial-up already have to wait long enough to see two-legged dogs dancing on their screens. YouTube wouldn’t want to alienate those users by moving up to an HD format that would slow things down even more.

Bottom Line.

The higher the bitrate the less they can host. BW isn't cheap, I'm personally happy with the current bitrates, though the ability to change its size might be nice even if its a little more washed out.

Re: Bottom Line.

I would rather seem them upgrade their video player. Whenever I move the circle to advance in the video, I can never place it where I want it.

YouTube HD not worth it... YouTube finally SD: Priceless...

Would be nice of them to bring their streaming content up to the 384-512Kbps level, it would make a nice improvement in PQ.

If course the quality of the uploaded source material matters greatly....

Greatly compressed HD streams would probably require at least a 6-10Mbps downstream connection, which is not practical for their service.

YouTube could make their player have the ability to chose the quality of playback - just like some players do for Yahoo and others. That way they could still satisfy their dial-up and slower broadband users, but allow their fast broadband users to experience the highest quality that the native clip provides.

Youtube should adopt some of Winamp's NSV technology. They're able to stream relatively high quality video at pretty low bitrates.

BW isn't cheap but you just might be able to get some big ISPs like Verizon to subsidize it. Crap content or not, the providers need demonstratable reasons why people should opt for the more expensive, faster broadband packages. YouTube HD with a smattering of real HD content might offer that.

As things are now you can stream almost anything with even a pokey 768/128 connection.

HD?

USA is not ready for HD streamed videos on youtube or anywhere else on the internet.

A lot of people in the USA are having a hard enough time with fuzzy low quality videos.

May be the folks in S. Korea/Japan where 100mbs costs $20/month or whatever it costs over there can do it.

I can easily get normally compressed HD video just fine with a 6600 kbps connection. You don't need 100 mbps to watch HD video.

See this thread from last week:
»Akamai's HD Proof Of Concept Portal
»www.thehdweb.com has a built-in HD bandwidh check that I easily satisfy.

Re: HD?

In my hood 3000 kbps is the max you can get no matter what your willing to pay. I don't know the numbers but I would think no one but the big city people can get 6600 kbps.

Pixelation Blows!

I feel for the dialup users... but what about - me?
No one cares that *I* despise playing card size video that is pixelated to the point of being unwatchable?

Yeah, this is exactly why I prefer searching for the videos from their original sources.

*MOST* videos are snagged and resized from TV or other sources.
Once YT gets ahold of them... UGH! Shrunk and Flash-ified and they look like crap!

They *SHOULD* make the vids like other sources... where you can choose bandwith/size/bitrate/file size and *WE* can choose the bigger - better quality vids 'cause *WE* have bigger pipes.

Naw, fuck it up for everyone like it's been... that's a better idea, huh?

When are they releasing the upgraded codec?

What I am wondering is when is it that they are moving to some of the newer codecs like VC-1. Seems like I remember hearing talk about this a little while back.

its crap

Youtube looks worse than mpg1 video. I would say somewhere between dialup Realvideo and mpg1. Its crap. CRAP CRAP CRAP. I always have to go searching for the source, which often doesn't exist.

It is YouTube

FOR FREE!

Yes, you do not pay anything to watch stupid people dancing in there underwear with a lampshade on there head.

I guess,
A. Why would I need to watch that crap in HD?
B. Most of what I watch on my regular TV is not HD.
C. The US is plenty ready for HD, just not YouTube HD

I'm Glad....for now.

I'm not against it, but if they wanted to allow HD videos then they should also allow users to view everything without HD.

I've used You-Tube with dial-up before. It's already horribly slow. It's slow enough that you actually have to make the decision "do I want to watch this badly enough to wait?"

With HD, I suspect that my 1.5Mbps connection would be insufficient.

Youtube has good competition.

Stage6.com isn't bad but not enough videos still.
Very true. Things change.
If YouTube wants to compete with sites like Stage6 in the future, they'd better start posting a higher quality of video. The sooner, the better, imo.

I like online video. I like it even better when it's at least decent quality.

Same system as iPhone?

I know on the iPhone youtube videos are compressed when streamed.

Why couldn't they just implement a similar feature for dial-up users? And let the rest of us at least enjoy SD quality.

What's the point?

Don't forget--the source would have to be HD in the first place. How many home videos are recorded in 480p/1080i/1080p?
