| Re: They aren't missing much I have it on very good authority (several mates of mine work at TiVo) that the SDV TiVo switch is going to be released in October. I also hear that Comcast is working with TiVo on a switch for their DVRs. I'm not clear on why they would need one, though. *shrug*
Anyway, the new Summer 2008 software release has a placeholder in the Settings menu to adjust the SDV TiVo switch settings.

CableLabs OK's Switched Video Tuners From Cisco, Motorola Devices Designed to Let Third-Party Devices Like DVRs Access Switched Channels
By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 7/17/2008 7:02:00 PM
CableLabs has certified the switched digital video tuning resolvers developed by Cisco Systems and Motorola that are designed to give third-party devices like TiVo DVRs access to switched TV channels.
In May, Cisco and Motorola submitted their adapters, which are the size of small set-top boxes, to CableLabs for qualification testing.
CableLabs senior vice president of communications Mike Schwartz on Thursday confirmed that the Cisco and Motorola devices have been qualified, noting that the research consortium does not typically announce certifications.
Currently TiVo DVRs and other consumer electronics can access linear cable programming through an operator-provided CableCard.
However, CE products based on the CableLabs-developed tru2way specificationwhich would allow them to access two-way services such as switched digital videoare not currently available. Nor do all cable systems support tru2way technology (formerly referred to as the OpenCable Application Platform).
Until then, another mechanism is required to let third-party devices access channels delivered through SDV systems, which transmit TV channels only when a subscriber requests them.
The Cisco STA1520 or Motorola MTR700 switched digital video tuning adapters would handle communication to and from the headend for SDV channels, communicating with a TiVo DVR via a USB connector.
The SDV adapters are expected to be offered by MSOs including Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications and Cablevision Systems, to subscribers in areas where they are deploying switched digital video technology. The cable operators and TiVo have said they plan to work cooperatively to notify TiVo subscribers that they will need the new external adapter.
Initially, the cable industry had expected the SDV tuners to be ready to deploy in the second quarter of 200 -- Caddy

Frankly I'd rather see Cox roll out TiVoware in their STBs first so I can avoid all the ads in my SAs. The level of SA advertising has gotten horrible.

| Re: YouTube Videos Now Available On TiVo I'm so over YouTube! Haven't even visited the site in at least four months. But I'm probably just becoming an old fogie. I've never had a Facebook or MySpace page and haven't entered a chat room in years. One of my TiVos can get this service but I doubt I'll take time to use it. | |

Luckily (I guess) I was never 'under' YouTube, so I guess I can't be over it now. Seriously though, I can't understand why this is added value to my Tivo HD. I guess I just don't get it (YouTube that is).
Oh well... | |

| Just more profit from public stupidity A stupid set-top box is NOT the answer to merging your online and TV viewing experience. Repeat that to yourself over and over until it starts to make sense.
Ever heard of WebTV, that dispicable little box that lured hundreds from the wallets of countless non-technicals. Even most of those consumers finally figured out that all they really needed to do was connect their TV to their PC with a $4 cable, and they instantly had something FAR superior to this dumb little box.
You can hardly even find a replacement for you old TV that is not a widescreen HDTV now, and any HDTV made today can be easily attached to a decent PC, so why are people still falling for this external box crap? These devices are obviously meant to expoit the same folks that still have 12:00 endlessly flashing on their VCR's.
I suggest that if you are actually "watching internet video on your TV with your nifty set-top box", that you go buy a clue and wake up to the real world of (H)ome (T)heater (P)ersonal (C)omputers that many of us have been enjoying for years now. This message was typed on a 56" widescreen LCD HDTV that is hooked directly to a PC, and if I wanted to view a youtube video on my system all I need to do is click a youtube site link within the full screen 16:9 display of my web browser, wow.
