GPS enabled employee phones on the rise
(old news - 10:58AM Friday Sep 24 2004)
tags: wireless · privacy
The same kind of cell-phone integrated GPS technology used by parents to make sure their kids really are at the mall, is now being embraced by corporations. CNET notes that many companies have begun giving employees GPS enabled cellphones to help track their whereabouts. When an employee roams outside of so called "Geofence" zones, alarms are raised back at corporate HQ. "There's no electro shock--yet," jokes the CEO of one company working on the technology.

That's already available and used, by some big corporations, some offices will have ceiling cams in them, but they are noticeable, so the employee knows they have the ability to be watched.

When the 'company' handed out cell phones to all the techs, I was the known techie in the office that my co-workers tapped to make sure we were not being tracked. The company got the cheapest model and it didn't have gps. Some of the folks handed them back to the company anyway and said just use my voice mail that out-pages to my pager anyway.

I can understand wanting to make sure employees are working when they are supposed to be, but is it their business every time I have to use the toilet? Anyway, what's to keep me from just leaving my cell phone at my desk? Or just refusing to have one at all?

Productivity should be the measure of how much work an employee does, not whether he is at his desk every second of his work day.

Well...

Ok for the corporate car to have a monitored GPS but a cell phone... I think it's an abuse of power.

Well, there is one situation where I think it would be a problem...

After you've clocked out... Honestly, what I do on my own time after I've clocked out is never the business of my workplace... By monitoring the cell phone (depending on if you carry a corporate phone 24/7 like I've had to do in the past), your workplace has the potential to be a bit too nosey.

Exactly! When you've clocked out you take the corporate car home and use you own car, with corporate cell phone you must keep it with you.

I used to do that at one of my previous jobs... They didn't understand the concept of the lunch hour and were always calling me just as I was getting food... Interestingly enough, I ate at the same time every day, so they should have known better...

But yeah, turning off the phone (and removing the battery in some phones) will do the trick...

a simple workaround

simple solution. Leave your corp phone where the GPS alarm won't go off. The forward your calls from that phone to any other phone, even your personal cell phone.
Example:
Your boss sends you to a boring conference in Iowa for the week. The conference is in the same hotel you are staying at. Leave your cell phone in your hotel room, and forward your calls to your personal phone. Then go have fun at the local strip bar. Your boss will think you are at the hotel and you will get all your calls.

Usually cell phone companies charge extra for forwarding calls. Sprint PCS charges $.10 a minute. »www1.sprintpcs.com/explore/ueCon···rwarding I think they would notice.

But just say you forgot your power adapter and the battery died so you were out searching for a new one. Just don't say anything about going to the Lumberyard!;):p

That was meant to be an immature joking reponse. That was a review I said the spelling was immature, not the person. The person had a very good review actually, I just thought the spelling could've been a little better. My post here was meant to joke around with my boss because he goes on this site as well.

This opens a whole new can of worms

You really need GPS to know if an employee is doing there job or not? If a an employee is suppose to get a certain job done and it's not, can't the employer put 2 and 2 together? An employer knows whether your doing your job or not without GPS.

This opens a whole new can of worms. We have companies using GPS phones. We have companies using key loggers on the computers. We have a car rental company install GPS trackers in there cars to keep track of customers. We have Progressive Insurance telling you if you install a little box to keep track of your driving, you get your insurance lowered. We have the city of Chicago installing camera's all over the city. We had the problem with Wal Mart using RFID's, keeping track of what you buy. This doesn't include spyware and adware on your computer.

What's the next big thing going to be?

Nextel offers it

I know Nextel offers a service. We use them for our maintenance people that are always in the field. You can bring up a webpage and it gives you there locations on a map. Works great for being able to dispatch people closest to the site with the problem. FYI the GPS phones are big ugly and yellow

While an employee is ON the clock, sure...but while they're OFF the clock, no, you absolutely do NOT.

I personally have no problems with GPS tracking while employees are on the clock, if their position is one where such tracking would be beneficial to the business (delivery drivers, for instance, where GPS tracking of vehicles is already commonplace), but when it covers "employees in general" and any off-the-clock time, it's gone too far.

As for which phones/networks can do the tracking: it's pretty much possible to locate phones on GSM, CDMA, and iDEN because of the E911 rules (AMPS and IS-136 TDMA are basically dead), but GSM doesn't use GPS at all (it uses triangulation of signals from cell sites) and CDMA normally requires "assistance" from cell sites to do the tracking; only iDEN phones can act as standalone GPS receivers, which is why nearly all tracking apps so far have been for Nextel, who uses iDEN.

Who says you have every right to? Just because someone works for you does not mean you own them. If you feel they are not doing what you paid them for, fire them. And if you are that neurotic that you have to monitor your employees whereabouts, then you have some serious trust or control issues.

I think the most offensive thing about this entire thread is how many people accept this. Somewhere along the road, society's view of employment has been completely warped. Employment is a barter of sorts. Person provides services for Employer. Employer compensates person. Person does not provide services, Employer does not provide compensation. It's a simple equation really. I don't understand why people are so nonchalante about this.. "Oh.. well, I'll just find a way to get around it! That'll show 'em!" Employers have no right to do this at all in my opinion (and i'm sure it's illegal too).

I can't even fathom what would make anyone think this kind of thing is acceptable.

And what law are you refering to? because i see a massive liability on any company that does this. Plus if they know where you are, and you are in some sort of crime, gee guess who has evidence, and it was on company time. Why would a company throw themsleves into this ?

All wiretap laws end at the demark of the premise. So they cant listen to your conversations that arent internal. if they record you making a call outside their building there breaking the law. They can only monitor you on THEIR premisis. Which isnt the world. Plus this would cause me to really push this with my boss, because i am sure his office end at properly line no more.....

Re: my phone is broken

They can't listen in on your conversations just because they give you a GPS phone although if you are using a work phone for personal use, especially if you are told not to you can be fired WITHOUT recourse. They don't have to listen in to conversations. They pay the bill. No need to wiretap. Also if your dumb enough to commit a crime with a GPS enabled phone, than you deserve what you get. All the company has to do is hand over the records.

Screw That

My last job put GPS in the work trucks and 3 peeps quit including me.That wasn't the bigest reason for me though.

The day my boss hands me a GPS celly I'm going to shuve it up his arse.
I drive 400+ miles a day on a sales route and it gets old but it sure beats the hell out of being at the office all day with your boss.I like my freedom being on the road at work.
