Your Verizon FiOS Concierge Will See You Now Company develops new tools to woo stubborn landlords... Friday Mar 26 2010 09:19 EST Verizon has of course halted FiOS deployments in any new areas, but they are still busily building out in cities where they've recently signed franchise agreements (NYC, Philly, DC, Pittsburgh). While the company developed smaller ONTs and bendable fiber for city building installs, Verizon's CEO recently stated the company is still struggling in cities with two things: "landlords and cable companies." To help grease the wheels when dealing with the former, Verizon this week announced that they've developed a new "concierge" service for FiOS. From the Verizon statement: quote: The offering, to be provided free of charge, organizes all of a building's available concierge amenities under one master platform and interface that automates many repetitive tasks, such as delivery and visitor management, allowing the building staff to focus on providing a more personalized service to occupants. Additionally, Verizon Concierge - accessible via any Web browser, mobile application for popular smartphones and soon on FiOS TV - allows a building's occupants to communicate with each other to set up carpools or clubs; have quick and easy access to schedule property amenities, and set up services from local businesses such as dry cleaners and taxis; and make reservations at a local restaurant or place a takeout order.
Apparently, by offering the free service to property owners (see this video), Verizon can sell landlords more quickly on the idea of getting FiOS installed. The technology Verizon's using appears to be based on services created by Simplikate. |

Sounds like an innovative idea that could workCreate a LAN in each apartment bldg; add comm with landlord and his staff; and the normal concierge svcs that are std in high end apartment bldgs and you have a system that may get landlords to install and push FIOS. Looks like a smart move by Verizon.

Great video, but ...... Verizon has a horrible track record when it comes to back-end systems. Just look at its billing, ordering, or can-I-get-FIOS-here systems? And when these don't work, which is the norm, getting useful support is just as miserable.

Re: VZTotally agree. Nice way to incentivize MDUs, which are cheaper to install than single family residences these days I think.

Great ideaThe building that I live in is brand new & has FiOS, but maintenance requests, common room reservations, and package notifications are all done on paper. Would be nice for the landlord to take advantage of these online services if they're being offered for free.

Most NYC landlords don't want to be bothered. They want to receive a rent check and never have to be present, or take calls concerning their slum properties. I believe sheer sloth and laziness is what is blocking FIOS from getting into many buildings.

The effect you see is the byproduct of rent stabilization, which deters building owners from competing with each other for tenants, and removes any incentive to improve tenant services, such as offering FIOS.

Re: Most NYC landlords don't want to be bothered.Did I say all, or most? Read again.
Look across 56th st walkups in Manhattan's west side, or bedford stuyvesant(shingle buildings not brownstones), or bushwick. There are so many buildings where it is obvious the landlord either hasn't walked in them for ten years or simply doesn't care. You can call to say your ceiling is leaking and they'll tell you to put tape over it. Tell them you have mice and they'll say to get a cat, then use your pet ownership as a lease violation when you complain about bad plumbing.
The only reason they're even wired with coax is because it is an absolute must have for so many people.
Until the same is true for FIOS, it's not going to make its way into all of these buildings, which make up a nice portion of the city.

If the conditions are as deplorable as you suggest, then any rational person would move. Likewise, for FIOS, if its so "necessary", then move to a place that offers it. "Get a cat" - that's a good one.

Re: Most NYC landlords don't want to be bothered. If it were always that black and white 70% of the aforementioned areas would be vacant. if all landlords had that mentality & reasoning it'd certainly explain how the owners of said buildings can sleep at night.

*yawn*This is nothing new. Verizon bought a managed telecommunications in MDUs company called OnePoint in the early 2000s. It was renamed to Verizon Avenue. Now its called Verizon Enhanced Communities. » www.isp-planet.com/cplan ··· nue.html
