new to broadband, needing bit of help

I recently got Spring Fasconnect DSL. The modem they sent me is a zyxel SP-645R (I'm guessing the SP is for Sprint).
I can't send files or create games and need help either opening ports or stopping it altogether and then just buy a router or install firewall for security. Windows claims my user's guide will not open.... Any help at all is appreciated.

You can forward ports to get some games etc to work.
But you dont mention what games etc are alle the programs you want to use UPNP based?

Basically I would just turn the P645 into a bridge and use a router/firewall that supports UPNP if you need UPNP.

Do you know of any other way if my games/apps are not UPNP?
Also, I mostly play half-life and its mods (oldie but goodie) and run irc for chatting w/ friends.
