More carriersIts because mostly its available on more carriers this time around. And it is after all a upgraded unit. Not as much as some hoped but nevertheless..
I was going to upgrade to it but I'll stick with my Straight Talk conversion and upgrade to the regular iPhone 4 from my current 3GS. (Which I'm selling atm)

(Which I'm selling atm) What bloggers wanted is different than what others wanted. And buying an iPhone 4 is silly. You're spending thousands on a new contract but scrounging $100 on the phone? The 4S has the most powerful GPU on the market. The A5's GPU is more than twice as strong as the SGS2's. It also has Siri, and a significantly improved camera. What else could people want? A bigger screen? It makes very little sense.

Sorry, I guess he assumed that since your nickname is Darth Vader - you would recognize one of your own movie lines. "Take this mask off, and let me look on you, with my own eyes" I thought it was clever - except he left one word out. Take the mask off and "look" on it with your own eyes. Us oldsters like bigger screens so we can still read that tiny text. actually -- my biggest want in the iphone is to do away with the damn home screen button. make the device about the same size as a droid-x (4.2" i think) and use the extra real estate to bring meaningful multi-touch gestures to the iphone. have a certain swipe mean "home". this way -- you've removed all of the "abused" moving parts from the device. i've used a jailbreak app called "activator" for this purpose for years on my iphones and i can't imagine living without it. q.

How do you figure? The specs I have seen show the 4s processor to be 1ghz compared to either 1.2ghz SGS2 or 1.5ghz for T-Mobile's SGS2 version. How is it more than twice as strong?

The SGS2 has an ARM Mali-400 GPU, which is screaming fast, but it's still not as fast as the PowerVR SGX543MP2 in the iPhone 4S. It's still faster than everything else on the market. The iPhone 4S's CPU isn't anything special. They ship it with NEON (ARM's equivalent of MMX/SSE), which most other SoCs also do, with the exception of the Tegra 2 (yet another reason why the Tegra 2 was a disappointment). It's clocked lower than most other phones, but the iPhone traditionally has better battery life; it's a tradeoff, and Apple has clearly decided to go for more battery life at the expense of speed.

Re: More carriersYea that was my bad. I actually read it as CPU not GPU. Eyes playing tricks on me. Anyway you are correct. It does have a faster GPU but unremarkable CPU.

Power saver yes, most powerful not so much. GPU is good but Apple is about function not processing power. Again good chip undoubtable best by no means.

I said which I'm going to dumb down for you, was that I'm selling my iPhone 3GS and then going to buy a used iPhone 4 (Not the 4S) and I will take the SIM out of my Straight Talk AT&T powered service and put it into my iPhone 4. If you don't know what I'm talking about take a look at this thread: » www.howardforums.com/sho ··· it-work!Not sure what you mean when you said quote: but scrounging $100 on the phone?

All those "improvements" merely caught it up to Android phones already available, but with a smaller screen. Can't understand the fascination people have with the Iphone.

Why would you not just get the 4S? It has double the memory and much better every where else also. You would be wasting money getting a 4. Everyone seems to miss the fact that it comes with only 8GB storage and the lowest 4S comes with 16.

I have the 32GB iPhone 4, I know it comes in more sizes. My point was that they are selling an 8GB 4 for 99 and a 16GB 4S for 199. 99 for a phone with half the storage and an earlier generation doesn't make sense.

Re: SillyWhose curve? There are plenty of phone users out there with devices inferior to the iPhone 3GS. And arguably even devices with some specifications exceeding those of the latest iPhone do not offer the user experience of the Apple bubble. Big deal my phone has a 12 MP camera, and a xenon/LED flash, and a removable class 10 micro SD, and a DLNA server, and a fully capable Bluetooth stack, and an FM radio. It runs an old and abandoned version of Symbian and it quite frankly sux.

Many of the people who were in contract with a 3G or 3Gs at the time the Iphone 4 came out kept their phones instead of paying big bucks to upgrade. Now they can upgrade without paying big bucks so they are going to go for the new one.
So when the Iphone 5 comes out the Iphone 4 users will have something to upgrade to when their 2 years are up. When the Iphone 5S comes out then the 4S users will have something to upgrade to.
It's actually a pretty smart move on Apple's part. If you upgrade every two years there is something new from Apple for you to upgrade to.

Breaks all recordsAll in all its a good device. Heck I told my mom to get one since she is on Sprint. I'm no fanboy or Apple Hater, they make a solid device with a great UI. Just a bear to administer in a Corp enviroment, with itunes so I carry a Bionic.

It makes senseMany of my colleagues (I am one of the few who have a 4G droid on VZW) are on 3 or 3GS, so they are at the point to update to the 4s, however by purchasing one of these devices right now that means that they are going to have to pony up cash when Apple monetizes this old technology to the iphone x which eventually will have LTE or they are going to wait on the sidelines for the next 18-24 months to get one. With that said I also know a number of people that have an iphone 4 that are going to bite the bullet and pay $$$ for an iphone 4s, which absolutely doesn't make sense other than the fact that Apple is holding back voice (Siri) for the iphone 4 (for now) and have disposable cash. The iphone 4 is a fine phone (speed wise), so now it's an ipad 2. BTW - I still have my ipad and didnt upgrade to ipad2. It seems that every two is good w/ Apple otherwise you are just throwing cash out the door. Of course I have heard people glowing on Siri, with of course nobody actually using the thing yet. People are fanatics. This is a replay of MSFT in the 90's, except this time MSFT is notably absent--its Google and Apple that are fighting it out for the mobile platform. Those who poo poo open source don't understand it's power. In a short 2 years the droid platforms are now technically superior to Apple (I would say the software is not there) and now have marketshare lead also. It's good for competition tho, these devices are as powerful as a laptop was a few years ago. If I could truly do office, I would dump my laptop

Its all in the end user experience.Sure the iPhone might not have the greatest and newest technology in the market, Sure the iOS is not opened up to allow you to do anything you want. With that said, it does offer you an end user experience and stability second to non. It offers you the most secure OS on the planet. It offers you the most accessories in the market. It offers you best crafted product on the market. The phone works, it doesn't send you through a configuration and guessing game on how to send or receive a MMS. It doesn't suck the life of battery like a black hole. The iPhone 4s IMHO is still a year ahead of the competition.

Re: Its all in the end user experience.Sounds like you took a double dose of the Apple Kool Aid. Best crafted? That is a matter of opinion which I would disagree with. Most secure OS? They use to say that about the Mac OS and refuse to admit there are problems when a virus does pop up. I have sent several MMS with my Evo and never had to do a guessing game. It is light years behind phone coming out by others and will continue to fall farther behind and they have suckered millions into buying their hype.

Re: Its all in the end user experience. So your saying you did not have to do any configurations on your HTC Evo to get the pics your buddy sent you via MMS? Did you have to root your phone to get the latest android version? What version of android are you running on your phone? 2.1 / 2.2 / 2.3? or is it 3.1 and is it an official OS updated from HTC? Didn't HTC just a couple of weeks ago have a major security issue, that pretty much gave unfettered access to the HTC android phone? Doesn't it seem that a week doesn't go buy that there is a new security flaw found on the android OS that is due to a malicious app?
Hype you say, I will have to disagree with agree with you, I'm talking about the average Joe who wants a simple to use phone.
I also own an android tablet and use it every day, so yeah I'm not a typical kool aid drinker, I am a user.

Don't get itI don't really get the people saying the iPhone 4S was a minor upgrade, or a "slight refresh". It's a far larger improvement over the 4 than the 4 was over the 3GS...
Let's compare specs:
iPhone 2G/3G: 128MB RAM 412MHz (underclocked from 620MHz) ARM11 PowerVR MBX Lite 3D GPU
iPhone 3GS: 256MB RAM (2x) 600MHz (underclocked from 833MHz) ARM Cortex A8 (~2x faster) PowerVR SGX535 GPU (~3.5x faster in theoretical specs)
iPhone 4: 512MB RAM (2x) 800MHz (underclocked from 1 GHz) ARM Cortex A8 (~1.35x faster in benchmarks) PowerVR SGX535 GPU (Roughly the same as iPhone 3GS)
iPhone 4S 1024MB RAM (2x) 800MHz (underclocked from 1GHz) dual-core ARM Cortex A9 (~1.73x faster in benchmarks, ~2.4x faster theoretical) PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU (~7x faster in benchmarks)
In benchmarks, the 4S generally comes out a bit slower (CPU and GPU) than the iPad 2, since it's basically a lower clocked version of the same hardware.
It's hard to compare CPU performance to the Galaxy S 2, since the SGS2 isn't shipping with the latest version of Android; all browser benchmarks show the iPhone 4S as much faster than the SGS2 (2.3.3), but about the same as the Galaxy Tab (3.0), so I'm going to estimate the SGS2 at 1.2GHz is maybe 10-15% faster than the iPhone 4S, since the tab is at 1GHz.
GPU benchmarks are clear, though. The iPhone 4S has 70-80% more power than the SGS2.
Anyhow, the whole point of this was that the iPhone 4S represents probably the biggest hardware upgrade the iPhone has ever seen, and somehow people think it's "slight". WTF?
