iPhone Data Plan Price Drop?
More hints at lower pricing, this time from Business Week
by Karl Bode Monday 18-May-2009 tags: business · wireless
Earlier this month, rumors surfaced that AT&T was considering dropping the monthly iPhone data plan by $10, as part of an effort to lure more customers into the fold. Business Week now also says that AT&T is considering "cutting the price of its monthly service package or offering a range of lower-priced plans." Citing people "with knowledge of AT&T's thinking," reporter Olga Kharif suggests that lower data rate plans may be something Apple wants in exchange for extending AT&T's exlusive iPhone contract into 2011. As our readers are quick to note, AT&T jacked the price of data service $10 with the launch of the HSDPA-enabled iPhone, so a $10 cut is really just a return to EDGE-era pricing.

Overpriced

As it sits now the data plan is way overpriced considering the quality of AT&T's network in regards to data.

It's $15/month less than their primary competition ...

Probably Verizon since they are now the number 1 cell provider.

That was my guess also but everyone in the U.S. cost less than them.

Also depends on where you live. In my area, the 3g network is solid and works very well.

Re: Overpriced

That's still a problem that AT&T needs to fix. The city of chicago is terrible, plane and simple it's crap. They do not have enough capacity for all it's 3g users. For a major metropolitan city that is completely ridiculous.

Re: Overpriced

Its the same way here in Charlotte. 3G is slower than EDGE, that is when you can get on the 3G network most of the time it bumps you down to EDGE anyway.

I was in Old Town last weekend visiting my sister and didn't have problems with my 3G network there. Nice area by the way.

The loop itself is terrible. Outside of that it's hit or miss, just depends on the tower and amount of people.

Chicago....

Do you have the 2nd gen Iphone or 1st?
I've been considering an Iphone, however, where I work and reside on the south side of chicago I have found the only network that works all over is US Cell....and thats CDMA. I've been researching reviewers and unfortunatly for me most of the people I've read have persuaded me Not to get one. So My second question is...is the 3G in Chicago that bad or is this just a case where the silent majority is happy?

Re: Chicago....

In the suburbs I have no issue what so ever with 3G. I have a 2nd gen iPhone hence the 3G. I can make my 3G go to 2G/Edge mode which solves the problem most of the time.

It seems the loop itself is the worst. I can be near 600N Michigan area and no problems. The data side is the thing that sucks the most. I can get 1.5-2.5 down and 300k up out in the burbs. In the city I will be lucky if I can get 500k down and 100k up.

It's not the iPhone itself just AT&T and under capacity of the towers. They seem to think they have no problem. If you go to the at&t forums you can see a huge chicago thread all stating the same thing.

500Kbps is perfectly usable on the iPhone. I leave my phone in 3G mode most of the time (I hate charging it) and I rarely see above 500Kbps in my area, but browsing is speedy.

You get a 30-day trial. I suggest you try it and see for yourself. A single user on here who had a bad experience shouldn't dissuade you.

I have a Nokia N95 on ATTM Paygo, and have been very much less than impressed with ATTM's data QoS. I only use the phone for data, but it has frequent problems both in making initial connections and especially in maintaining them over long periods of time (e.g., nav sessions).

So ATTM's network is in my opinion already not really capable of supporting their current sub base, at least where I live.

Unless they have plans to quickly upgrade their network, dropping the iPhone plan $10 and seeing another large influx of subs is just going to make things worse.

New plans

$20 for basic unlimited data, like web browsing, email, YouTube, App Store.
$30 for unlimited data with support for things like SlingBox.

I would take that as the wife and I don't use Slingbox right now. It would be nice to not be spending $60/month just on data.

Re: New plans

I don't think that would hold true. Because you still have to worry about the cap.

Honestly it should be $20 for unlimited data plan, plane and simple. Considering 3g doesn't work everywhere and the places that do, it can be hit or miss. Honestly I use Edge in the city of Chicago because it's more stable then 3g. If the point of the $10 increase was for 3G speeds well I am not seeing it. Then offer some more variations for texting. Maybe $30 gives you unlimited data and messaging.

Integrate texting!

Here's an idea AT&T -- how about including unlimited texting on your iPhone plans again? $20 for unlimited texting is an absolute joke, especially after paying $30 for "unlimited" data...

They never included unlimited texting. The old iPhone plan included 200 texts. I'd be happy if they brought that back though. An extra $15 per month over the old iPhone plan sucks.

Anyone that wants send me a message will be sending email, and not text. Text messaging is as expensive than unlimited data (which would include email).

The expensive data is why I haven't upgraded

3G was quite a price increase ($10 more than EDGE and didn't include texting) and for me EDGE works just fine. My considering the new phone which I'm assuming arrives in June will depend on the data price. Otherwise I will stick with my trust EDGE iPhone.

I still dont have 3g from att in my area. Im not sure id have as big of a problem with the price if i had that as an option. $30 as it is currently is to much, $20 would be more reasonable for sure.
The texting prices are what really needs to be looked at.
They should offer unlimited texting for like 10/15.
They are making a killing off of it. Way overpriced.

I would be happy.....

Just to be able to dial a call and have it connect the FIRST time, and then be able to have that conversation without dropping the call. Sure a price cut would be nice, but I would prefer consistent good call quality.

Am I missing something?

....reporter Olga Kharif suggests that lower data rate plans may be something Apple wants in exchange for extending AT&T's exlusive iPhone contract into 2011...
The best way for Apple to get the iPhone's service/data plans to drop in price would be to not extend the exclusivity. Barring collusion, lets see where the prices settle once we have two or more carriers in the mix.

AT&T would probably lower the plans to keep the exclusivity, unless Apple makes a ridiculous requirement, like free data or something like that AT&T would probably do whatever is told.

BlackBerry has been $30/mo+ for a while...

I'd be surprised if they were considering this.. BlackBerry users, such as myself, have been paying at least $30 extra per month for a BlackBerry data plan, for quite some time, starting with EDGE.

It's $60/mo with tethering, and $45/mo with a BlackBerry Enterprise account.

I guess that I can't be too surprised though, considering the volume of iPhone users, but I'd have to assume that they often use much more bandwidth than your regular BlackBerry user.

Either way, I'm glad that I have a 3G Bold now..

overpriced

from this vantage point, the iphone data plan is overpriced; hence i have a 2nd gen touch in my pocket in addition to my shine which capable handles voice traffic. am surprised how many places i find a wifi connection. that $30/data plan is hardly worth it from here.
