Were you using the center AF point with any expansion or all 45 points? My focus seems to miss a lot when I use center+7

Center point. I found at one point it had jumped down (left) a few notches, but I quickly fixed that). This one, I am sure was at center point only.

When I shoot basketball it usually works fine until they start to get really close to the net in their madness, and then it's hit or miss.

For soccer I also shoot vertically, but tend to have the focus point a few notches down (left) so that it's focusing more where their feet are. For me, this helps keep the focus on the player instead of wandering onto the trees 50 yards behind them.

I've never thought of focusing at the feel. I normally push the point to the right and place it on the face or upper body. I'll have to give your way a try
