Wow, what an extreme close-up. Cool! With your hair comment you have me thinking...what is this called on an insect? Is it a similar protein compound (mainly keratin) to the hair on mammals, or is it something quite different? I really have no clue.

My guess is a moth of some sort. Nice macro

Sue you're correct it is a moth. A Five Spotted Hawkmoth I do believe.

Overhill you got me thinking...and I found...

Hair: One of the structures typically found on a caterpillar. The more correct term for this kind of hair is seta (pl. setae).

Hair pencil: A hair-like structure on the legs or abdomens of some butterflies and moths that is believed to aid in the distribution of pheromones during courtship.

Which means in the insect world, this guy is Elvis!

Awesome shot rdavs - much cuter than spiders.

I also like that you didn't shoot the pin holding it down :^)

Oh- he is very much alive! I photographed him in my light box. After a couple of shots I released him to the outdoors and he flew away!

Very cool.

Which leads to another question: is the setae found on this insect the same that might be found on a spider, like a tarantula?

Same hair as a tarantula is what I was thinking too? My assumption would be that the answer is yes but always remember the comment, 'never assume'. This is a fantastic shot of something rather common, but not common at all seen in this manner. Wow!

Exceptional work! Also, thanx for the information! - I have also wondered about the correct terminology of what appears to be fur on bugs:)
