Sorry to those of you who dislike snakes but I haven't posted a rattlesnake photo in a while, and after all it's almost spring!

Whoa! Snake detail again! 100mm is pretty close to such a beast but it sure makes for a great photo.

Interesting how the sensory pits line up with the eyes - are they connected to the optic nerve?

A beautiful, efficient predator you've got there.

By the way, what happened to the 5D?

Belonging to the pit viper family, rattlesnakes have loreal pits (lateral heat sensory organs), between their eye and nostril on each side of their head. These facial pits let the rattlesnakes to seek and strike in darkness warm objects, such as small animal prey, or even larger animals that could pose a threat.

And the 5D is safe and sound. I use both cameras now. Often taking both out at the same time so I don't need to change out lenses!

I trust the snake was behind some glass? If not, this was an extremely gutsy shot, although 100mm x 1.6 gives you 160mm to work with. So you could have been just out of striking distance - maybe 10 feet?

I love the detail. This is something I'd never get to see so close up. Fascinating.

This is the scariest snake view I've seen yet. Terrific photo!

I usta live in Texas, and those were easily encountered if one went looking for 'em!

Dangerously beautiful creatures. Keep your distance!! ;-)

Wow! Awesome detail. And obvious why they are called 'Pit' vipers.
