 | These two hatch year Red-tails are good buddies. The younger of the two is learning to use his ratchet talon system. When a raptor lands on something like that small branch, the talons lock shut automatically. This helps them catch food and sleep in trees standing up. Only once he puts his full body weight on the palm, will the ratchet system release. His friend is really puzzled by his antics.hey mods · » Friday July 17th, @12:23PM

 | Some additional info: All birds have a built-in "catch and release" locking system for their feet. Google "bird tendons lock". Here's one: »www.enaturalist.org/unit/60/qr hey mods · » Sunday July 19th, @12:27PM
