 | Shot at 1X, this two inch wide blossom more than fills the viewfinder.
The tiny specks are all pollen grains.hey mods · » Monday March 19th, @02:22AM

 | Off camera lighting? I like the subtle shadows. Color was handled well too. Yellow can be very tough for some cameras to handle. hey mods · » Monday March 19th, @07:46PM

 | Thanks for the great comments everyone.
The lighting was straight from the ring flash, no other sources were used. I've noticed the 60D tends to overexpose and clip the red channel far more often than the blue or green channels. I don't know if it's because there's a lot more red in what I like to photograph or if it's a characteristic of the camera. Either way, it makes shooting a flower like this a bit of a challenge. Near the end of my post work on any picture though, I always reset the black & white points in Curves to reduce or eliminate any tint & color correct the image. hey mods · » Monday March 19th, @11:07PM

 | You've done a really nice job at muting the flash. Ring flashes are great, but they tend to over-illuminate the subject. This photo makes me want to go out and buy a ring flash. I did have a 100mm Canon macro, but sold it on ebay a while back. I was happy with the lens, but found its applications limited. I would like to check out the new 100mm macro from Canon, which now has IS and the "L" designation. hey mods · » Wednesday March 21st, @06:56AM

 | Thank you for that.
Just like I found the ring flash to be essential for the lens, now I'm finding the 60D's RGB & Luminance histograms to be critical for the strobe. Like I mentioned before, the red channel always seems to clip first & I'll shoot several times until I get a graph I like. I've since removed the cloth portion of my diffuser because I think it may have been absorbing more of the blue & green channels than the red. Even so, an imbalance persists and I now shoot the majority of my pictures with the strobe dialed down 1 to 2 stops below default. I'm also experimenting with biasing the intensity from one side to the other, which creates shadowing effects. The MR-14EX gives you eight increments to alter the light balance from one side to the other without changing the overall output. The shot ratio above was about 2:1 or 2X stronger on the left side & the overall flash output was about -2. The downside of this strobe is the flimsy design of the control unit. The battery door was designed by Fisher-Price & the mounting base is a plastic embarrassment. My much cheaper Nikon Speedlight has a good, solid metal base where it slides into the hotshoe, whereas the Canon feels like it could break off in your hand. No problems so far though, but I have invested in Sanyo Eneloop rechargeable batteries to feed the power-sucking flash. I also bought the La Crosse BC-9009 recharger to go with the Eneloops, they're an unbeatable combination.hey mods · » Wednesday March 21st, @11:23PM
