Same as always from Google

What more do you expect from Google, lots of hype and media frenzy but nothing really new or exciting.

Not released yet...

The phone is not released yet. How can you make such a claim when nothing has been confirmed. Don't over reach.

Nexus One

Where have you been? It isn't restricted to T-Mobile at all. The specs that have been released so far indicate the Nexus One will work on all 4 of the existing networks.

That is not always true. The Android 2.0 OS is stunning, especially considering the fact that it's newly released. Most of what this phone can do is simply because of the Android 2.1 OS, which can be hacked onto any other Android phone and will be offically released for them soon.

Couple all that with the fact that it's on T-Mobile, it wasn't cheaper than many other Android phones, and the Snapdragon 1GHz processor, while fast, isn't by any means the fastest out, and you get this type of response.

Actually...

Google has been helping with the development of android and revolutionizing pretty much everything on the net...for those who don't see it, maybe your blind or not really a net guru. They have been driving the development of lots of open source projects, and even paying people without getting anything back. They have put alot of work into android as well...which im sure most of the corporate whores dont reallly like to much considering it IS a iphone killer, i dont care if you're an apple affiliate losing money thats the truth. Its sad that people still bash them just because they are afraid of new ideas and losing out on money to there new competition....

Ive been following the development of android since it was announced and have told everyone i know to invest in the manufactures who are developing the phones...give it another year for everyone to realize the potential of android. I would easily shell out $500 for the nexus one considering how badass it is, and im a developer.

What really irks me, is that my Moment came with 1.5, I know there is a 1.6 and 2.0. And who knows when it will be available

Yes, hmm. Not seeing EVDO or Mobile WiMax support here:

Where did you see support for Verizon or Sprint?

Do G1 owners get a bigger discount?

We were the first adopters of the Google Smart phone and now we are left with is a forked never to be updated again phone.

I know the saying early adopters always get burned and what not but seriiously we took a gamble with the Android platform and now we have to upgrde and spend more money just to get the latest features.

I think that is unfair of Google to do the one thing about the iPhone is their OS isn't forked every iPhone can use the latest OS stuff some better than others of course but atleast there are new OS features being added and what not from Apple. Can't say the same for Google.

Re: Actually...

I like where the idea of opening up the GUI guts (of everything from voicemail control to calling mechanisms) to companies not named AT&T, Verizon, Apple, etc. I love how Google Voice could shake up everything. That said, it still doesn't make the rumored Nexus One pricing any more interesting....

Now maybe down the road, when Google starts selling a myriad of cheap, unlocked handsets that all work on LTE we could see something interesting. But right now? Kind of a disjointed, only slightly interesting mess...

I'm not saying it will work, but if your Moment isn't heavily customized by Samsung, you *may* be able to just dump the Android release on it directly from Google. That is how I upgraded my Droid. It even kept the VCast apps store in the Android Market.

What claim? The reviews are from people currently using the phone. The pricing specs are not confirmed yet, but the leaks sound genuine....

I think he was adding the 2 GSM cell carriers in Canada(Bell & Rogers) to T-Mobile & AT&T since the poster was from Canada. But it won't be 3G except on T-Mobile.

Hey Karl - Did you see that T-Mo flashed their network to 7.2mbps today? I'm getting about 3mbps down and 300k up on speed tests on my G1 now.

Complain to the phone manufacturers. Google doesn't make phones. Only provides Android open source code to the builders of the phones.

There were rumors all over twitter yesterday of T-Mo reps saying that G1 owners would get the $179/new line pricing. Not sure if it's true, but it sure would be nice.

Yep, writing something up now. They've made some nice progress since the beginning of 2008. Will be nice to see 21 Mbps HSPA+!

Re: Not released yet...

Lame Karl: Engadget's Joshua is a self proclaimed Apple fanboy and did a very poor "review."

No phone will ever be as good as the iPhone for him.

The bloggers hyped this device. The price however is in line with what is to be expected and it's fair.

You can't expect Google to subsidize hundreds of dollars per device "just because." That thinking is unreasonable to sustain any business model.

The device isn't restricted to T-Mobile USA's network either. It will work in Europe using their 3G band (2100 MHz) and in Canada with WIND. It's quadband GSM/EDGE with WiFi that will work on any GSM network.

Rumors have been swirling over the past 2 days that they will indeed create a similar device that will support the 850/1900 MHz band for NAM.

Naysayers and self-proclaimed journalists of the industry balked at the idea of an iPhone too. AT&T's network is crap in many areas yet the phone still sells extraordinarily well.

Google and T-Mobile just may have a winner. Wait till the press conference is over, buy a device of your own, write a review and then come back here and tell us what you really think.

Re: Nexus One

I was thinking the same thing. But again, even if it's custom made for T-Mobile particular flavor of HSDPA, it won't via anything other than AT&T's EDGE network....

The price is boring, the phone is slightly above standard for a 2010 Android phone, and the carrier support that we know of (T-Mobile only) is not good. If Google announces they intend broad unlocked carrier support including EVDO, or T-Mobile offers some kind of disruptive data plan for the device, then I'll certainly applaud that when they do...

Re: Do G1 owners get a bigger discount?

Your initial assessment is correct. Early adopters always get burned.

But that is simply the price of admission. If you want to be on the bleeding edge, then you're gonna bleed a little.

I've made that decision many times myself. Walk around with the latest whiz bang gadget, or hold off and wait.

When I do make that purchase, it's usually an impulse buy. Usually I don't regret it. But, there are trade offs.

Americans don't understand unsubsidized phone prices

It's amazing how many people are shocked by the price of the phone here especially the unsubsidized version. The status quo is exactly what they priced it at, anybody who has traveled the world understands the full pricing aspect of phones and how it works so I don't understand why Google wouldn't price it on the same level and why people think Google would just sell this loaded phone for dirt cheap.

I don't think Google ever positioned themselves in saying that this device would change handset pricing models or even effect them. I think they are jumping into their own version of the phone to have a space to create and not be having to run through hoops that cell phone providers make them in order to push out releases of Android.

For me i think this is a good entry for google and the relevantly young Android. The phone has a lot of good solid features and shouldn't be forgotten when looking back at this release.
