Comments on news posted 2012-02-29 12:40:56: Time Warner Cable has been talking about a brand change ever since they were spin off from Time Warner back in 2008. Like their DOCSIS 3. ..

Lipstick on a pig

Companies seem to think by rebranding that customers won't associate them to be as bad as they are. "Xfinity" is still Comcast, but Xfinity is a new term without years of hate/resentment attached to it. Cablevision has done this for awhile, calling their product "Interactive/Optimum" or I/O digital cable.

Re: Lipstick on a pig

Well, yeah but if you notice, Time Warner is going from "Roadrunner Standard" to "Time Warner Standard." Sounds a lot less of marketing lingo to me. They're basically going from saying "Hey guys, we're Time Warner Cable, and we sell a service called Roadrunner which runs over our HFC network and is meant to be super quick like the Roadrunner, so the Coyote, DSL doesn't catch up!" to "We're Time Warner Cable, we sell Internet, and here's what we call it"

But I do get where you're going with it though! I'm sure the hatred will still be there when the bill comes.

Either Pepé Le Pew is "the new black" or... oh, it's just TWC.

Old News

They've been talking about this before. They're only doing away with the RoadRunner and the Time Warner brand is they have to PAY for it now since they're not part of Time Warner, Inc.

It would be VERY hard to change everyone to a new email address though; would be smart just to keep those.

And this is another example of why customers should use a 3rd party service for email or their own domain.

Gee

I wonder if this is finally coming about because of swelling up Insight, thus now owning any .rr.com using division, as Bright House docent use the RR name as far as I know.

Typical company BS!

Company has a lousy track record satisfying customers. Do they lift a finger to improve? NO! Instead they simply change their name and continue to be a crap company with a new name!

These companies really think consumers are morons, don't they?

Monopolies don't have customers, they have prisoners.

Wideband

I think it's definitely a good move for them to eliminate the "Wideband" brand. I'm pretty technically inclined and stay up on the news pretty well, but admittedly didn't know what the hell "Wideband" was the first time I started seeing TV commercials for it. Eventually I just made the assumption it was their reference to DOCSIS 3.0, which in all honesty none of their average consumers would know the first thing about.

TWC is no longer a monopoly. They have competition.

I can get UVerse and lose my Tivos or I can use Satellite, and in both cases end up with no fast Internet option. My mother can't even get UVerse. Neither of us have WOW as an option.

You're apparently in Toledo. Perhaps you have options. Many people don't. Nor is the definition of a monopoly a company with no competition.

you don't need U-Verse to get HSI.

You can easily order DSL without getting U-Verse. Would you like a list of DSL companies to order that from? Maybe a list of other providers including Earthlink that offers Cable modem services in TWC service areas. Maybe the number to your local Clear office to get service with them? Also there is LTE with Cellco.

Those are options. Just because you think that TWC is your only option due to you wanting to have Tivo does not work with your HSI claim.

Yes, I can order DSL or wireless, get lower speeds, less reliability (IMHO, but that's subjective), pay a bit less for that, more for my TV service with the bundle gone, and come out with less for about the same price. Sign me up.

The whole package (TV + HSI) is what matters, not one or the other. The Tivo issue is relevant simply because it limits the TV choices to maintain that investment to one company, which affects the pricing for the combination of the two.

Is it a self-inflicted monopoly? Sure, in a sense. But Verizon's FIOS works with cable cards, so there are markets where that competition exists, and this isn't one.

it's about time

I agree with new marketing and calling;
broadband 15/1 and wideband 30/2 etc.
and getting rid of "basic" and "turbo".
not sure what to call wideband 50/5.
tripleband? fatband? superband?

the whole roadrunner mascot nonsense
has no relevance on speed anymore as
customers are far more knowledgeable,
and no longer need any dumb'ing down.

Re: Wideband

And many of their markets don't have DOCSIS 3.0 yet. I can tell you first hand that TWC Maine does not have D3 available. Not to mention their junk equipment. It took three different trips to the service center to get a different modem. All they had were the SA/Cisco DPC 2203 voice/data modems (that are junk) and I finally scored an Ubee AND it had a battery with it as it was brand new. Batteries are important in EMTAs used in elderly households (like my Grandma's house).

Licensing

RoadRunner characters are copyrighted by Warner Bros and they have to license them. They should just license the Xfinity brand instead. Or even better, just merge with Comcast since they have no interest in metered data billing and they seem more interested in DOCSIS 3.0 upgrades than TWC. I can get internet speeds up to 105/10 (currently have 50/10) with Comcast at my house. At my Grandma's house in Maine, we can only get up to 15/1 and that is by subscribing to RoadRunner Turbo for $5 extra per month.
