Watches

I don't get the point of spending money on a smart watch. A smartphone can already do everything a watch can, on a much bigger screen, with far more features, processing power, etc. And like most modern electronics, these smart watches will have to be replaced every 2-5 years. Sounds like a massive waste of money.

The only watch I will ever wear is a real mechanical watch that will last my lifetime.

Not even the slightest leak for the iWatch...

Pretty incredible that there hasn't been a single leak.
Probably because it hasn't been sent for large scale production.

With the original iPhone, it was announced on January 9, 2007 but not launched/released until June 29, 2007.

Re: Watch battery life

Im betting one iphone 6 will be about the same size as the iphone 5 and the other just the tiniest bit bigger maybe .2 inch increase. I so hope they pull something that stupid and go out of buis im so sick of their garbage it is not even funny. Locked down over priced obtuse break the screen and watch the mother board fail with it. Tired of their junk plain and simple.

Waste the money

I've been wearing digital watch for about 10 years. its battery is still running. If Iwatch battery lasts for at least 2 years without charging, then I buy it.

Re: Watches

Smartwatches will be a convenience bordering on luxury accessory, for those who want access to info without pulling out phone from pocket/purse - and will be good for fitness. I plan to get one, probably the Moto360 or the new LG round watch announced. And I haven't worn a watch since a kid.

Will be surprising if Apple does a flat square watch as the latest 'leaks' imply. Would think they would do round or curved screen. The square ones out now look a little dorky.

The $300 pricepoint is doable for first couple gens but would expect under $100 by 3rd Gen and will be more commonplace, especially Android based. $50 smartwatches wouldn't be surprising in under 5 years.

It seems to depend on the brand. I was given a Pebble Steel for my birthday and I get about 5 days between charges. As it is a black-and-white screen it does not have the power consumption of the color displays.

Still it will be interesting to see the benchmark that Apple establishes. The smart watch market kind of reminds me of the PC market prior to IBM's entrance. That computer pretty much set the baseline for what we have now.

Re: Waste the money

I'd be OK with a few days battery life in exchange to see who is calling and other info w/out having to pull phone out of pocket. But I'd want wireless charging (moto360) and futures ones may have supplemental self-charging.

iWatch

Why is it so hard to make a standard watch with a security token system built-in? Both of these device types can go years without a battery change but nobody has put out a device which can do both with the same wearable interface.

Make this device and allow it to contain multiple tokens and I'll buy it.

RE: New iPhones, iWatch to Debut September 9

I just don't see how people are still excited about smartphones. I was really excited about them 5 or 10 years ago when they were just starting to make an appearance, but now it's just speed bump after speed bump. I'm still using my Galaxy S3 even though my contract has been up for a while. I just haven't seen anything compelling enough to make me need to upgrade. I have a feeling the thing that will make me upgrade will be cyanogenmod dropping support for the GS3 rather than the release of the Galaxy S 6 or 7.

Another trademark battle brewing

With Swatch this time and their trademarked brand iSwatch. They already told Apple the names are too close. But Apple feels they can railroad anyone else much like they tried to ignore the original iPhone trademark holder.

Tired of seeing their massive success? Going to have to take a seat and keep stewing in your own venom for a very long time. I don't see them going anywhere anytime soon.

Simple solution there. Don't buy their "junk" if you don't like it.

Now for the iOS 8 jailbreak speculation!

Not a fanboy, but like iOS over pure Android. How millions could use TouchWiz is beyond me. Hoping the iPhone 6L is the real deal and coming out on the 9th. Now all we need to wait for is the iOS 8 untethered jailbreak.

Hear! Hear!
I agree with you whole heartedly.... too many people use this forum to air their pet peeves/prejudices. If you don't like it, simply don't buy it -- as a consumer you have that choice.

Just remember, there may be others who do like it and will buy it -- just respect their choice as you expect them to respect yours!

It's not good to get emotional over something you can't control. I've heard the same type of remarks about tv shows on here.

Unless someone is forcing you to buy products you don't like I don't see the reason.
Did you miss out on buying the stock?

Actually i don't buy apple. I work on cell phones for a living. I can fix any of them that can be fixxed. Apple i phone 5 series (all of them) have a common failure that when dropped and the screen breaks it also damages the connectors on the mother board that the lcd etc fasten to. I have had them come completely off a couple times. Other times you get a partial display or partial touch.

Yeh well people are getting tired of their displays that are smaller than other phones out there. There are a few customers who come through here that have already stated that if the 6 is not at least as big as the s5 they are done with apple.

I don't think the technology is ready for what I would want it to do. Other than that I don't see the purpose of it.
But companies are good at selling things most don't really need but think they do.

interesting cause me and my wife both have dropped our phones several times and never broke the screen let alone damaged any connectors the worst that has happened is one of the corners got a small ding... I have had every iPhone thats been out except the iPhone 3GS and dropped every one of them atleast a few hundred times my 2 year old daughter gets ahold of it and throws it across the room. Yet my work S5 first time dropped it it broke.. Then my work development phone a Nokia Lumia icon also broke but not as bad as the S5...

So your trying to tell me that they do not break? Ill call bs on that one. I have seen the things fall off peoples laps getting out of the car and break all to hell. plain old 3 to 5s and all in between does not matter. Of all the iphones the toughest one is the 3 the next is the 4c then 5 and 5s the 5c has a flush mounted screen the 5 and 5s almost flush same for the 3. But the 4 series is raised and exposed with only a cheap flimsy plastic bezel to protect it.

No phone on the market other than the casio rubberized survives face drops very well. Some can take corner and edge some what better. But you drop that phone face down from shoulder height and see how well it holds up. In fact here enjoy the vid Poor 5s busted on edge drop samsung no broken screen 5s busted lcd s5 only glass on front facing hmm. BTW youtube is filled with these vids all give sim results.

»www.youtube.com/watch?v= ··· 6Q1aQcHc

BTW cost of glass repair s1 to 4 and likely 5 (to new not had one yet) around 60 to 65 varies depending on glass cost. Glass only is possible. iphone 4 series to 5s glass only is not possible in practice. As a i want to try and save money and understand i may end up paying for both glass and lcd assembly well ill try it even with a extreme chance of failure. I do samsung galaxy line glass only consistently and nearly daily.

Edited for mass typos. Key board fouling up on laptop

Actually the s5 is not that huge. It is big yeh but not a giant. Look at what for example samsung tends to do they make their flag ship phone then a few weeks at most after they have a mini version and a more water etc resistant active which is also smaller.

S3 S4 S5 all have mini versions. Im sure their S6 phone will as well.

Now there are allot of phones i will never buy after working on them. Pretty much any phone that does not have a removable battery or is "unibody" Now no iphone falls in to that category.I will not buy a phone that is locked down such as iphones. Yeh carriers lock their phones but on android it is easy to get them unlocked even if it costs money and that is not always the case. To unlock a iphone requires you to jailbreak it and jailbreaking is not reliable. On most android phones and devices (amazon excluded) Rooting androids version of the jail break is as permanent as you want. It is persistent and does not get undone even by ota updates.A jail broken phone even if un-tethered is undone if you update your iphone and at some point you likely WILL have to update it do to a crash that requires you to update as the only way to fix it. The bricking can and does happen with android. But even if it does you can re root if you have to update to get out of the boot loop soft bricking.

Again amazon is the exception to the rule with androids. I will not buy amazon any thing even though i do have and love my kindle fire that is rooted and is using a custom rom in the form of cm11 m9. It is now just kindle hardware with no amazon junk any place on it.

I will not buy any phone that requires me to buy or even download a app to for example delete all photos all contact or all of any thing else. Apple is defo in this category and in fact it is the only phone or tablet that fits this category. To delete all photos on iphone you have to do them 1 at a time or jump through a whole lota hoops and maybe you get lucky and get them all deleted.

There are many other phones i have worked on that i would not own. I could list dozens of them. Samsung is the one phone that i would own pretty much any of their products. I look at ease of repair ability. And samsung always scores fairly high 7 to 8 some times 9 on i fix its site. I products consistently score low.And what costs them points is a big turn off for e. So it is not just the score high or low that is a turn off for me but also what cost them points. I could not care any less about a battery that is soldered with 2 wires to the board. That is a 30 second repair/replacement. But when i have to take out about 30 screws yeh big turn off iphone 4 all variants. 5 series is a nice change of pace but again the mother board connectors is a big huge issue. Getting the screen off the phone is quite easy. Just that the connections are poorly fixed to the board. I love the iphone 5 bottom dock connection the charger port/data cable design is imo top notch it is nice and deep with allot of contact area and redundancy only one side is needed for charging and data transfer.Though it is prone to collecting pocket lint. That is nothing that 2 seconds of time can't take care of.

Any love for the iPod Touch?

I bought an iPod Touch 5G a few years ago and I really like the polish of Apple iOS especially compared to the garbage that Android was up until about earlier this year. But I'm thinking of jumping ship for several reasons

- Bigger Screen: My brother got an off contract S3 to use as a media device and I am jely over that big screen Apple needs to step up their game and just admit that people want larger screens on their phones and media devices
- Ease of moving music on/off: This one isn't that big of a deal but it is a nitpick...I have CopyTransManager, so at least I can drag and drop music onto the device, but what that doesn't let me do is get music off of the device. It'd be nice if Apple would just open up the Music folder just like the Pictures folder is. When you plug in your device, you can get to your pictures right there, no need for any special software.
- Removable Storage: Well at least with my 64 GB iPod I haven't filled it up yet, but I still like Removable Storage though...
- Removable Battery: Almost all Android devices have this. Apple needs to get with the game
- Resale value: Yep, Apple products do maintain their resale value way better than Android, I have a 64 GB iPod Touch and I estimate I could get about $200 for it, that should be enough to cover the cost of the phone I'm looking at getting (Sharp Aquos Crystal) as well as an SD Card

If they unveil a new iPod Touch and if the screen is big enough (and the price is right), I might stay on, but the way it's looking now, that Sharp Aquos Crystal for $149 is looking pretty sweet But on the other hand...back into the so-called "Android Ghetto" ? They've improved it a TON lately, but still, life in the iOS Gated Community has been pretty smooth these past few years. We'll see what Apple unveils...

You couldn't pay me to use a five inch tablet. I will use my phone when out because that is all I have with me. But I would never use my phone at home. I will use my tablets which are seven inches and larger.
