Quality?

I know quality is subjective.

Let me ask what are the available bitrates, codecs, resolutions?

halve the price and drop the sports

I'm waiting for dish to wake up to the fact that most cord cutters don't watch sports,
and offer a $10/mo service full of all the junk cable tv stations most of us don't miss.

remember, all these stations still get to shove commercials down your throat,
so $10 is expensive considering they gain access to an all new set of eyeballs,
so it's no wonder all these low rated garbage channels are piling into this deal.

On demand

If they had AMC on demand I'd be all over it.

That's great

All I got was $5 added to my Dish bill for the lowest basic package I can get with 99% of the channels I watch things on. I guess I should be happy it's less than $60 for a bunch of commercial filled channels I don't watch.

I seriously think I could just drop it, live with the local channels ota, and go without the few shows I find interesting but not critical to my existence. Life is finite and it just seems like there's more things intended on squandering it away everyday.

If they get all of their content On Demand, I'll be tempted to jump from Traditional TV/DVR. But also want Chromecast support.

Actually, sports are the only thing still keeping me subscribed to cable. With this option I can finally have a choice!

The package I would be most interested in if they added is:

an Educational package including: Discovery, TLC, Animal Planet, and National Geographic.

Re: Quality?

SD or HD, does it really matter? People get so hung up on 4k, 1080p/I blah blah blah instead of the channels themselves. I see nothing offered that I don't already get thru PLAYON.TV. No sub fee's since I've already got a lifetime sub. So, does it really matter what codecs they are using?

Discovery and TLC have a lot of reality garbage these days. Dunno if that'd qualify as educational.

Not as good as HD w/cable or one of the satellite companies, but very, very good for a web stream. Maybe the best I've seen.

I was watching ESPN for a brief period and it was actually 60fps (which is rare outside of YouTube), and looked to be a reasonably high Mbit-rate, if I was to guess, somewhere around 5 to 7Mbit.

Re: halve the price and drop the sports

so you just proved my point; people who already cut the cord, didn't stick around cable for their sports fix.
so now that we are sports free, wtf would you expect us to want to pay for it again in the form of a stream.

I have to agree, what has turned me off of Sling TV is the recreation of "the packages" which help to maintain the high cost. I also could care less about ESPN and would rather not pay for it and would guess it is likely a fair amount of that core package cost.

What are the stream limits? I have 5 screens in my basement for game days when we throw parties, can I stream on all of them?

Re: On demand

The On Demand is what keeps me from subscribing. (That, and the one stream per household rule.) Since we cut the cord, my youngest son is upset over losing Cartoon Network. Having On Demand Cartoon Network and other channels would be really nice. We'll make due without it, of course, but the more on demand they get, the more tempting it becomes. (If they had a no-sports tier for $10-$15 a month and multiple streams per house that would be even more tempting.)

It's been discussed on DSLR repeatedly - the ESPN channels add ~$9 to SlingTV's own cost (not what they collect from subscribers).

Re: The Sling TV Press Releases

H2 is now on it?
That's cool.

There's still one thing with the service that I don't care for, and that is the fact that there's no way to really record what you watch. Is there even a way to use a VCR, let alone DVD recorder, let alone component HD, let alone schedule anything on, say media center??? ...doubtful...

Welcome to the future. It's encumbered by HDCP/DRM.
Can't wait for 4k to really take off and be even more locked down, and have no way to capture via any analog methods.

You can only watch one stream at a time. If you want to want another stream concurrently you need to have another subscription.

If you have the internet D/L speed (roughly 6Mb/sec min )and a good route to the servers then max HD resolution is 720p.
Sound is stereo only. 720p max and stereo only is the same as Hulu+ BTW.

Maybe, just MAYBE they're marketing this to people who haven't already cut the cord?

Maybe you're not the target demo? Maybe the target demo is much larger than your demo?

WEIRD.

Re: Quality?

I have an AC router loaded with Shibby Tomato which allows bandwidth monitoring. It looks like our stream uses 3.5-4.5Mbps, depending on the program material and channel and I have the Amazon Fire Stick set for 720p. No idea if there is a better 1080p stream that uses more but the 720p looks good. Most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between it and regular HD cable. I have no idea how to see the actual stream rate - we use SlingTV on the aforementioned Fire TV and several Rokus.

20 Bucks for 1 stream?

Why get sling, when Hulu+ offers 1 stream at one time per account. For way less then Sling. Heck with 2 Hulu+ accounts, you still are at a lower price point then Sling.
I don't watch enough sports to justify 20 [or 25] bucks for just one stream. Add the Playboy chann, or HustlerTV, then maybe.

Heck if they were to offer a package for 30 bucks, that allows dual streaming, and on demand service [or a DVR type service], then maybe. As that would be a 10 dollar savings over 2 separate accounts.

Re: halve the price and drop the sports

in what reality does it makes sense to motivate subs to pay for the same package
they already buy through a different medium re-seller - none that i'm familiar with.

all stream initiatives are mainly to recapture cord cutters, all considering cord cutting,
pirates, and those seeking more cross platform portability (tv pad phone on any isp),
few of those are also cabletv subscribers.

The reality where the company selling it wants more revenue streams from the same customer.

Why wouldn't Dish want to sell a SlingTV subscription to a current Dish subscriber?

Again, blaming the cable provider for this. Stop it.

They have ESPN on there and make you pay for it because that's what Disney wants so that they can offer other Disney owned channels on SlingTV.

If they didn't offer ESPN on there, they wouldn't have the other Disney owned channels to offer in the package, making it less attractive.

Blame the content providers for their all or nothing ways. Cable providers don't want to pay for ESPN for all subscribers just as much as all subscribers don't want it. But that's the only way they're getting the other channels at the moment.

The only thing I watch in stereo is sports. I would never go back to stereo for a movie or even some of the newer tv shows. Why on earth would they skimp there? Compared to video it takes so much less bandwidth.

Re: On demand

The one stream per household rule has to be there. Since you can use this service anywhere and not just in your house, how exactly would they tie multiple streams to a household?

No one who wants to use it outside of their house would want that.

And they can't really tie it to the IP you are using because what if someone is at home watching TV but someone else is traveling for work and watching it in a hotel? Same household, but 2 different locations.

So because that would be possible, nothing would stop someone from buying a subscription and giving logins to multiple friends that don't live with them.

What analog method, exactly, would you capture 4k with? You certainly wouldn't have it in 4k format if captured via analog means.

Why would they offer a $30 dual stream when people would seemingly be using that to just have 2 $15 plans?
