College students

Must be all the college students disconnecting all the TV/internet bundles.

Many times it's cheaper to buy Internet with TV than without.

I think college students are not a big factor in it all. Some live in dorms that often provide TV and internet on campus, and those that do not most often live in a room-mate situation, with anywhere from 3 to 5 students.... if there is television available, its ONE subscription that the house shares, and most often that is also the case with internet. Other students rent a single room with a family, and they too don't have their own sub, they usually share the one that is already there. The amount of college students that have 100% their own rental address without sharing anything is fairly small, most can't afford it.

Most of the cord cutters I personally know are people whose kids (often teens) are no longer interested in TV, or have moved out, leaving them with a high TV bill of stuff they themselves do not watch, and the kids have moved out and barely watch TV when they come back. In local Facebook groups I am on, the cord-cutting question comes up from time to time, and it is almost always people in their 30s and 40s. Some have no kids, others have teenagers that aren't interested, others again are empty nesters and realize the TV isn't on any more.

Then there is the "cord never" group. My nephew is one of those. He moved out and is on his own in the world, but he doesn't subscribe to any form of television any more.... he gets his news and music from the internet, movies from Netflix, and a lot of his entertainment actually comes from youtube.

Many times it's cheaper to buy Internet with TV than without.

This is true, bundled offers and all.... and that puts an interesting twist on cord cutting: How many of those didn't want TV in the first place, may not even have it connected, but only have it because the internet is cheaper?

Cable companies have been using this very tactic to show the least amount of loss on cable subscribers, it would have been a lot worse if TV+Internet was always a higher price than just Internet.

The cable companies pad the numbers in such a way it is "less shocking" to investors, but the harsh reality is that besides those who don't need TV but are "forced" to take it because of price.....there are many more people who pay for the bare minimum, but barely turn it on any more, and only have it for the convenience of news and a local sports team.

The numbers of people who no longer watch cable TV vs the number of people who actually cut it..... is a lot higher. I haven't done the polling on it of course, but I am willing to bet it is significantly higher than those making the leap.

Case and point: People want "on-demand", not "linear" programming any more. And if the cable companies aren't offering that in any significant way, people will switch.

And they are switching at the rate of a million customers a year now, so the industry.... kinda needs to wake up already.

I would totally do Vue if they had my locals and not just on-demand.

Re: College students

Comcast keeps its video disconnect rate down by giving free basic tv service to its new Broadband Internet customers. You can't beat free.

Re: College students

most college students dont live on their own. most are dorm(which provide cable + internet) or with mom and dad, or with a few roommates and $20 extra for cable isnt so bad then.

I have Directv and the only thing I watch anymore is news, weather and sports. There isn't anything else worth watching. I only have a DVR so I can record local newscasts but my mother watches a lot more shows and movies than I do so I have the Choice Xtra package (I think you need that anyways to get the Weather Channel).

There is one ad for a certain prescription drug that is so annoying that I hope dangerous side effects are discovered (not wishing bad things on anyone but would like to see the drug pulled off the market) and I start seeing the ads for ambulance chasing lawyers advertising lawsuits over that medication.

I've taken drugs that have had lawsuits, didn't have the side effects but gained a boatload of weight taking it.

Cord cutter in 2014 and haven't looked back since. The ONLY thing I miss is the Tennis Channel as I love to watch (play) tennis. Yes Roku has it but I don't have the money yet to subscribe.

Re: College students

It really depends on the college. At land grant colleges, which are in smaller cities, it is quite common for students to have their own small studio or 1 bedroom apartments. In the bigger cities its far more likely for students to be living back home. Only a small fraction of students live in dorms, with the exception of schools like Harvard where almost all students live in dorms. Back when I was living in the dorms, cable was an add on, and this was before there was even Youtube, so most students signed up (OTA reception was pretty much nonexistent). They also didn't have the bandwidth for streaming, as 5,000 students were sharing 45 mbps. You do the math, and there wouldn't even have been capacity for every student to listen to online radio at once. Its probably different today though. My friends that work at my college tell me that they now include cable in the dorm rent, which is ironic given that cord cutting is getting more viable, and a lot of dorm rooms have a Playstation, so Vue could be a cheap alternative.

Add Kodi to your FireTV. You'll find the best kodi channels doing a google search

Re: College students

Well it's basically all the industries now, whether that be the music industry, movie industry, television industry or telecommunications (aka the Internet) industry. From what I can see they still think it's the 1980s and 1990s. It's the 21st Century. You either adapt, or you die.

It would put a smile on my face to see every old, withered, angry white senior aged man who holds a high seat of power in both the corporations and government step down and pass the torch. They are completely out of touch. Then you have the "cord always" people (mostly old people in their 50s to 80s) who can't live without traditional cable. Big government and people like Hilary Clinton are fixated on this older group of people. And basically, I see little if any support for younger people, especially those kids in college.

The future is not looking bright so far.
