Re: I got two in the mail just yesterdayWe get these all the time because we host and own so many domain names. We had a couple of faxes as well which look official, please fill in your information her and fax it for renewal etc...
At the end of the day, we know that Register.com is our registrar and that anyone else out there sending us mail is just trying to make a buck from people that panic.

I got three of those mailers last month. I just rolled my eyes and ignored them. From work, I'm already used to getting offers disguised as bills, or calls checking shipping information for orders I never placed.
DRA must be counting (hard) on folks not paying attention.

Re: I got two in the mail just yesterdayYou know, I read all these posts, and I feel all your guys are in the business, and thats why you are throwing all the negative publicity towards competition in the field. Whats the worst you guys can do by switching to this DRoA company anyway? Most likely, the every day person will save money renewing with them, as their rates are generally lower than the big 3's. You say they are annoying and that the mailouts are being misinterpreted, well, I've got news for you, NSI and Register.com have done worse to me in charging me rediculous rates in the past. Not to mention their sub-par customer service. Why don't you people visit the ICANN forum and see who is really getting the most complaints? Its not DRoA, its NSI. In case you've never been there, the forum is here: » forum.icann.org/regxfer/

Re: I got two in the mail just yesterdayCompetition is good. Deception is bad. I get calls from my clients asking "why am I getting this *bill* from DRoA?" "Why do I have to pay more?" DRoA's marketing tactics are deceptive in my opinion. That comes across to me as a company that is desperate and willing to do anything to get into your pocket. Show's me their focus is on the bottom line and not the customer. That's why I won't switch. Why doesn't DRoA use that same ink and paper to tells us why their services are better, more affordable and how their support is better than all others?? If they used that approach instead of sending me something that makes it appear I owe them money, I would consider using their services. First impressions are everything. DRoA did not do a good job with me.
|
| | | | | |
Re: I got two in the mail just yesterdayYou've got a point there.
I'm convinced though that their bottom line is the customer.
I did renew several domains with their canadian counterpart, and believe me, if DRoA are anything like the canadian office, customers should give them a chance.
If they hadn't sent me the notice in the mail, I'd still be paying NSI $35 USD a year. NSI never would have taken the time to mail me (first class) to give me such a low price offer.

In case you missed the point of this thread.. I don't want to be SPAMed for business or private reasons. I don't care about competition, I welcome it. But don't send me email or mail at home when I don't ask for it.

Re: I got two in the mail just yesterdayI don't remember if they came first to commercial or personal registered accounts (domain registrar accounts) in my case but I suspect it was for the commercial domains. My commercial NSI registered account info brings in floods of postal spam. The registrars haven't really dealt with any of this by updating an old system that broadcasts your information to anyone who wants it for whatever reason.

I get these in the mail all the time too AND the e-mails. It's very confusing for some people, because they do look like bills. I sent them an e-mail asking them to stop sending the unsolicited e-mails and telling them nobody requested the transfers. They were actually very nice in their response and apologized. Go figure. For that domain at least... As for the snail mail versions, they keep coming.

Add me to the list...only it wasn't for a currently registered domain, but a solicitation for a .info TLD registration. It came via fax and looked quite pretty with all the tiny "legal type" all over.
Whatever. | |

I've gotten these via email too...cracks me up.
I file them the same place I file other UCE...even though they claim:
"This is not unsolicited commercial email"

I live hereI'm almost ashamed to be living in the same city as these folks (at least their mailing address). I too have received offers to transfer my domains' registrations to these people (and I use that term loosely). I just love how they put their domain name in their "bill;" they immediately went into my /etc/mail/deny file...so in other words, I refuse all email from these folks.
I'm quite happy with inexpensivedomains.com, thank you very much.

GUYS!! send those back!!!!Guys, DONT throw those away.. You can't hurt them that way.. use the paid postage envelopes. put some junk it there and send it back... Make them pay for every since mail. I usually put junk mail from other companies in those envelops. Same thing with those telemarketers. Just put them on hold for as long as you can. That's the only way to hurt them. Waste their time like how they waste yours.

IllegalToo late. Corporations thought of that one, and you will most likely get nailed for mail fraud...Give that it contains information traceable back to you. [text was edited by author 2002-03-01 13:04:44]

HmmmmAnd I thought I was the only one who did that!
I usually pull the recyclable stuff out and write something to the effect of "stop sending non-recyclable junk mail" on the glossy crap, seal up the postage paid envelope and chuckle while I drop it in the mail box!
Dave
P.S. I was duly impressed by the American Flag motif of this mailing. Interesting to note they sent me 3 separate mailings for each of 3 domains I registered at the same time. That's gotta cost some money... [text was edited by author 2002-03-01 15:27:23]

i got 5 in the last weekas a small webhost, i keep getting them
and they are almost dire in wording, they sound like if i dont send them money ill lose my service!
i was very tempted to call ICANN and DirectNIC, and report them, seeing as they are trying to steal business from DIRECTNIC.

Re: i got 5 in the last weekEven thought they technically can't do anything about it you should really report this sort of behavior to ICANN / InterNic as well. »www.internic.net/cgi/registrars/proble..[?] ICANN serves only in a technical coordination capacity, but their charter is to: quote: "preserve the operational stability of the Internet; to promote competition; to achieve broad representation of global Internet communities; and develop policy through private-sector, bottom-up, consensus-based means."
I think controlling this sort of behavior on the part of registrars fits into the scope of their charter. As many of the registrars operate outside of the US it is hard for the "consumer law enforcement authorities" to do much about this in many cases. I believe that ICANN / InterNIC should be encouraged to adopt a policy prohibiting misleading behavior and deceptive practices of this nature.

Got it tooI have to admit that the offer was tempting, 1 year renewal for $25, and 2 years for $40. After thinking about it, I said to myself: "Why would Register.com (the registrar with which I originally registered my domain name) give away my domain name to someone else?" Then I read this, and felt good I didn't fill out that paperwork.
|
| | |
Re: Got it tooAll this information is readily available to everyone on the Internet. A simple whois lookup will reveal all contact name and address information, as well as domain expiry information. So, really, they're doing a massive check for soon-to-be-expired domain names, then mailing to them.
Register.com had nothing to do with this, trust me.

I just got one of those letters too and just thought my registrar had upped the prices. So I tore it up and threw it away. I would've realized it was a different company if I hadn't been talking to someone as I was quickly glancing over the letter. ;o) As far as $25/yr being cheap, I find that pretty steep actually. One of the two registrars I'm currently using is only $8.95/yr and is even less if you pay for multiple years. » www.godaddy.comI hope no one gets suckered in by these clowns. =o(

Re: Got it tooWhat is the other registrar you are using? I am currently moving out of Godaddy because they are nickel and diming services, like URL forwarding that I get from » www.Stargate.com for free. Let alone the fact that when I tried to sell a domain, GoDaddy asked for a $49.95 charge! It's free with Stargate.

| | | | |
Re: Got it tooThe other registrar I use is » www.allwest.comI'm not sure what they charge for the other services, but I haven't had any problems with my domain through them.

We're getting these in Canada, tooUnder the name "Domain Registry of Canada". Given that I've only had my domain for a year, when I saw the bill I went nuts until I saw the fine print saying that "this is not a bill". Phaugh. Don't these losers have anything better to do?

Re: We're getting these in Canada, tooYou are nuts, the people over at DRoC were extremely helpful and friendly, not to mention they save me a lot of money compared to those bastards at NSI.
They picked up the phone right away, and walked me through the transfer process.
Thats what I call superior customer service.
Dont smash them, cause you just dont have the facts.

Killed him on one host, and popped up on anotherI got an invoice from Internet Domain Services with UK postage and unreadable postmark. Return address on phony invoice was PO Box 1824, New York, NY 10028. That right there was a red flag. I knew that my domain was already paid up into the future. Get this: We have created this site to make it easy and swift for you to submit payment to us on a secure server. This uses encryption technology to prevent your personal details or credit/debit card information being illegally obtained by any third party. So what was this secure technology? Not https, but just plain old http using Matt's formmail.pl script. I sent full details about Richard Bradshaw's domain-payments.com scam to one web host who dropped them like a hot potato. But they simply moved to another web host who doe not care. His domain registrar TUCOWS apparently does not care who he rips off either. Apparently he has a new PO box: Registrant: Internet Domain Services P.O. Box 929 Bedford, TX 76095 US Domain Name: DOMAIN-PAYMENTS.COM Administrative Contact: Bradshaw, Richard admin@domain-payments.com P.O. Box 929 Bedford, TX 76095 US 000-000-0000
