I doubt they upgraded their infrastructure one iota, since the price isn't going up. Yet.
Quite the contrary. A lot of infrastructure changes have been implemented. They spent countless millions replacing their Cisco UBRs with the new Cadent C4s alone. Also they replaced literally thousands of non-DOCSIS modems with DOCSIS 1.0 (1.1 and 2.0 capable) modems.

Well if your afraid of a price hike do this.
Comcast stock is around 30 dollars right now. Instead of getting their service buy 2 stocks of Comcast a month. Then you can get rich along with them.

I just find it hard to believe that comcast will give something for nothing.
Why would they raise prices? i think china crisis said it best
said by china crisis:
Comcast is $42.95 for 3mb/256 by end of year for HSI if you have basic cable TV.
I doubt the price will increase, they are raising caps to compete with DSL. You don't compete by raising your prices.

ut oh, too late

and I just signed up for Verizon DSL, the plan I will use (freedom/local package) lowers the monthly cost to 29.95/mo . I did ATT/Comcast for a few years, now its time to go for a cheaper service. I just dont need the speed. Its the money thing for me. Now to figure out how to cancel Comcast Internet..... =8-P

Re: Charter, Are You Paying Attention

said by wdoa:
Charter's views time and time again are that they don't care what any other cable provider is offering because they are not competing against them.
And therein lies the problem. No competition, so they can do whatever they damn well please. They should be made to allow other cable companies to sell services similar to the way the phone companies have to sub-lease their DSL lines. So, if I want Comcast in Fort Worth because I think Charter doesn't provide adequate service or charges too much, I can go with Comcast.

IMO cable companies know where they can exploit the lack of competition and a) charge more, b) offer less, c) provide less than adequate service, or d) all of the above.

Grumble Grumble Grumble

Wow - maybe we're a little too demanding. I know, I know - Comcast hasn't been the best provider. And we need to be vigilant as consumers. I'm not defending Comcast, nor saying their service is a great value, nor saying any of us are idiots (well...maybe some of us...), but we all need to be realistic, too.

So for the average, stupid user like myself, I can't really find any reason why I should complain about this. The price is the same and my downstream speed will almost double. Why should I get mad about that?

The upstream speed grumblers have a sermi-valid point, but at least wait to start complaining about price increases until they actually happen.

Why?

Why not expand the service area of their cable internet service instead of going for higher speeds. Lets see..spend money to expand and have more customers OR increase speeds and have the current users use more of the system and not get more money. Does not seem like a good business model for the long run.

There are ways around that.

Pay yearly. $472.45 will get you prepaid up for a year with a month free. I know others who have no cable TV but pay yearly for the internet who want the bundled price.

Re: Concrap

I would like WOW, but they suck when it comes to rolling out. I live in Grand Rapids, MI and they have no plans to expand beyond Detroit. Therefore, they aren't a competitor to everyone in MI. In fact, they are only a competitor to those who live in Detroit.

Only after people stop abusing the upload speeds. Until users are more bandwidth conservative, you won't see those speeds. People leave P2P running 24/7 sharing gigs of data, ignore the TOS and run servers, and so on. I would love more upload, but there are people who just don't care and would abuse it.

Re: hip, hip, hooray

im with the people below...i had comcast and barely got 800 kbs here in Evanston, Illinois from 7pm-12am. During the day I was of course getting optimal 2200/217 but could not stand the bi-polarness of my connection. I've raised this to tech support literally over 10 times. and they gave me the same response each time..."looks fine on our end." needless to say I am now happily with SBC Ameritech where my connection speed night and day is posted below:

Re: Too little too late and still not enough!

actually comcast's advertised speed is 1.5 but the config file your modem gets from them is 1.8. They advertised 1.5 because with a 1.8 config you'll see closer to 1.5 more often. If they set a 1.5 config on the modem you'll see 1.2 more.

Re: What Good Is It If ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?:

Frankly, the best connection I ever had was an SDSL provided by Northpoint (768/768 for $50). That was awesome and rock solid.

Once you get to 1.5 MBps, who cares about having more downstream bandwidth? Most sites won't load up much faster, and it's not like you can download night and day with the caps coming down the road. I'd be a lot more interested by uploads increase which is where the bottleneck is on my connection. And by the way, SBC is increasing my upload to 256 (for $30 a month, what a deal).

HOPE PRICES WILL STAY THE SAME

I really really hope that comcast won't krank up the prices for their HSI.
right now im paying 57$ a month, and 684$ a year.
Wow, i guess they have enought money from 10 people to buy verizon.lol
With the speed going up from 1.5(im getting 1.7 right now) to 3mbits, it will bring more people to comcast, because before they probably would get like a 2.5 or 2mbits for a price around that(excluding upload).
After Linden NJ had a strange downtime where tv didn't work either, my speed went up from a average of 1.53mbits to 1.7 which got me thinking about this..
Will comcast raise the speeds little by little or just boost it up right away..hmm..interesting

I would also prefer more upload as opposed to more DL, but I'll take watever I can get. More upload would be a lot better for my XBox live though.

I haven't seen one of these commercials in a while, but it used to really chap my hide to see that father and son videoconferencing and playing some boxing game...because at the time the up speed in my area was 128k. Even at 256, that's not nearly enough for the quality of video they showed in that ad.

(I'm not complaining about the dowload speed increase though)

3mb?

That would be nice, but so would the 1.8mb we're supposed to get now.

Here in Chicago, Comcast has had MISERABLE speed problems since late August.

Still better than Verizon's 128Kbit upload! Wish they get with the speed, upload wise.

Re: Why?

They are expanding in my city...unfortunately, just not where I live (yet).

More important however is the Pro situation -- who the hell would sign up for Pro now if the new standard downstream speed is 3 Mbps? If they want to keep their customers happy (which seems doubtful) then they'll upgrade Pro to something like 5 or 6 Mbps downstream. A faster upstream for either standard or Pro, or both, would also seem logical...but probably too logical, considering that's also something which would keep customers satisfied.

Re: HOPE PRICES WILL STAY THE SAME

I just got Comcast HSI 1.5Mbps/2-something about 3 days ago and i'm really happy with it so far. I guess maybe I don't expect much because I got HSI after being fed up with DIRECWAY satellite service (1 sec latency!!) and because I just found out that my area just made HSI available. Anyway, I was a little worried about the speed because I didn't know how much 220 Kilobytes per second could handle. It turns out to be fine, but I could really use the extra 1.5Mbps. I wanted to get Comcast Pro, but it was just too expensive for the 3Mbps. To sum up, I will be really happy if they make my connection faster, but it would really bust steam me if they upped the price because there isn't any other broadband provider available to us (in SW Michigan)! Also, what is with all the caps that people are talking about? I don't have any caps on my connection (other than the speed).

Re: But what about the Pro users?

But are the infrastructure changes directly in support of going to 3Mbps or something else? (searching through ARRIS' website, »www.arrisi.com/index1.asp , each hit for Comcast also comes up with VoIP)

In addition, the replacement of non-DOCSIS modems with DOCSIS modems actually resulted in a reduction of downstream bandwidth for thousands of Comcast customers.
